Mum And Dad ‘Fuming’ After 12-Year-Old Daughter Is ‘Treated Like A Prisoner’ At School Due To Lilac Hair
A mum and dad claim their teenage daughter has been treated “like a prisoner” by her school because she dyed her hair lilac. Kadey Wood, 12, was placed in isolation after arriving at school on the first day of term, due to her newly-coloured do. Mum Carla Wood said Kadey, a Year 8 pupil at Meopham School, Kent, coloured her hair along with friends at the beginning of the summer holidays. While the other teens’ dye washed out, Kadey’s is still visible. “She’s not even allowed out at lunch or break to see her friends - her lunch is brought to her,” said the 29-year-old mum-of-three.
“She can only leave to use the toilet.”
“It’s going to affect her learning not being with each subject teacher and not socialising with her peers.
“It has upset her because she does like school and being able to see her friends.
“I feel this will be much more detrimental to her education than a lilac tint in her hair.”

The school has said they are sticking by their uniform policy, which states hair must be a natural colour.
Wood said she is keeping Kadey at home until the colour fades. The mum said: “We were told if other children see her walking round the school building they might think it is ok to dye their hair. “It’s going to affect her learning not being with each subject teacher and not socialising with her peers.

Parents should read the school policies before choosing a school - my son dyed his hair the colours of the union jack when he was in senior school- he was told to change it to his normal colour which i totally agreed with because it is not suitable for school - the thing that did make me laugh though was that the letter I received said it was a health hazard in case another pupil was looking and bumped into a wall

Close the school (or take it and make it public)
Too soft and useless if it cant deal with unnatural hair colour.
Time to get tough on the useless institutions that can't handle the real world them selves let alone prepare students for it.

I think if schools set a standard of dress pupils should follow it, face the consequences, or find a school that doesn't have any dress code.
There is no harm at all in uniforms, setting down rules for hair colour, acceptable jewellery etc, it teaches kids about discipline and standards.
I don't agree with schools laying down the law about buying from particular stockists, insisting on leather shoes etc.....that's nit picking, but I think certain dress codes should be adhered to.

that's fine but then NO public funding
If it cant embrace secular freedoms then it should get nothing from a secular government.
Plus it is only some achievement less loser that sets rules like that, successful companies don't because the mindset that sets those rules is unable innovate and evolve and thus they go out of business without government hand outs.

The point is on whether the rules are over the top, of which here they certainly are.
The school is trying to maintain something archaic, not found in everyday life with many jobs today.
Many people dye their hair and it simple does not effect their performance in the roles they carry out.
Its simple pathetic that a school has such a rule, when it should be making it as comfortable as possible for a student. Even worse the punishment is from the worst ignorance also. To isolate a child that way, over something that is not even going to effect other students. This is just some teachers on a power trip.
I agree with Veya, take funding away from such schools, as they are meant to be secular, not throw backs from the Victorian age
The worst aspect of this, is that a school is overruling a parents decision to allow their children to dye their hair.

i was school governor for many years and met a headmaster from another school who had kind of been headhunted from a different area. he set up a meeting for the parents and incoming students way before the start of term and they were ordered to attend. he then proceeded to tell the parents and students exactly what his rules were going to be. he then said if you do not agree with said rules please can you raise your hand. apparantly no one did. he then said ok for anyone who does not agree with my rules but doesn't feel comfortable saying so here, that's fine but i strongly urge you right now to cancel your application for this school and apply somewhere else because what i will not tolerate is parents arguing with me at a later date about how i choose to run my school - he became incredibly popular, and much respected

Whether they want to get themselves in the paper as you claim.
If something is wrong, of which these rules most certainly are and even worse the punishment this girl has received. Even more so a school overruling a parents decision on something. How else do you expect this to be tackled?
A letter to the school or make this as public as possible to garner more attention, to bring pressure on that school to change archaic rules, that have no place in the 21st century?

Didge, then they need to petition the school governors to change the rules.
As I've said before, parents need to be aware of a school's rules. If you don't like them, then take your children elsewhere.
Senior Jr got dress coded twice in the U.K. Did I immediately run screaming to the head demanding special preferential treatment for him? No. I told him don't be a berk and don't do it again, otherwise there would be punishment at home too.
Hell I got done back in 84/85 a few times. Did I whine about and rent my hair and gnash my teeth about it? No. I said bollocks and kept it outside of school time.

But the school rules are the problem and even more so many parents cannot even get their first choices with schools. Some often being much further away, if they cannot get those first choices. So its not that easy to take your children elsewhere when the competition is so high to even get your children into local schools here now. I also think that is missing the point here, that then a school, can be over zealous in its rules, based over competition to get into said local schools.
You can of course petition the governors, but lets face it, many are also parents generally that are the founders of said rules in the first place. The point being missed here in all of this, is the treatment by the school towards that child, which is inherently wrong. Schools in some cases hold to some antiquated view on such rules about uniform and dress. They do nothing to further education, but are mainly formed based around a view on discipline itself
Now in your situation or your sons, were you isolated from the rest of school, all day throughout lessons and breaks? So I am sorry Cass, its not even comparable and again ignores the fact that there should not even be said rules in the first place. Some people may want to knuckle under, not saying you would, but I would not tolerate that happening to any child, its immoral and wrong on every level. We live in an age where its the norm that people dye their hair. To make out its wrong, is not only poor, it takes away the individuality of people. Hence the best way to combat such a school, is to make that issue as public as possible.

You'd better believe your bunions I was isolated. Made to sit in the outer office of the deputy head for the whole day and to do work. Then I got in trouble at home since they were informed by telephone. It was a ridiculous rule, not allowed to wear blue denim but we could in other colors? But I broke the rule and dealt with the consequences.
I had to take off work and go fetch the boy since he was sent home. He went to his room and the PlayStation and phone was taken out till the next day.
You said it yourself. Discipline. School is about education as well as discipline.
I see the point of a strict uniform code. Having grown up in the states where the bullying was in extreme if you didn't have the "right" clothes, or hairstyle etc...I much prefer a uniform. As well as when I became the mum in the morning trying to get the precious darlings dressed and out the door in time, it was so much easier knowing exactly what they were wearing. Bit oh god the missing PE kit that was moldering in the bottom of the bag. Ewwwwww.
Seriously life is full of rules. That's just simply how it is. Whether it's fair or not is all down to individual perception. Society functions with rules. Otherwise it's anarchy.
What everyone seems to forget is that the majority of parents/children follow the rules just fine with no major issues. It's just seems that with the rise of instant fame, certain individuals seems to think that they're special and will rush to make it all about them when they are the ones who didnt take personal responsibility for their decisions and don't want to face the consequences.

Re: Mum And Dad ‘Fuming’ After 12-Year-Old Daughter Is ‘Treated Like A Prisoner’ At School Due To Lilac Hair
So even yourself admit it was a ridiculous rule and it is a ridiculous rule as it does not achieve anything. Where for one, I am totally against school uniforms. Which are born from a time of Elitism, that serves nobody but the school itself and hardly ever the child itself.
Kids should be made to feel as comfortable as possible when learning and uniforms never do that. Yes some may like them, but they are a mare in both winter and summer for children. Where again its all about an image for the school based off the actions of that child. Which is ridiculous to think that a child can leave school and then be later blamed for something and further disciplined outside schools hours, simple for being in that uniform.
I had to wear hand me downs and at first had the mick taken out of me wearing a uniform and I dealt with this standing up to them. So on that front its a myth that people look the same. As the richer kids still have more expensive shoe-wear, watches, shirts ect than the poorer kids, who still get picked on and does nothing to actually solve the problem of bullying. It in fact tries to mask this through a uniform, failing to do so. Never teaching children how to deal with said problems. As its not teaching children to accept others for who they are.
The point is though why is there such ridiculous rules like this in what is now a very open secular society? This is the point you keep refusing to question or show why it is even needed. There is no way you can justify a rule to restrict people dying their hair or show in anyway it would hinder their ability to study. Its simple like I say all about the schools image, how it wants the world to see it. Still living within Victorian principles, straitjacketing children. So such rules are simple not needed and formed from a misguided belief, this is how you discipline children this way. Which such a belief, never places the interests of the child here, but as seen the snobbery of the school. Kids should be as comfortable as possible when studying and such outdated rules are nothing more than archaic and belong in a museum.

All this is solved with Robot teachers
a robot teacher would just be focused on the child's education
human teachers are too distracted by coloured hair and clicking pens

Re: Mum And Dad ‘Fuming’ After 12-Year-Old Daughter Is ‘Treated Like A Prisoner’ At School Due To Lilac Hair
I was in the library yesterday to use a computer for an hour... I got put next to a woman who was most distracting and annoying... she was hammering away at the keyboard so hard that it sounded like a herd of elephants passing, and on top of that she constanly said all the words to herself in a sort of whispered hissing sound too...!
Because of this constant annoying distraction it took me twice as long to do what I was doing because she kept breaking my concentration with her noise...!!!
