Starving, dehydrated and in many cases, dying, hundreds of African slaves are crammed on to the deck of a British ship. Taken in the early days of photography, this picture gives a disturbingly contemporary feel to one of history's bleakest chapters.
No wonder the National Archives chose it to illustrate the 'profoundly oppressive' nature of the British Empire in an exhibition.
Thousands of visitors, many of them schoolchildren, would pause to reflect on the photograph captioned: 'East African slaves taken aboard HMS Daphne from a dhow, 1 November 1868.'
The subtext was clear: look at the cruelty of these brutal British imperialists. Except the curators of the exhibition had made one very serious mistake indeed. For the poor souls in this picture were no longer slaves.
They had just been rescued by HMS Daphne from an Arab slave ship, liberated from a crew of monsters, one of whom had beaten a baby to death a few hours earlier.

Here's a bit of genuine 19th century history to counter that revisionist nonsense, Doddery ol' Dodge :
http://www.abc.net.au/news/2017-09-17/blackbirding-australias-history-of-kidnapping-pacific-islanders/8860754
https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Blackbirding#In_Australia
The money to back these enterprises in Australia, New Guinea, New Zealand, Fiji, etc. right across to Chile, came from English and Scottish investment companies..
With much of their profits being funnelled back to their financial backers -- British aristocracy, "establishment", merchant classes, and even the Royals themselves.
Nothing like the British Empire keeping their more unsavoury antics "out of sight, out of mind", was there..

From wetwipes own link
Priceless
Sorry, what revisonist history, wetwipe?
Dont you look a right wally for posting that?
As it was basically Aussies responsible for this crime
It seems the only revisioinist history, is the horsesgit you were clearly taught in school.
In 1862 J. C. Byrne, an Irish speculator, persuaded countrymen to financially back a scheme to bring "colonists" from the New Hebrides to Peru as indentured agricultural workers. The first ship, Adelante, was fitted and on 15 June 1862 set out across the Pacific. Calling in at Tongareva (Penrhyn) in the northern Cook Islands, Byrne found the one island in the Pacific where the population was willing to leave because of a severe coconut famine. He took 253 recruits; by September, they were working in Peru as plantation workers and domestic household servants.
Almost immediately speculators and ship owners fitted out ageing ships that went to Polynesia to bring "willing colonists". From September 1862 to April 1863, no less than 30 ships set out. Because profit was the main motive, many ship captains resorted to dishonest tactics and kidnapping to fill their ships.
Also
In Australia
From the 1860s, the demand for labour in Queensland, Australia, resulted in blackbirding in the region. Queensland was a self-governing British colony in northeastern Australia until 1901, when it became a state of the Commonwealth of Australia. Over a period of 40 years, from the mid-19th century to the early 20th century, traders "recruited" Kanaka labourers for the sugar cane fields of Queensland, from the New Hebrides (now Vanuatu), Papua New Guinea, the Solomon Islands and the Loyalty Islands of New Caledonia as well as Niue. The Queensland government tried to regulate the trade: it required every ship engaged in recruiting labourers from the Pacific islands to carry a person approved by the government to ensure that labourers were willingly recruited and not kidnapped. But, such government observers were often corrupted by bonuses paid for labourers 'recruited,' or blinded by alcohol, and did little or nothing to prevent sea-captains from tricking islanders on-board or otherwise engaging in kidnapping with violence.[11] Joe Melvin, an investigative journalist who, undercover, in 1892 joined the crew of Queensland blackbirding ship Helena, found no instances of intimidation or misrepresentation and concluded that the Islanders recruited did so "willingly and cannily"

Didge and his fellow Tory revisionist/denialist/apologist chums are getting a bit desperate, in the lead-up to Christmas...
Nothing like a bit of feel good faux history to cheer up the peasentry, whenever their beloved Tories are getting a bit on the nose, and their approval polls are tumbling..

Well done you got my name right.
Second, I am yet to see you refute the article in regards to this picture being wrongly defined as a slave ship in the national archives, when it in fact freed slaves.
I have always been a critic of the British Empire for the wrongs that was done. So again you misdirect with poor lies. This though is about how the national archives were telling porky pies

Slavery abolished in British Empire in 1833 - photograph dated 1868 - Revisionist? Bit of a stretch to continue trying to beat the British Empire with a pc stick.
To listen to some people Britain was the only empire that ever existed and maybe they should check out the history of slavery before the British Empire became involved and the countries that officially kept the practice up until fairly recently, although it actually still goes on in many places.

Green for that mate, sick of ignorant prats bringing up things that happened hundreds of years ago, taken overall the British Empire did far more good than bad. These people who criticise the British should take a look back at their own countries history !

Correct. Actually, the political processes not only to end the slave trade so far as UK law was concerned but also to use the might of the Royal Navy to attempt to enforce British policy on an international scale began at the end of the 18th century, culminating in the 1833 Act of Parliament.
Between the early 1800s and the time that photograph was taken, more than 150,000 African slaves had been rescued at sea and several hundred slave ships had been captured.
Countless British sailors died from wounds and disease manning the ships patrolling the West Africa station in particular, operating out of Banjul (formerly Bathurst) in what is now The Gambia because of its strategic position on the West African coast at the mouth of the Gambia River. (If you're planning a holiday there for God's sake take plenty of mozzie cream and quinnine tablets...the buggers are the most vicious I have ever come across!)
The biggest slavers and slave traders, on the other hand, were Muslim Arabs...something that true historical revisionists such as the overtly racist and anti-British Wolfie desperately try to conceal.
I spent several days in Banjul (not the nicest city in the world) and the county's second city Serekunda (probably one of the worst!) back in the 80s doing some research for a magazine article prompted by worldwide interest in Alex Haley's book and TV series "Roots."

Believe the lies, if you like...
The British guvm'nt can spout all the lying bullshit they like..
However :
* British companies were still shanghai'ing slaves in tne South Pacific from the 1860s through to end of the 19th century;
* Slaves from British-funded blackbirding were finally freed after a new anti-slavery law passed after the Federation of Australia in 1901 (see my first reference, above..);
* Your deliberate bullshit lies are only re-inforcing some of the crap contained in Dodge's original post.

Bollocks. The biggest bullshit liar and peddler of crap in this forum is yourself.
The photograph was of rescued slaves, not slaves being transported.
Britain led the world in the legal abolition of slavery and ran the naval operations along the African coast to enforce it. Have you never head of William Wilberforce, the Abolition of Slavery Act of 1833 and the naval operations of the West Africa Squadron?
Muslim Arabs were the worst slavers since the Romans and Africa was their main stamping ground.
I would place the work of historian, author and journalist Robert Hardman - and even my own modest knowledge of the subject based on actually having done some research on it - above the racist anti-British ranting of some Aussie loud mouth who is stupid enough to believe in the accuracy of everything he reads in Wiki.

I don't know you're ancestry but I'd guess the British Isles
vehemence and eagerness to apportion blame for almost all the world's ills on the British Empire in general and Britain in particular I'd say a good bet would be Ireland.
Empires in general aren't a great idea for those who are annexed by them they do have some good qualities though. I watched a programme about the Jewel in The Crown of the British Empire - India, the commentator at one point was at pains to tell us how the extensive rail system was not originally built for the people but to get trade goods to the ports - hell of a suprise to me - not.
Did the Romans build their famous straight roads across their empire for the benefit of the peoples of course not.
The extensive rail system around here (what's left of it) would not have been built if it wasn't to get coal from the caol fields to the ports for export.
The 'coolie trade' wasn't exactly slavery by the definition of what was outlawed, came very near though in many cases, it was international companies that carried this out and much of it via Australia so whether your family were in Australia or the British Isles at this time and you continue to blame decendants of people of that time then you are just as complicit as you seem to think I and other Brits are. It doesn't make it right but many of the Chinese workers decided to stay in S. America, adopted Spanish names, became Catholic, married local women or brought in wives from China and founded a China Town, forgotten the name of it though.
I can't help what happened with the British Empire good or bad but I can acknowledge both and do that in the context of the time it happened and the almost universal codesmindset of the time.

Strangely enough I just caught the end of Amistad re: Lomboko Slave Fortress run by a Spaniard, where the slaves were freed by Royal Marines and the fortress destroyed by them in 1849.
