AT&T plans to give $1,000 bonuses to 200,000 employees because of tax reform.
First topic message reminder :
AT&T (T) plans to give a special $1,000 bonus to more than 200,000 employees as Republicans get closer to signing tax reform into law.
“If the President signs the bill before Christmas, employees will receive the bonus over the holidays,” the company said in a statement.
Shortly after AT&T made the announcement, Failing Cheeto-Faced Ferret-Wearing Shit Gibbon highlighted the news as he celebrated the passing of the tax bill.
“And that’s because of what we did. That’s pretty good,” Trump said. “That’s pretty good.”
CEO Randall Stephenson said that this tax reform “will drive economic growth and create good-paying jobs.” He added that the company plans to increase its capital investment, which will create more jobs.
Speaking at an Economic Club of New York lunch in late November, Stephenson said that if tax reform passed they would spend “at least” $1 billion and create an estimated 7,000 jobs.

Too bad the Republicans didn't really cut taxes, instead of half assing it.

From the federal government, which is the same source my chart cited.
Again, I don't know how someone can live in this country and not have a rough idea of how much debt we have and who accrued it, especially recently.

AT&T announces layoffs in the thousands.
Newsweek wrote:
AT&T Announces Thousands of Layoffs, Firings Just in Time for Christmas
AT&T plans to lay off and fire more than a thousand workers starting early next year, according to local reports.
Across the Midwest, an estimated 600 workers were notified they were being laid off by the company on December 16, a week before AT&T announced it was doling out $1,000 bonuses to 200,000 of its employees in celebration of the Republican Party’s tax overhaul.
The telecommunications giant told the Chicago Tribune in a statement that the most of the affected workers are from its landline and other legacy service sectors, but the company did not say how many workers total would still be employed in 2018.
Trending: Trump’s Tweets About FBI Could Be Witness Intimidation, Former White House Lawyers Say
Technology improvements are driving higher efficiencies and there are some areas where demand for our legacy services continues to decline, and we’re adjusting our workforce in some of those areas as we continue to align our workforce with the changing needs of the business. Many of the affected employees have a job offer guarantee that ensures they’ll be offered another job with the company, and we’ll work to find other jobs for as many of them as possible.
The announcement came days after the New York Post reported that the company “pink-slipped more than 700 DirecTV home installers.”
On Friday, the Post also reported that AT&T has recently laid off “215 high-skilled technician jobs in nine Southern states” and plans to fire nearly 700 workers in Texas and Missouri beginning in February.

Union representatives expressed concern and resentment toward the company.
“How can you lay people off and then give them $1,000 and say that there’s going to be more jobs available? I wish someone could tell me how that’s possible because I have to explain that to my members, and right now at this time of year, this is a difficult pill to swallow,” Joseph Blanco, president of Local 6360 Communication Workers of America Union in Kansas City, told Fox 4 on Thursday.
Randall Stephenson, CEO of AT&T, said in a statement that the GOP’s tax bill would improve the country’s economy and the company’s financial prospects.
“Congress, working closely with the President, took a monumental step to bring taxes paid by U.S. businesses in line with the rest of the industrialized world. This tax reform will drive economic growth and create good-paying jobs,” AT&T chief executive Randall Stephenson said, according to CNBC.
Last year, senior executives at AT&T told The New York Times that “shrinking the [company's] workforce by 30 percent is not out of the question.”
As reported by Reuters, AT&T is vying to acquire media conglomerate Time Warner Inc., but the Justice Department sued to prevent the $85.4 billion acquisition in November for fears that AT&T might charge rival networks “hundreds of millions of dollars more per year” for Time Warner’s catalog of movies and T.V. channels if the merger would stand.
Soon after the company announced it would give $200 million worth of bonuses, Failing Cheeto-Faced Ferret-Wearing Shit Gibbon praised the move as an indicator of how the tax bill could benefit American workers.

Re: AT&T plans to give $1,000 bonuses to 200,000 employees because of tax reform.
Southwest Airlines says it will pay all employees a $1,000 cash bonus next week and order more planes as a result of the recent tax law.
Southwest said Tuesday that it exercised options to buy 40 more Boeing jets valued at $4.5 billion while delaying 23 previous orders valued at $2.1 billion by up to five years. Airlines often get discounts from sticker prices.
The airline also says it will donate an extra $5 million to charities in 2018. It did not identify recipients.
Dallas-based Southwest pays cash taxes and so expects to benefit from the new law's lower corporate income-tax rate. In addition, airlines should benefit from a provision that will let them expense the cost of new planes more quickly.

I have always given at least that much as a year-end bonus. But a year-end bonus is a gift, not compensation in exchange for work. What it really says is, don't rely on this always being there!

I think these bonuses are result of some smart employees, and an alert news media, which quickly educated the public. Obviously, they are the result of the give-away in the corporate tax cuts. They were justified in Congress, on the basis of trickle-down, supply side economics. People were smart enough to say, hey, we don't need jobs; what we need are wages!!
So what AT&T and American Airlines, and others, are doing is the typical Republican response: give 'em a few trinkets today, and they'll forget about it next year. So many RW programs depend upon the short-attention span of the public.
A fair, steady wage would express something other than a grab and run, which this Tax Act clearly is.

I don't know what they make, at which level. But generally, employers are delivering up mostly minimum wage jobs. The public is saying, we are awash in jobs; we need better wages. I think these employee bonuses are teasers...or maybe appeasers. Just enough til the people forget.
It's a common legislative practice. You make a benefit a single precedent, or the cut-off a condition subsequent, and you can see it's just a buy-off. The Tax Act has this...tax cuts for middle income families terminate six years out (a condition subsequent); tax cuts for corporations are permanent. The message is: you're getting a tax-cut too, only until you forget about it.
I believe there should be some sort of parity...if corporations get permanent tax cuts, they ought to pass it down in the form of permanent wage increases for their employees. Otherwise, trickle-down isn’t working, is it? A single bonus is a cop-out.

What did I say?: "...generally, employers are delivering up mostly minimum wage jobs." These monthly job reports that--on TV News--you see in monthly and quarterly intervals, are reporting on disproportionately minimum-wage jobs--Taco Bells and MacDonalds. There are jobs, but they are all compressed into low wage slots.

That's total bullshit.
The federal minimum wage is superseded by state minimum wage, so analysis of the FMW is as meaningless as tits on a bull. That’s what comes from Republican obstructionism in Congress.
You’ve got so many sleights of hand that you learn from your Koch Bros./George Mason University websites.
Pew Research wrote:Economists continue to debate the extent to which minimum-wage laws reduce poverty, income inequality and/or overall employment.
Do you see where this goes? So, the RW would say, let’s do away with minimum wages since they aren’t doing any good anyway. The FMW is so low that it can’t be effective. The answer is to raise the FMW, not forego it.

That's pure bullshit, Maddog...
America often tops the llist of worst performers in OECD countries when comparing the proportions of minimum wage jobs, part-time and short-contract work, and casualised and insecure jobs..
Closer to 20% than "4%".
Furthermore : When you put up the total number of new part-time, casual and minimum wage jobs as well as full-time jobs on one side, then subtract the number of those full-time/award wage jobs that have been lost over the same period -- then, the actual number of productive hours worked are dropping, not increasing. (Same in Oz, Britain and Europe too, and becoming ever worse with increasing automation and "off-shoring", added into the mix..).
Never let a small thing like the truth get in the way of a good right-wing rant against workers, wages and conditions, though !!!

Re: AT&T plans to give $1,000 bonuses to 200,000 employees because of tax reform.
In 2016, 79.9 million workers age 16 and older in the United States were paid at hourly rates, representing 58.7 percent of all wage and salary workers. Among those paid by the hour, 701,000 workers earned exactly the prevailing federal minimum wage of $7.25 per hour. About 1.5 million had wages below the federal minimum. Together, these 2.2 million workers with wages at or below the federal minimum made up 2.7 percent of all hourly paid workers.
The percentage of hourly paid workers earning the prevailing federal minimum wage or less declined from 3.3 percent in 2015 to 2.7 percent in 2016. This remains well below the percentage of 13.4 recorded in 1979, when data were first collected on a regular basis

Are restaurant workers included in that figure? Because they can be paid below minimum wage as long as their tips take them up to minimum wage.

Pew Research is not bullshit. I don't give a fuck if your too stupid to not know that.
Post your link to you findings as to what percentage of the US works at minimum wage.
Um...if your going to be so rude, perhaps this isn't the place to call home.

Ok. Maybe I’ll take a look. I admit economics are not my strong point. Always good to try and learn though. That’s why libraries need funding

The link from the department of labor spells it pretty clear. At least you admit economics are not your thing. That's far better than just making broad, sweeping, incorrect comments.

Now, it will only include restaurant workers that don't make over 7.25 including tips. My youngest is a waitress while she pretends to go to school. She gets paid 2.13 but makes about 15 bucks an hour.

Senior junior is currently a bartender in an upscale restaurant in Phoenix while in school (graduates end of this month but can’t take national boards toll April) and depending on night can make some big bucks. Some nights (early in week) he tries to avoid as they are slow and almost not worth the gas money.
Junior junior when in high school was at IHOP and got $2.50 an hour plus free soft drinks and a meal if working more than 4 hours, plus the tips. It was notorious for people stiffing the wait staff. He currently works 3 jobs as a teaching assistant to a professor, reffing and coaching soccer and working for campus rec. He’s in Flagstaff which opted out of Prop 206 which just made minimum wage here in AZ go up to $10.50 an hour plus at least 1 hour of sick time per 30 hours worked.

Yeah, IHOP doesn't have alcohol so the tabs are too small. That is one of those jobs that is probably about at minimum wage and most folks only do on the side or for a short period of time.

Yeah, but what part of DOL; and for what reason? DOL produces many facts...so many, in fact, that one could cherry pick them and come up with a thesis that the moon is made of green cheese. Your reasoning is completely off. Alt.right arguments depend upon easy language and selective perception. That's precisely what you were giving us when you argued that minimum wage is useless.

What does that matter? You're not proposing marriage, but purporting to argue a point. It may be arrogant to argue that George Mason University and Charles Koch are biased, but it needs to be said in order to allow people to evaluate the source. You've got an alt.right argument by the tail, and you should expect a rough ride.

Re: AT&T plans to give $1,000 bonuses to 200,000 employees because of tax reform.
Rep. Chris Collins, a New York Republican, on Tuesday cited pressure from donors as an imperative for the GOP to pass its tax bill.
"My donors are basically saying, 'Get it done or don't ever call me again,'" Collins told reporters.
Republican leaders have portrayed the drive for tax reform as a benefit for middle-class families, often at the expense of special interests.

I think Republicans know they are going to get creamed in the up-coming November elections. So, their attitude on the Tax Act has been to say, Meh...get what you can,
while you can. The bill is so blatantly pro-wealthy, it's like taking a crap in one of those run-down outhouses...you rub your hands in dirt afterwards to get the stench off.
That's the very distaste that Collins is expressing. But it will cost Republicans in the long run. Remember, when it comes to special interests, it's dollars versus votes. Dollars don't get you elected; votes do.
Collins would do well to remember: Donors make noise; only voters make hay.
