The psychology of seminal tracks: the songs that changed us
There are certain tracks that go way beyond the remit for a catchy song - they tap into the zeitgeist, get people motivated and inspire change. Here - with expert analysis - we explore why they are so affecting and effective...
Some songs have the power to define our present and shape our future, whether that’s the stark depiction of racism in Billie Holiday’s Strange Fruit or the counter-cultural idealism of John Lennon’s 1971 hit, Imagine, a song that came to carry the grief of millions of fans after Lennon’s murder in 1980.
Elton John’s reworked Candle in the Wind in 1997 provided the same emotional support during the mourning for Diana, Princess of Wales, while 20 years earlier ‒ and rather at the other end of the political spectrum ‒ The Sex Pistols’ God Save The Queen shocked and appalled the British establishment even as it instigated a huge cultural shift towards freedom of expression for the more punk-minded.
Great songs about big issues focus minds, capture the zeitgeist, and change lives. Public Enemy’s Fight The Power did exactly what it said on the label, proving to be an inspirational call to arms for generations of listeners, while the troubled, questioning philosophy of Marvin Gaye’s What’s Going On sings as sweetly and probingly into our ears today as it did back in 1971.
Only really great songs have that power, and here we cast an expert eye over the power and dynamics at work in these pieces of music and other powerful, inspiring tracks, looking at how both the lyrics and music are so affecting and effective, and why they have come to mean so much to so many people.

I guess everyone has their own song that has inspired them?

The power of music and song is very strong....its an interesting thread.
It can lift your mood instantly drive you to suicide, transport you back decades in a couple of seconds.

I don't really like any of the tracks mentioned on the grounds that they're a bit boring. Then again, I think that a tune, rhythm, and a good beat are more important than lyrics.
