Tesla Roadster: Elon Musk unveils 'fastest production car ever' in shock announcement
Elon Musk, the Chief Executive of electric car maker Tesla, unveiled a surprise new vehicle on Thursday night - a roadster that he said would be the "fastest production car ever" made.
Capable of going from 0-60 mph in 1.9 seconds, the Tesla Roadster would be the first such car ever to break the two second mark, the entrepreneur said at a launch near Los Angeles.
He also said it would climb from 0 to 100 mph in 4.2 seconds and clear a quarter mile in 8.9 seconds. "This will the first time that any production car has broken 9 seconds in the quarter mile," he said
With a 200 kilowatt hour battery pack, the Tesla Roadster will have a range of 620 miles on a single charge - another new record.
"The point of doing this is to give a hardcore smackdown to gasoline cars," he said.

There was a third debut reveal at that showing, besides having the quickest road-going production electric car, and the longest range between charges...
That roadster was delivered in the back of a big prototype Tesla electric-powered semi' trailer/prime mover/"tractor trailer" size truck..

It might still be a couple of years away from mass production, but it's another step along the way to an (near-) all-electric future for most road transport.
Though also, imagining a high starting price for the initial models, it will still be some decades until they replace diesel vehicles entirely..

Most people buy sports cars for the sound they make when accelerating, You'll not get that "tingle" with Electric !

What some electric car manufacturers have done before in some cases, is add recorded/synthesised noises back onto quiet-running cars...
That also helps to provide an extra warning to pedestrians and 'cyclists that the car is approaching..
It would only be one step further to then offer 'options' such as recorded Mustang, Ferrari, Lambo', Jaguar, or classic MG sound effects.
(And, being able to turn that noise off could then provide a "stealth mode" for people who want a quiet vehicle..).
