In another three years, Oz will be able to celebrate having the second oldest 'air force' in the British Commonwealth...

(Note where Oz was the first country in the "British Empire" to establish a flying school/flying corps..).

In America's case, the USA originally established its Flying Corp as an 'arm' of the USA Army, so it was actually nearly three decades behind Britain in having a separate stand-alone Air Force.  In 1947, in fact --  after WWII..

Sobering thought: The Royal Air Force is 100 years old and I've been an RAF veteran for well over half that time!

Not yet, but got an appointment with the surgeon at the Royal Papworth in a couple of weeks when I should find out more. At least I'm going to be at one of the country's best - if not the best - heart hospitals.
