I reckon she must have been pissed up. It's hard to imagine someone behaving like that when they're sober. Laughing

It's especially a southern thing.  It is nice, although I am taken aback when someone calls me 'Sir'.  Fook, my father is Sir!

But you'll never see it cross racial lines in the south, because it's a clear class distinction:

"Tony, did yu tip the niggas?"

Turning to his white friend, explaining, "Suh, we's always sure ta treat the niggas kindly."

The irony, eh?  In the south the difference between black and white is so ingrained, that calling someone "Sir" or "Ma'am" is a way of saying "Ya ain't no nigga."  It is nice...but not when you put it in the context it deserves.

(Of course, blacks must always call whites 'Sir' and 'Ma'am', or risk being hung.)

You'll be accusing me of encouraging racism next just because I like being called "Ma'am". Rolling Eyes

Yes, it is nice if you are on the right side of the fence.

Actually, I have adopted it myself, and it works very well.  I still talk that way.

The only time it gets in the way, I've found, was at university, meeting girls.  I found it introduced an immediate barrier of difficult formality, which then had to be overcome.

which side of the fence is the right side? on the pavement or on your own property? and why is it different depending on the side

i didn't know you would address the girls at uni as ma'am tbh i thought that would be reserved for the professors and other female older staff etc but not for girls of your own age at uni

what would be the polite but friendly way of addressing girls of the same sort of age group as you then?

The fence is between black and white. You won't be addressed by terms of respect if you are black.

Yes, I did...and I still address women as 'ma'am'.  I worked at Berkeley's Computer Center, and dealt with the student public who were learning, running project programs.  I just decided it was appropriate to address people as 'ma'am' or 'sir'.

The men were always appreciative of respect.  The women were not used to it, particularly from an age cohort.  Some took it as respect, but some took it as a form of rejection...like, being distant.

I always felt I was being friendly by being respectful. It was the response that I noticed. Being overly-formal appeared to resented by some...it seemed like they felt I was--I don't know--being distant, aloof, or superior.

lol, yes i know, quill - i was playing with you simply because i honestly believe that the racist issue is so exaggerated. i'm not saying it doesn't exist but that video of candace owens is just one of many saying ''hang on, media. wtf are you saying and doing? actually, we don't all hate each other''.

you are being manipulated into thinking it represents the majority when in reality it really doesn;t. well not from what i;ve seen anyway

i know racist people exist and maybe south has more than it;s fair share but they have no influence whatsoever....blit like that mentor character that used to sit dribbling over at flaps

such people are probably born miserable and just need something/someone to hate on.

like i said, though, it's NOT the majority
