Fire in the Bronx kills at least 12

At least a dozen people, including a baby, have been killed in a fire at an apartment block in the Bronx, New York City. The blaze broke out in the five-storey building a block away from the Bronx Zoo shortly before 7pm local time.

Around 170 firefighters were rushed to the scene on what was one of the coldest nights of the year with the temperature plunging to -9C (15F). Fire chiefs said the blaze started on the ground floor and swiftly spread upwards. The victims are understood to range from one year old to over 50.

Another 12 people were reported to have been rescued and four others were seriously injured.

New York City officials now believe the devastating Thursday night Bronx fire that killed 12 people—including four children—was caused by a 3 1/2-year-old boy playing with a stove in a ground-floor apartment. Mayor Bill de Blasio told reporters that four people remained in critical condition late Friday morning. Among the dead were girls ages 1, 2, and 7, and a boy whose age has not been released. The flames moved so quickly, in part because of a gas line that fueled the fire, that most residents of the apartment complex never made it out of their homes on the frigid night. Those who escaped the five-story building stood barefoot in the cold without coats, watching their neighbors' burned bodies carried away on stretchers. Fire Commissioner Daniel Nigro called the blaze “historic in its magnitude.” “It is an unspeakable tragedy, and families have been torn apart,” de Blasio said.

What's worse is, it's freezing and snowing in NYC this morning. Those people had to run out in their pajamas.

The gd news is the NYFD got there in 3 minutes, and Red Cross handed out coats.

Sadly, not quick enough, which as good as 3 minutes is, to me. It may have meant more lives saved, if the alarm was sounded sooner. Sadly, will we ever know?

The people who died did so of asphyxiation. The NYC police and fire departments have been tested so often, that they are unquestionably the greatest authorities on first response. Frankly, I would trust them over the United States Military..which is more interested in aircraft carriers and F-18's.

The NYC first responders are the real heroes.

In these cases, what needs to be looked at is the fire safety of the building; were smoke alarms fitted; was anything slowing down people evacuating (lack of fire escapes, bocked doorways..).

3 minutes is quite a good time -- in many places, it could take 10 or 15 minutes..

Fire can go up so quickly you don't have time to escape. I've witnessed a building fire and it literally went up in about 4 minutes.

Russ, I was praising the NYC fire fighters. Their response in this case was nothing short of miraculous.

Now, if you want to talk about the US military: yes, I think they have been caught with their pants down, what with their ethos of bigger is better, and more is finer! There's nothing subtle about America's military, from big tanks, big boats and mo money.

But the NYFD and NYPD have quietly gone about becoming the greatest urban warriors in the world. They are developing new tactics and new equipment for the coming style of combat. The US military will be caught looking around, and saying wha hoppened?
