In light of the recent events in catalonia, if a group from catalonia began a campaign of armed resistance against Spain

Would they be terrorists or freedom fighters??

Good question, smells.  Terrorism is just a derogatory name.  It actually refers to the consequences of the act (terror), not to any person or political party.

If a group from Catalonia began a campaign of armed resistance against Spain it would probably be referred to as a Revolution.  That term carries on Aristotle's line of definitions--ie, monarchy, aristocracy, plutocracy, oligarchy, democracy, etc.--save that "Revolution" marks a change in the type of political system.  Revolution, or "revolve" relates to verbs of change, the same as evolve and devolve.

Although the US and the French had to kick some old world ass on the battlefield, the term 'Revolution' need not include violence.  We've heard of "Silent Revolution" or "Quiet Revolution"...to indicate change without violence.  'Revolution' refers to a rather quick, purposeful change, and probably is the obverse of 'evolution', which connotes gradual and natural (ie, not intentional).

It's not set in stone.  Marx, for one, was trying to explain industrialism in terms of a natural evolution, making it inevitable, when so many nations went through that transition (including Britain, where he lived) without any domestic war or violence.  Marx had always insisted that a revolution was a necessary polarity of the transition or political change.
