Now he was an ok bloke.
Veteran Labour politician Tony Benn has died at home today at the age of 88, his family has said in a statement.
The former cabinet minister died this morning at his home in west London surrounded by family members.
In a statement his children Stephen, Hilary, Melissa and Joshua said: 'It is with great sadness that we announce that our father Tony Benn died peacefully early this morning at his home in west London surrounded by his family.

This is a very sad day - I did not agree with his opinions but I had the greatest of respect for him and this news leaves me with a heavy heart. He was truly a great man.

You may be very surprised to hear this but I to shall miss the likes of Tony Benn. I rarely agreed with a word he said but he believed in everything he said and that was good enough for me.
I read his earlier diaries and found them a fascinating insight into politics and the mind of the left.

He said what he believed in unlike most Politicians who say what they think you want to hear. I didn't agree with a word he said but he was a good reference point.

RIP Tony Benn
An old fashioned politician who eloquently said what he thought and honestly believed what he said, regardless whether it was current party lines or not.
A politician with principles and a conviction to tell it as he saw it. Sadly under "New Labour" the likes of Tony Benn was ostracised and ridiculed, he (and his like) will be sorely missed in British politics.

My point exactly. He said it as he saw it. A rarity amongst politicians. Enoch Powell so vilified by the left. and unfairly I might add, was his right wing soul mate.

A decent man who had time for everyone and never shirked a battle.
I stayed in the same hotel as he did in Preston the night before he was addressing a conference the next day. He had this knack of grabbing your attention and getting you to like him even if you didn't altogether with much of what he said. An honest politician who was great friends with Ralph Miliband and he supported his kid Ed in the election for the Labour leadership.
Two men who served their country in WWII. One a naval officer and the other a pilot officer in the RAF....

Amazing how differently the two of them were treated by The Mail, and yet they both shared the same convictions.

Exactly. Two men who actually fought for their country getting ridiculed by some people and some newspapers owned by people who would hardly strike a blow or put their lives on the line.
Disgusting cretins.

Re: Tony Benn Dies Aged 88
I remember him being interviewed about the Iraq invasion - I think it was on Sky News. He was talking about all the pictures of people being killed or hurt, and the presenter misunderstood him and said that perhaps the pictures shouldn't be shown on the TV because people will find them upsetting. He said that the public should see the pictures because they should know what's going on there.
