Mass killer and cult leader Charles Manson dies aged 83

Charles Manson, the cult leader who sent followers known as the "Manson Family" out to commit gruesome murders, shattering the peace-and-love ethos of the 1960s hippie era in California, has died. He was 83.

Manson, whose name to this day is synonymous with unspeakable violence and madness, died of natural causes at Kern County hospital, according to a California Department of Corrections statement.

Serving a life term for orchestrating one of the most notorious crimes in US history, Manson had been imprisoned for more than 45 years at California State Prison, Corcoran.

In the 1960s, Manson, an ex-convict, assembled a group of runaways and outcasts known as the "Manson Family."

In the summer of 1969, he directed his mostly young, female followers to murder seven people in what prosecutors said was part of a plan to incite a race war.

Does anyone remember the beautiful Sharon Tate...the actress who was brutally murdered by his gang whilst she was heavily pregnant?

I remember seeing the film 'Valley of the dolls' when I was young...she made quite an impression on me at the time, so lovely, such a horrible waste of life.

I seem to remember the cult led by him had a hit list of celebs and their families. The only name I can remember that was on it was Doris Days son.

Didn't they cut the baby out of Sharon Tates stomach? One of the girls did that. He got others to do the killing for him. Complete mental case, it missed at all.

And Brian Wilson of The Beach Boys. A lot of celebrities. I believe he was actually after the owner of the house, Sharon and Roman were just renting. A truly tragic case of wrong place and wrong time.

In one way, I see this case as being a good argument for opposing the death sentencing in too many cases, and for locking murderous bastards and serial killers up for life instead...

Manson had suffer his punishment for more than 45 years; re-starting his sentence after each failed appearance before a parole board..

If he 'd been executed back in 1970, some people may have felt some sense of revenge back then, but Manson himself wouldn't have received quite the degree of punishment that 45+ years amounts to.

He was originally sentenced to death but that was changed after the law re the death penalty was dropped in California.

I would vote for the death penalty in this country if there was ever a referendum.
Revenge and knowing someone is suffering by keeping them alive by incarcerating them for life is imo the worst reason for not reintroducing the death penalty.

I want them to suffer, hangings the easy way out for them.

He was a vicious evil man, so he deserved to sit in a cell for many years.

Also with many who get the death sentence in America, they are on death row, sometimes 20 - 30 years the killed. Not right.

The federal law hasn't changed.  A Supreme Court ruling came down that said the way they killed violated the cruel and unusual punishment clause of the Constitution.  A lot of states took advantage of this hiatus to say, we're going to drop executions.  California was the largest of these.

Other states--typically the southern, pro gun states--have amended the way they execute people, and then gone on their merry way with executions.  Texas is the largest of these.

Let's not forget who did the actual killing - in a particularly vicious way. His "followers" didn't have to do what he wanted. I'm glad none of them ever got parole, despite begging to be released.

It's a pity that Linda Kasabian got away with it though. It wasn't a one-off for her - she went with them to the LaBianca house the night after the murders of Sharon Tate and her friends.
