Just point them to the Aussie weather...
Over 40°C here tomorrow, (could hit 44 or 45 around here..).
Bad bushfires around Adelaide and Melbourne today.

Re: Warming up?
The northeast has been going through a cold snap...two of them, as a matter of fact, back-to-back. It's combines with a supermoon, or a Beaver Moon, and tides are overflowing. I believe last night made it the longest sustained cold snap on record.
My daughter lives in Boston, and the Charles River has completely frozen over. At the same time, streets are flooding. The shores of Cape Cod Bay are a mess. Icebreakers on the Hudson River.

Here in Arizona we are having very high temperatures on a daily average. It’s been 76! Hottest it’s been in the 9.5 years we’ve been here. Then it drops 30-40 degrees at night!

Yeah, like LA. Up here, we're around 60F. The cold snaps are (1) coming down from the lakes at about the Dakotas; and (2) meeting with another coming up out of the south. The meet and merge right over the east coast, then head to eastern Canada.

Re: Warming up?
It was 40°C inside today, 42 -->>43 outside "in the shade", it would have been around 52--->>55 out in the open (the pitch temp. was 55°C at the test cricket down at the SCG..).
Compare that with minus 25 celsius over in New York..
Penrith in western Sydney reached 47.3 C in the afternoon -- surpassing the previous record for the Sydney Basin/Greater Sydney Region of 47.1, (set last year..).
We're expecting a couple more stinking days, before hopefully a cool change Tuesday night/Wednesday.

Those are winter temperatures. Arizona is quite pleasant in the winter.
Summer is brutal there. Tucson, about 1100-ft higher that Phoenix, is really nice. Phoenix is sea level, and on average, about 10-12F more than Tucson.
The Sonoran Desert is uncomfortable in the summer. In fact, the reason I left was because of that one day when it was 131F (55C) in the Valley of the Sun.
