'Dad's Army' volunteers to help Border Force patrol Britain's coastline against people smugglers and crime gangs Empty 'Dad's Army' volunteers to help Border Force patrol Britain's coastline against people smugglers and crime gangs

Post by Guest Sun Dec 31, 2017 1:28 pm

A 'Dad's Army' of volunteers could patrol vulnerable areas of Britain's coastline including sea ports used in the past by people smugglers and organised crime gangs.

The unpaid border guards, called the "Special Volunteer Force", will report directly to the Border Force, according to the Mail on Sunday.

The Home Office confirmed to the Sunday Telegraph that it is consulting with police about how best to deploy the volunteers.

It is understood those taking part will have no powers to interrogate or arrest suspects.

Suspect

Stupid fucking article there on the Telegraph's part, attempting to lampoon a potential volunteer service by comparing it to the "Dad's Army" comedy series...

Typical Murdoch gutter rag, with its typical Murdoch gutter editor --  what's the bet that the Telegraph reporters involved have never volunteered for anything in their miserable and empty lives ?

Anybody who wants to know how genuine volunteer coastal patrols actually work could do worse than check out the Aussie and Kiwi models --  except that, over here their main/prime function is search and rescue.

Murdoch might well own the Australian Daily Telegraph, but he doesn't own the UK Daily Telegraph...it is part of the Telegraph Media Group business run by the reclusive Channel Island-based brothers Sir David and Sir Frederick Barclay.

I am sure they would welcome your grovelling apology.

Reasonable idea.
Hopefully only sensible, grounded applicants would be recruited.
Let's face it, some of the people who volunteer with gusto for such jobs tend to be of 'a type.' 'Dad's Army' volunteers to help Border Force patrol Britain's coastline against people smugglers and crime gangs 3489511464

I don’t like the idea at all. We have far too many crazy militia groups here in the US, and in particular here in Arizona. They are for the most part trigger happy hate anyone who isn’t Christian and white. A few years ago, one group did a home invasion and ended up killing a man and his 9 year old daughter.

Aside from this, they get in the way of true agents, do nothing to help and cause more issues than solutions.

If you want more secure Maritime borders, hire and properly train actual employees and not some rogue wanna have a go types. It never ends well.

I'm more worried about the actual government employees. They tend to shoot us and get away with it. Wink

Didn't stop them swapping editors...

When Cameron was campaigning two elections ago, your English Telegraph hired the Aussie editor of the Sydney Daily Telegraph to help with their Tory propaganda efforts, while the English editor came out and took over the Telegraph here ; (Don't know if they subsequently made that swap pemanent or not -- who could blame that Pommie editor if he didn't want to go home..).

Doesn't matter who was paying their salaries, but both Telegraphs were part of the conservative propaganda machine -- both companies "pissing in the same pot" as it were..

Cool

Don't confuse militia groups with genuine 'volunteer' groups...

These volunteer groups in places like Britain, Australia, NZ (and to a lesser extent Canada), operate more like the volunteer (i.e. unpaid..) mountain rescue, ski patrol and surf rescue groups in some parts of the USA..

They cover more of the same ground as your 'National Guard' units, with two major cifferences --  we didn't get paid, and we don't carry guns..

The biggest single non-permanent/non-'regulars' "coastwatch" group on the planet happens to be an Aussie Army Reserve unit (i.e. paid, not volunteers..)  up in the Northern Territory.  Places like Canada, Alaska, Russia, Finland more-than-likely have similar 'Reseve units patrolling in their remote areas, but spread across more units; (and where also, in nearly all these cases, over 90% of the members will be indigenous/native locals..).

Most of those American "Militia" groups, on the other hand, are largely composed of ignorant, gun-happy, psychopathic, inbred redneck and anti-gov't types, without the balls or collective intelligence to join a regular Reserve or National Guard unit, and often led by delusional sociopaths..

Like I said in my earlier post,  the English police could look to the Aussie and Kiwi volunteer models --  and also look to involving and training them with search and rescue services.

You can waffle and flap about all you like, but the Australian DT and the UK DT, which has been around since the 1850s, are owned by different companies that are headed by different proprietors.

Murdoch and Newscorp have nothing to do with the London-based Telegraph, which was bought from, I think, Hollinger some years ago by the Channel Islands-based Barclay brothers. I can't recall it ever having been part of the Murdoch empire. (Strange how he became such a hate figure for the Loony Left...but only after very publicly switching his previously grovelling allegiance to, er, the Labour Party to the Tories via his mass circulation red top tabloid, The Sun.)

Whether a former editor of the Sydney DT spent some time with the UK DT or not, I haven't a clue. In any case it's immaterial, as a number of national newspaper editors, including the Daily Mirror's Piers Morgan, have at one time or another worked in the overseas media.

So far as I can recall present DT editor Chris Evans took over the editor's chair at the Daily Telegraph some years ago as an internal promotion and replacement for ex-Daily Mail man Tony Gallagher.

Also irrelevant is the fact that the UK Daily Telegraph supports the Conservative and Unionist Party - and has done so for most of its existence (though the present proprietors publicly announced on acquiring the title that they would continue to support a Tory government "so long as we think they are right.")

But so what? The Daily Mirror supports the Labour and Co-operative parties...and most other UK national newspapers have declared party political allegiances of varying degrees of commitment.

I have no issue with the National Guard or Reserves or Territorials at all.  They would certainly be a good fit for this type of situation. It depends on the job remit and how far they would have authority if you’re going to have it as a volunteer filled position.  Because of seeing the types of militias we have here and also dealing with volunteers for a long time now and how they cannot always be relied on is what makes me not like the idea.

I have to say, Wolf, that I side with Cass here.  She's not talking about any militia or semi-organized groups here.  She's talking about Arizona vigilantes along the lines of Sheriff Joe Arpaio.

They have absolutely no authority, and exists along the lines of the KKK.

It’s just an idea here that wouldn’t work, mainly because of the gun issue and what you mentioned, and I don’t think it’s suitable for a volunteer staffed force in Britain either. Volunteer fire departments and search and rescue teams are completely different from what this is describing.

If they want more protection, then people are going to have to ante up on their taxes to pay for it.
