Irma wipes out TWO Caribbean islands: Category 5 hurricane hammers Puerto Rico with 185mph winds after destroying 95 per cent of tiny Barbuda and St Martin, killing at least eight
[*]'Monster' Hurricane Irma started hammering Puerto Rico with 185mph winds and heavy rain late last night
[*]The category 5 storm reduced Caribbean islands of Barbuda and St Martin to rubble with deadly destruction
[*]Roughly 95% of homes and properties were destroyed on both islands with Barbuda now 'barely habitable'
[*]At least six people died on the French part of St Martin, while a two-year-old child was killed in Barbuda
[*]Some 900,000 people are without power on Puerto Rico and at least 50,000 people are without water
[*]Irma was following a projected path that would see it hit the Dominican Republic and Haiti on Thursday
[*]The hurricane is expected to continue past eastern Cuba before veering north for Florida at the weekend
[*]Red Cross said it is preparing for 'a major humanitarian response' as UN estimated 37million will be affected
[*]Mandatory evacuations were ordered in the Florida Keys and parts of Miami as the scale of the storm emerged

Early reports today also had 800,000 already 'homeless' after those first few hours as well...

I guess The WALL will have to be put on hold a) to help fund overseas aid to rebuild the Carribean islands devastated, and b) rebuld huge swathes of Flirida that look likely to to destroyed as well.

Largest storm ever on earth, they are saying. And another hurricane right behind it.
Weather service said it would be a "Category 6" if there was such a thing. But the rating only goes up to Cat-5 (sustained winds of 185 mph for 30+ hours).
Heading dead-bang up the Florida east coast. Instead of Irma, they should call it "Treyvon's Revenge".

Strange thing. Republicans don't dispute it, they just say "I'm not expert, but..." And then they pivot to discuss tax cuts.

Well there's not enough "big fat cat" profit in global warming so why would they need to be experts?

There's plenty of profit in ignoring global warming, tho. They don't really refute it, they just ignore it.

Just talked to my dad in Fort Lauderdale. They're not evacuating yet and neither is my friend down towards the Keys but I wish they would. Friend in Georgia has gone to stay with relatives in Tennessee. Luckily my Houston family was all safe with minimal flood damage. Also not forgetting friends and family in Oregon and Montana. Scary times

Trump does. So do his minions.
A few here do too, which if you assume that as a collective, we are a reasonable representative of humanity, it also follows that a fair number of people will also deny it.

Powerful hurricanes are not a new phenomenon that have only started happening 'since records began'...!

The news here 3 hours ago reported that there were already around 700,000 people in Florida heading inland...
While those staying have mostly been barricading, boarding-up and sandbagging in preparation for the last few days..
As seen in Texas last week, authorities and emergency services are better prepared than they were back with 'Katrina', 12 years ago.

Unfortunately, Florida is so thin that there are only two highways out of it: I-75, on the west side, and I-95 on the east side. Both highways are in traffic grid right now, in anticipation of the approach of "Trayvon's Revenge".
Also, Florida is running short of petrol. A motor wastes a gallon of gas as it sits, idling. With 7-hour waits in traffic, seems better to walk.

I have a fb friend in Florida. She posted this morning that she was losing her internet and she was pretty scared.
I haven't heard from her since. Makes it all very real though.

Thank you ladies. The friend in the Keys did leave finally very early this morning and is almost out of state. Problem is if the trajectory stays to what is currently forecast, the whole state plus parts of surrounding states will be hammered, so there really isn't a place to hide in-state.
For once the sister and I are in agreement about the stupidity of my father. He's a stubborn idiot.
Will keep you posted. X

Very lucky. The storm has moved farther west, and is expected to make the turn north along the west side of Florida. Expected it hit land at Ft. Meyers.
But that means more warm water beneath it, and it could return to a Cat 5, It will cross the Keys at Marathon Key.
