If you guessed, "for having black skin," you win a prize!
A video of an incident at a Philadelphia Starbucks went viral after it was shared with text stating that it captured two black real estate agents being arrested simply for waiting on a friend at the coffee chain outlet:
Two Black real estate agents were arrested at a Philadelphia Starbucks for waiting for a friend who showed up as they were being handcuffed. The police were called by a barista because the men hadn’t ordered anything, yet.
Many of the white patrons at the Starbucks wondered why they have never been arrested while waiting to meet someone for coffee.

You’re chatting breeze mate.
You may not have done... when it was the occasional person for a few minutes every once in a while... but as a business you would have been well within your rights to do so...
Even my local Mcdonalds has a minimum spend for seating policy... and people going in to just sit and wait are moved on... those refusing to leave have police called onto them...!

It's their business model, nonce. You keep dealing in 20-year old platitudes, and normal is not their stock in trade.
They convey that their cafe is your office away from home, for people who work without a work site or office. That's why Starbuck's has Wi-Fi. People come in and spend all-day on their computers. They encourage it.
They only reason they resorted to 'trespassing' this time, is they are racist cock-suckers. Get it?
Firstly... WTF!!!???
Secondly... why haven't any of the newsfix mods done anything about this yet!!!???

Well, Ben started the thread. I'm sure he looks in and comments when he has something to add. It's been quite lively, airing the issue of racism in public accommodation in America. Under US federal law, public accommodations may not discriminate on the basis of "race, color, religion, or national origin". The Civil Rights Act of 1964: Title II - Public Accommodations.
We have been so busy arguing the evidence that we missed the fact that the victims are seeking legal representation. I believe Mr. Johnson mentioned this as well. I'm sure this story will not end without a substantial verdict...and in Philly, that is going to be toward the left.

Ah okay. Yeah, I see what Tommy means and it was overlooked.
Quill, you can’t go around calling people “nonce”...it means “paedo” or “kiddy-fiddler”.
Not sure if you knew that or not but in any case please don’t use it. To be fair I‘m sure you didn’t mean to acccuse Tommy of that.

Nonce is a commonly accepted term in math. See the following:

In math language, nonce is a place holder, as in 'xxx' in questionnaires. Nonce in urban usage has come to mean a nerd, or one who lives in the computer world, not in the real world. It is a common usage and that is how I have always used it. Ask wolf...it was a favorite term of Myron-myron, on FF. Commonly used by others.
I think tommy may be taking advantage of a double entendre to wind you up, eds. Ben has taken great pains to maintain the legitimacy of all sorts of language here. A favorite term here is twat, meaning the genitals of a female. Another is dick, or dickhead, knob, and prick, meaning part of the genitals of a male. Language is a living, evolving thing. If we are going to start censoring words because of associations with body parts, or possible double entendres, I think we need to generate a list and post it into the rules. Otherwise, its extemporaneous and void for vagueness.

In the UK it means sex offender, particularly a sex offender against children. Tommy is British, so you should respect the fact that you used a very offensive word against him .

Methinks you are trying to put words in another's mouth, using a unique stratagem. Keep in mind, I wrote the passage and my usage should be the meaning that should prevail.
After all, language is to communicate, and it should go from speaker to listener. If the listener doesn't want to hear the words of the speaker, he should close his mind. Tommy has a lot of experience with that.

No, you were referring to Tommy, so you should have been more sensitive to the meaning of the word in the UK. I don't believe your explanation anyway.

Perhaps we should all have multi-lingual editorial checkers. Now we must be conscious of the fact that what is a hood in America, is a bonnet in the UK; what is an RV in America, is a caravan in the UK; what is a traffic-circle in America, is a round-a-bout in the UK. What an absurd idea, for a tiny, informal website.
Once again Raggs, you are on the RW side of things. What you are arguing for is censorship, nothing less. First on the censors' list are usually swear words; let's see if Ben wants to eliminate fuck, shit, balls, tits, twat, pussy, dick, dickhead, cock, labia, cervix...and perhaps hang a sign: shoes and shirt required!
I think not.

You think that objecting to you calling someone a nonce is a right-wing thing? Now I've heard everything. All you had to do was say sorry to Tommy if you meant something else rather than try to defend yourself and blame everyone else for your mistake.

As usual, in fairness the weak-minded deserve to be heard.
'Nonce' has gained popularity because of its alliterative association with the word 'none' or, simply, 'useless'. It means empty-headed, inconsequential, worthless or pointless. When researchers are coding questionnaires, an error or meaningless response is "kicked up stairs" to a category such as 'nnn' or 'xxx' or '999', meaning nothing or empty or irrelevant. It's called a nonce, as defined above.
Ergo, empty-headed nerds, in slang, are referred to as an empty-headed nonce, or simply, nonce. It may seem to some as a bit esoteric, but that is how slang evolves. It sounds like 'none' and means 'useless'. Got it tommy?

Oh, and...as for sorry, you're trying to make a silk purse out of a sow's ear. You're just trying to win a losing argument. Waste of time, really.

Telling you that "nonce" is a very offensive word isn't censorship. You want to be able to call people kiddy fiddlers, and I think you'll find that the mods won't really allow that. Try calling them "right wing" instead of having a go at me for your mistake.

I go banging on about INTELLIGENCE, not cultural sensitivity. A part of intelligence is understanding reason. I have articulated my justification, a lot better that some foggy, arcane, inarticulate usage that Brits have. For god's sake, how do you make a mathematical term into a word for child molesters, anyway? It doesn't even fit cockney rhyming.
Victor, you and I go back a long way--sufficient to say it s personal, not modding. Many times I have supported you, but you have never missed an opportunity to enter a fray against me. Here we are again. It's involved different members and different issues. It's gone on over different websites even. If you want to sit down with Ben and determine who should leave newsfix, I'm willing. We sure don't work well together and this constant opportunistic bickering is not fun for me.

blah blah quill,
I'm not even "modding" here in reality......merely making an observation...quit being so over sensitive and a drama queen.......you would take exception to someone using a grossly offensive term to you , even if it was innocent enough over here. Paranoia comes to mind as well as making yourself a victim of your own mistake.........
be honest bud...you cocked up...its no one elses fault.....
by all means call him a cunnus...as you do, or even a Tw*t...even though I understand THAT is disproportionately offensive your side of the pond.....
but PLEASE...dont use the term nonce to anyone over here.......
which raises a ceratin interesting view as well....
see over here to even be accused (even if totally false and unjustifiable) of any such offence is instant social death.......you may even on that basis alone be visited by the pitchfork and torch brigade.......
I dont know how such things are over there.......

Just for the record, the term "nonce" carries either of both meanings when used as slang over here, depending on who it's aimed at..
20 or 30 years ago, I knew it as an insult meaning a dopey idiot or a empty-headed fool (similar to "nong"..), and it's only been in more recent years that the British use meaning a paedo' has become familiar, largely thanks to British TV shows and international websites like this.

My black friends call me “nigga” as a joke, all the time, yet that word has been deemed offensive in many places.
The word “nonce” has been deemed offensive in the UK. We have all explained this so how about just respecting it and saying “Oh hey Tommy, I didn’t mean it that way, accept my apology”
Please don’t use it, Quill. You may have a different meaning but just accept that here, it is highly offensive, and respect that.

I challenge you to articulate how the mathematical term 'nonce' is in any way associated with child molesters. I've given you a clear etymological explanation as to how it has become innocent slang here in America. I don't believe that there is a connection similar in Britain-ese.
Victor wrote:I'm not even "modding" here in reality......merely making an observation...quit being so over sensitive and a drama queen.......
If you are not modding, what is this passage about:

That's a direct link to the past 5 or 6 years of you trying to pick fights. We've had this discussion on PM, Vic, so don't pretend that this is the first time we've brought it up. It followed us over here from SF, and even Ben will remember remnants of it erupting from early on, on here.
I don't think it's being a drama queen to say knock it off, or let's stand toe-to-toe and have it out. I've never been disrespectful to you--often backing you--but you have this constant thing about me. Aqua always said confrontation is cleansing. Let's air it if it's so important.

As I say, eds, we need to develop a list of taboo words to be posted in the rules. This is a first for me with the word 'nonce'...what other traps are waiting for members of the site?
Sad, but it has come up all too often that someone, somewhere has an issue with a word. We can't use cunt; now nonce...the list keeps growing. I remember when Ben said this was a open site and he was proud of the fact. It seems not anymore.
I think members are entitled to clear direction. Just post a list of taboo words.

I challenge you to articulate how the mathematical term 'nonce' is in any way associated with child molesters. I've given you a clear etymological explanation as to how it has become innocent slang here in America. I don't believe that there is a connection similar in Britain-ese.

If you are not modding, what is this passage about:Victor wrote:uhmmm quill....I HAVE had words with you about this before now......
Let's air it if it's so important.
quill...i tread on your toes maybe once a year or so, generally when you do something dumb that offends (which aint really that bad if you only manage it once a year), and I do disagree with you on many points, since you consider R/Wers in the same light I consider L/Wers...but on matters of law and such the only contention has ever been the "devil in the detail" involved in the differences between US and UK law. I also think that on matters involving common sense human rights we are not so far apart...except in the degree to which they should be used. It may surprise you to learn that the vast majority of your posts afford me considerable amusement, being fairly certain that most of your barbs go entirely unregistered by their intended recipient.....
