OK, so a woman loses her military husband in a firefight in Africa. A dignitary calls her up and says, he knew when he signed up what he was getting into! What is the dignitary getting at:

___ Acknowledging husband's bravery?

___ Belittling the loss?

___ Calling the husband stupid for joining military?

___ Thinks widow is hot and wants a date?

Mad

It wasn't a list of sayings.  It was a specific incident that happened, and I wanted to hear other's opinions on it.  (Of course, some answers are just jokes I tossed in, but it's a serious question.)

A soldier dies, and this is what happened.  The critics are saying it was cruel and insensitive, the pro side says it's what you should say.  There seems to be a division of feelings about it.

So, is it cruel to tell a mother/widow that their son signed up for it?  Isn't that kinda saying, well, he asked for it so he got his due?  Or, is that more like, it's the life he wanted, and he went out bravely, the way he wanted?

Personally I think he is an insensitive bastard...its like saying to the wife of a man who dies of cancer....well you knew he was dying anyway...so what.

i think trump was right on this

the man did know what he was signing up for, he didn't trip into a careers office and sign on the line by accident, he sure as shit didn't volunteer for special forces by accident.

you snowflakes always want to blame someone else for your actions but this man was a man of honour who would spit in your face if he saw you trying to take his life choices away from him.

his death was on him,he owned his life and he owned his death. there can be no greater glory for a warrior to say the he died doing his job.

you by contrast will fade away into nothing, with nothing and no one of import to note your passing, your life's legacy will be filed away in a dusty cabinet having achieved nothing, not even used as a case study for future students

Ah I see. And you? What have you done?

Re the OP: I dont think Trump should've said it - it was insensitive and jut stupidly ignirant- but the essence of what he says is right; if you sign up to a job where you know you have a good chance of dying then yes, essentially, you do know "what you're signing up for" though no decent person would say that to a person grieving over the loss of a loved one.

So you lack the ability of empathic intelligence.

I am sure what Trump said, would be in tune more with saying this to his fellow buddies in his unit.
I imagine many would view that as something good said in his honour, but do you think all people would find such words comforting.

How about their children or the wife/husband?

They know little and see little of that time soldiers spend in combat or away from them in combat zones. They get to see them in ordinary life. Where their loss is not based on a fallen comrade, but the loss of a father/mother, a son/daughter, a husband/wife.

So do you really think his words were sensitive to the family or more sentive to how you view brothers in arms?

Rolling Eyes

You believe that the Dumpster is right on everything,  so no real surprises there...

You call others on here "snowflakes", SmellyBumTroll  --  yet your own constant whinging and whining labels you yourself as the biggest "snowflake" on NF at the moment..

If you can't see the insensitivity in just how and when Trump expressed those sentiments,  then you're just as thick as Trump himself.

Being the spineless coward that you are, Smelly' you insult every true warriors memory every time you attampt to praise true heroes by slipping into your usual slimy your trash-talking ways.. Suspect

You are being much too kind and generous to yourself there, SmellyBumster...

You are lower than the maggots crawling out of that "bloodless corpse".
