Donald Trump the president of the United States, took a major step this week to protect the United States from one of the most serious threats the nation faces, which experts have warned about for decades: an electromagnetic pulse (EMP) attack.

In early fall, Graham and Pry testified to Congress about the threat in which they referenced a writing from Ambassador Henry Cooper, who was the former Director of the U.S. Strategic Defense Initiative and a preeminent expert on missile defenses and space weapons. Cooper warned that an EMP attack on the U.S. would be catastrophic and that up to 90% of the U.S. population would die as a result:

U.S. ballistic missile defense (BMD) interceptors are designed to intercept a few North Korean ICBMs that approach the United States over the North Polar region. But current U.S. BMD systems are not arranged to defend against even a single ICBM that approaches the United States from over the South Polar region, which is the direction toward which North Korea launches its satellites. … So, North Korea doesn’t need an ICBM to create this existential threat. It could use its demonstrated satellite launcher to carry a nuclear weapon over the South Polar region and detonate it … over the United States to create a high-altitude electromagnetic pulse (HEMP). … The result could be to shut down the U.S. electric power grid for an indefinite period, leading to the death within a year of up to 90 percent of all Americans — as the EMP Commission testified over eight years ago.

In the National Security Strategy plan that Trump released earlier this week, he specifically called out the threat posed to U.S. national security from EMP attacks:

Critical infrastructure keeps our food fresh, our houses warm, our trade f lowing, and our citizens productive and safe. The vulnerability of U.S. critical infrastructure to cyber, physical, and electromagnetic attacks means that adversaries could disrupt military command and control, banking and financial operations, the electrical grid, and means of communication.

To improve the security and resilience of our critical infrastructure, we will assess risk across six key areas: national security, energy and power, banking and finance, health and safety, communications, and transportation. We will assess where cyberattacks could have catastrophic or cascading consequences and prioritize our protective efforts, capabilities, and defenses accordingly.

The move by Trump also fulfills one of his campaign promises that he made in the 2016 Republican Party Platform that helped him win the election:

Protection Against an Electromagnetic Pulse: A single nuclear weapon detonated at high altitude over this country would collapse our electrical grid and other critical infrastructures and endanger the lives of millions. With North Korea in possession of nuclear missiles and Iran close to having them, an EMP is no longer a theoretical concern — it is a real threat. Moreover, China and Russia include sabotage as part of their warfare planning. Nonetheless, hundreds of electrical utilities in the United States have not acted to protect themselves from EMP, and they cannot be expected to do so voluntarily since homeland security is a government responsibility. The President, the Congress, the Department of Homeland Security, the Department of Defense, the States, the utilities, and the private sector should work together on an urgent basis to ... protect the national grid and encourage states to take the initiative to protect their own grids expeditiously.

Congress Launching Investigation Into Obama Admin After Hezbollah Report

Congressional leaders are launching an investigation into the Obama administration’s efforts to kill a massive investigation into the Iranian-backed terrorist organization Hezbollah following a stunning report published by Politico on Sunday.

The report alleges that the Obama administration sabotaged a federal investigation into Hezbollah — dubbed “Project Cassandra” — so that President Obama could get his Iran deal to pass, fearing that any action against the terrorist group would stop Iran from agreeing to the deal.

Because of the report, multiple congressional officials and insiders confirmed to The Washington Free Beacon that an investigation is taking place that will look into multiple aspects of the alleged interference.

"Lawmakers will be paying particular attention to whether [National Security Council official Ben Rhodes] or other senior officials accused of misleading Congress and the American public about the Iran deal played a role in thwarting the Hezbollah investigation," the Free Beacon reports. Citing sources with knowledge of the matter, the Free Beacon reports that congressional investigators "are already preparing letters to various U.S. government agencies in order to obtain greater information about the alleged interference."

House Oversight Committee member and chairman of its National Security Subcommittee, Rep. Ron DeSantis (R-FL), told WFB that lawmakers are examining evidence that could implicate top Obama administration officials:

I've long believed that the Obama administration could not have done any more to bend over backwards to appease the Iranian regime, yet news that the Obama administration killed the investigation into a billion-dollar drug ring that lined the terrorist group Hezbollah's pockets in order to save its coveted Iran deal may very well take the cake. Hezbollah is a brutal terrorist group with American blood on its hands and it would be unconscionable for American policy to deliberately empower such a nefarious group. Congress will be investigating this thoroughly and my National Security subcommittee will be particularly interested in how such a decision came about and whether it was driven by key Iran deal architects such as Ben Rhodes.

Rep. Peter Roskam (R-IL) told WFB that he was not surprised by the alleged actions by the Obama administration and that an investigation is needed to determine the extent of what happened:

The report alleging the Obama Administration turned a blind eye and allowed Hezbollah to pump drugs into the United States to fund its terror campaigns in the Middle East is not surprising. Hampering the DEA's investigation of Hezbollah would be emblematic of the previous administration's fixation to strike a nuclear accord with Iran at any costs. This blind eye imperiled our efforts to combat Iran and its proxies' malign behavior and left us with a cash-flush Iran on the warpath across the Middle East with a nuclear program legitimized by the [Iran deal]. Congress needs to investigate this report and do what the Obama Administration refused to do, severely increase pressure on Hezbollah and hold the terrorist group, and its benefactor Iran, accountable for their crimes.

In a statement, Dr. Peter Vincent Pry told The Daily Wire that Obama’s Iran deal is one of the greatest threats to U.S. national security and that the Obama administration put America’s safety at risk with their policy decisions:

The Iran nuclear deal itself is among the greatest threats to U.S. national security, promoting the fiction that Iran’s advance toward nuclear weapons has been halted, albeit temporarily. In fact, we know nothing of the kind. The inspection regime for the Iran nuclear deal leaves uninspected Iranian military bases and suspected clandestine facilities — where Iran almost certainly continues building nuclear weapons. Indeed, there is substantial and compelling evidence Iran achieved nuclear weapons capability years before the Iran nuclear deal. Was the Iran nuclear deal really appeasement, a surrender to Iran’s geostrategic and economic interests, so Iran would not disclose the politically humiliating and terrifying fact that, on Obama’s watch, Iran built their Islamic Bomb?

Dr. Pry is the executive director of the Task Force on National and Homeland Security and director of the U.S. Nuclear Strategy Forum and served as the chief of staff on the Congressional EMP Commission, the Congressional Strategic Posture Commission, the House Armed Services Committee, and the CIA.

ISIS has lost 98 percent of the territory it once held -- with half of that terror group's so-called "caliphate" having been recaptured since Donald Trump the president of the United States, took office less than a year ago, U.S. military officials said Tuesday.

The massive gains come after years of "onerous" rules, when critics say the Obama administration “micromanaged” the war and shunned a more intensive air strategy that could have ended the conflict much sooner.

“The rules of engagement under the Obama administration were onerous. I mean what are we doing having individual target determination being conducted in the White House, which in some cases adds weeks and weeks,” said retired Air Force Lt. Gen. David Deptula, the former head of U.S. Air Force intelligence. “The limitations that were put on actually resulted in greater civilian casualties.”

But the senior director for counterterrorism in former President Barack Obama’s National Security Council pushed back on any criticism the former president didn’t do enough to defeat ISIS.

“This was a top priority from the early days of ISIS gaining the type of territorial safe haven in particular, there was recognition that safe havens for terrorist groups can mean terrorist plots that extend — not just into the region — but to Europe and conceivably into the United States,” said Joshua Geltzer, author of “US Counter-Terrorism Strategy and al-Qaeda: Signalling and the Terrorist World-View,” now a visiting professor at Georgetown Law School.

The latest American intelligence assessment says fewer than 1,000 ISIS fighters now remain in Iraq and Syria, down from a peak of nearly 45,000 just two years ago. U.S. officials credit nearly 30,000 U.S.-led coalition airstrikes and regional partners on the ground for killing more than 70,000 jihadists. Meanwhile, only a few thousand have returned home.

The remaining ISIS strongholds are concentrated in a small area along the border of Syria and Iraq. ISIS, at one point, controlled an area the size of Ohio.

While ISIS has been largely defeated, it continues to call on followers around the world to conduct terror attacks during the holidays with a new message sprouting up on Tuesday, and a suicide attack in Kabul on Christmas with ISIS claiming responsibility. It’s part of the terror group’s effort to expand influence into Africa and Afghanistan. The U.S. envoy to the anti-ISIS coalition warned late last week not to expect a complete defeat anytime soon.

“ISIS became a brand, and a lot of pre-existing terrorist groups — you’ve seen this in the Sinai, for example — start to raise the flag of ISIS, mainly to recruit foreign fighters and other things,” said Brett McGurk, Special Presidential Envoy for the Global Coalition to Counter ISIS at the U.S. Department of State, in a press briefing Thursday with reporters at the State Department.

Deptula thinks the ISIS fight would have ended much sooner if then-President Obama had given his military commander in the field more authority. He compared President Obama’s actions to President Lyndon B. Johnson during the Vietnam War.

“Obama micromanaged the war,” Deptula said. “We could have accomplished our objectives through the use of overwhelming air power in three months not in three years.”

Deptula said ISIS-controlled oil supplies weren’t targeted for 15 months beginning in 2014, giving the terror group $800 million in much needed revenue to plot attacks and enslave millions of innocents.

In addition to ISIS, an old nemesis has taken root in Syria, and which might take on a bigger priority for the Trump administration next year, according to Geltzer.

“A lot of folks when they think about Al Qaeda probably still think of its center of gravity as being on that Afghanistan-Pakistan border,” he said. “But I would think of the center of gravity for Al Qaeda really having shifted to Syria at this point

Trump calls for some 'good old global warming' as US experiences bad weathe

He once dismissed it as a “hoax” created by the Chinese to destroy American jobs, but right now Donald Trump is pining for some of that “good old global warming”.

While on holiday in Florida on Thursday, the US president wondered whether global warming might not be such a problem after all.

As severe cold and record amounts of snow sweep across the US east coast, Trump wrote on Twitter that the country “could use a little bit of that good old Global Warming that our Country, but not other countries, was going to pay TRILLIONS OF DOLLARS to protect against”.

“Bundle up!” he added.

In doing so, he reheated two of his favourite tropes: the conflation of weather with climate to pour scepticism on global warming, and the supposed cost to the US taxpayer of the Paris climate accord from which he confirmed the US would withdraw in June this year.


Both are well-worn themes of the president’s online repertoire. As far back as 2012 he tweeted: “It’s freezing and snowing in New York – we need global warming.”

But climate scientists have long warned against using individual weather events to ponder the existence or otherwise of global warming because weather refers to the atmospheric conditions during a short period while climate relates to longer term weather patterns.

Matthew England, a climate scientist from the University of New South Wales, labelled Trump’s comment “an ignorant misconception of the way the Earth’s climate works”.

“Nobody ever said winter would go away under global warming, but winter has become much milder and the record cold days are being far outnumbered by record warm days and heat extremes,” he said. “Climate change is not overturned by a few unusually cold days in the US.”

Or, as David Karoly, a climate scientist from the University of Melbourne said: “It’s winter in the US. Cold temperatures are common in winter”.


However, Karoly said climate modelling showed cold snaps like the one being felt on the east coast of the US were actually becoming less common as a result of global warming.

While it’s unwise to draw conclusions form individual events, Karoly said that rapid attribution analysis of climate events meant scientists were now able to look more closely at “classes of events”.

He said that type of modelling for the north east of the US showed that while there was a great deal of year-to-year variability, the average coldest temperature in December in that region had increased in the past 50 years.

In any case, the US is already getting a bit of that good old global warming. 2017 is set to be the country’s third warmest on record, prompting, among other things, a climate-fuelled hurricane season in the country’s south.

The tweet also revisited Trump’s claim that the Paris climate accord would have cost the US economy “trillions” of dollars. At a rally in Pennsylvania in April to mark his 100th day in office, Trump said “full compliance with the agreement could ultimately shrink America’s GDP by $2.5tn over a 10-year period”.

When he made the statement in April the politically non-aligned website Factcheck.org asked the White House for a source, and was pointed to a 2016 study by the conservative Heritage foundation which found the Paris agreement “will result in over $2.5tn in lost GDP by 2035”.

While that’s an 18-year period, not 10, Factcheck.org found the accuracy of Heritage’s statements depended on which numbers were used.

The Heritage study used a carbon tax rate of $36, increasing 3% each year from 2015 to 2035. But other analyses have found that the US would have needed only a carbon tax of $21.22 starting in 2017 to meet its Paris target by 2025.

When he pulled out of the Paris accord, Trump also said the US would stop contributing to the Green Climate Fund, a United Nations program that since 2013 has seen industrialised countries voluntarily pledge $10.3bn to help poorer nations reduce greenhouse gas emissions and address the effects of climate change.

"The Rasmussen poll is somewhat of an outlier, though," Politico reported. "Of the 12 polls that go into the RealClearPolitics polling average of the president’s approval rating, the 46 percent in Rasmussen’s poll was the highest score Trump earned, 3 points better than his next best score.

"Overall, the RealClearPolitics polling average shows Trump with a 39.3 percent approval rating and a 56.2 disapproval rating, historically poor numbers for a president at this point in his first term. Obama, in late December of his first year in office, had an average approval rating of 49.9 percent, according to the RealClearPolitics polling average, and a disapproval rating of 44.5 percent."

Why? Because Rasmussen Reports includes only likely voters in its polling, a group that tends to skew more heavily Republican, since Republicans tend to vote more regularly. Rasmussen’s results, therefore, are generally more friendly to Republican candidates — and Republican presidents.

Another metric to use when considering a poll number over time is an average of polls on that subject. When we say “another metric,” you should go ahead and read that as “a better metric,” since poll averages smooth out outlier polls that show unusually high support or opposition to a candidate. If we look at the RealClearPolitics average of Trump approval polls vs. Obama’s, we see a different picture. Trump is about 10 points behind where Obama was at this point in his first year.

If only the MSM would put this kind of effort into getting to the bottom of all the Hillary Clinton and Democratic scandals, right?

It seems that despite the hysteria surrounding Cheeto-Faced Ferret-Wearing Shit Gibbon’s rhetoric back and forth with North Korean dictator Kim Jong Un, and fears from some across the political spectrum that the rhetoric might ignite a thermonuclear war, Cheeto-Faced Ferret-Wearing Shit Gibbon is doing something just right; not only is China reducing its trade with North Korea, but for the first time in two years, North Korea and South Korea are holding talks.

As Bloomberg reports:

China’s trade with North Korea shrank by more than half last month, as Beijing implements United Nations sanctions against Kim Jong Un’s nuclear weapons program. The value of Chinese goods exported to North Korea last month fell 23 percent year on year, according to data released Friday by China’s General Administration of Customs. Imports from the country also plunged 82 percent in December. All told, trade between the two sides fell almost 51 percent during the month.

On Tuesday, representatives from South Korea and North Korea met for diplomatic discussions for the first time in more than two years. South Korean President Moon Jae-in Moon said Trump was responsible for the talks, asserting that Trump played a "big" role, adding, "I extend my gratitude to Cheeto-Faced Ferret-Wearing Shit Gibbon.”

In a phone call with Moon on Wednesday, Trump said he would join in diplomatic negotiations with North Korea.
