New wonder drug hailed as biggest breakthrough in fight against heart attacks and cancer
A new class of drugs which could prevent thousands of heart attacks and deaths from cancer has been hailed as the biggest breakthrough since statins. Scientists last night said the discovery ushered in “a new era of therapeutics” which work in an entirely different way to conventional treatment. As well as cutting the risk of a heart attack by one quarter, the drugs halved the chances of dying from cancer and protected against gout and arthritis.
Cholesterol-busting statins are given to millions of adults deemed to be at risk of heart disease.
But half of heart attacks occur in people who do not have high cholesterol at all.
Now scientists have found that reducing inflammation in the body can protect against a host of conditions - with a “really dramatic effect” on cancer deaths.

But this isn't new news. For years it's been known that chronic inflammation is one of the main causes of illness in the body. Habitual or environmental factors, such as poor diet, lack of exercise, stress, smoking, pollution, poor oral health and excessive alcohol consumption etc, all contribute to it.
What people need to do is change their lifestyles and be aware of what they put into their bodies.

So how do you change pollution going into the bodies of humans?
Agreed this needs to be tackled, and whilst this continues, you should be praising such a breakthrough to help combat such life threatening illnesses.

Call me a cynic, but I can't help feel that this is yet another huge cash cow from the drug companies. How about forcing the food industry to stop putting sugar/antibiotics/growth hormones/insecticides into our food chain? How about educating children about what they put into their mouths/lungs/bloodstream. Instead, we're all slaves to the marketing of what a massive financial entity wants us to buy into. We covet what we see. Even our so called diet products were a load of pish...so rammed with sugar in order for it to even taste of something. And now we have ice cream that refuses to melt in sunshine.
Pollution does need to be addressed. I think it being addressed, but it's a slow process and in the meantime kids are being born with asthma like never before.

How is something that will save lives, a huge cash cow?
Do you even know and understand the amount of money spent that goes into researching new drugs and how long it tales before they are approved?
Seriously Horatio?
Do you really think where people study to save lives, and that many drugs researched never make it onto the market and no money is made and actually millions lost. Is about a huge cash cow for pharmaceutical companies?

Because alternatives could do the same thing. The drugs companies make massive amounts of money out of the sick and dying. Huge profits. Now, why would they want to make huge profits out of the sick and dying?
Pharmaceutical companies have developed the majority of medicines known to humankind, but they have profited handsomely from doing so, and not always by legitimate means.
Dr Brian Druker, director of the Knight Cancer Institute has asked these drug companies: "If you are making $3bn a year on cancer drug Gleevec, could you get by with $2bn? When do you cross the line from essential profits to profiteering?"

So what you are saying is that they should not make any money?
In a fair world, all well and good, but then what person would go into such an industry, knowing then they would be out of business, if they did not look to make some money?
Granted they should not be making the vast fortunes they do and agree on they should not make such a profit and more money goes back into the researching.
The majority of medicines have been found through research and are not known, as its an ongoing process.

Aspirin used to be the panacea for curing a whole host of unrelated diseases.
Are statins now taking that role? - if it's true I hope someone does not jump in and buy the firm and then immediately increase the price a thousandfold like someone did with another vital drug.

Do you take aspirin Jules? I've always been a little wary of aspirin for some reason.
