When Gadget Show presenter Jason Bradbury watched his five-year-old daughter Marnie struggling to climb the stairs, he was naturally concerned. A few weeks before, Marnie had contracted a virus at school which had, it seemed, been nothing unusual. But when Marnie’s knees and wrists began to swell, she lost flexibility in her joints and tired easily, the family decided it was time to seek specialist help.
To their shock, rheumatologists at Great Ormond Street Hospital diagnosed juvenile idiopathic arthritis (JIA) – inflammation of the joints caused by the immune system attacking the body.
Treating the condition involves taking immuno-suppressant drugs which have potentially severe side effects if used long-term.
The family decided instead to investigate alternative ways to maintain Marnie’s health, and it prompted a profound change in the family’s lives.
After rejecting one type of conventional drug therapy, Marnie’s mother Claire left her job as a project manager and retrained as a nutritionist – and put together a diet that involved Marnie sipping chicken-bone broth for breakfast. Remarkably, it may have worked. Marnie, 12, takes no drugs and has had no symptoms for two-and- a-half years. Her family believe this is thanks to her lifestyle.
In fact, Marnie’s fitness has improved so dramatically that she will compete in her first triathlon – a long-distance race that involves cycling, running and swimming – in November, on the Caribbean paradise island of Nevis.
About 12,000 children in the UK have JIA. The cause is unknown, although infections may trigger the immune system to become over-active in some people, which in turn can lead to inflammation.

Is there a gelatin-type substance to be found in chicken bones? That's the only thing I can think of that would make sense.

Yes. It's to do with the cartilage and bone. The collagen in bone broth heals your gut lining and reduces intestinal inflammation. And the minerals in the bone support the immune system.

‘I only know one case out of thousands still getting flare-ups in adulthood.’
Dr Lucy Wedderburn, director of Arthritis Research UK’s Centre for Adolescent Rheumatology, added: ‘There may be links between the balance of gut bacteria we all live with and arthritis, and we are investigating this topic. So far we really don’t know.’

It must be similar to the gellatin powder that my friend's husband takes. He has terrible bone and joint problems and he swears by it.

Interesting. For a while I was having severe upper arm issues with a combo of tendinitis and bursitis in both arms and a mate told me about green-lipped mussel pills. Good for anti-inflammatory purposes. That combined with acupuncture and very deep painful tissue massage seems to have helped. Haven't done any of it for about 3 months and it's starting to come back.

Bone broth is the new fancier chicken soup. I don't think it's a cure but I think certain elements within do help.

Chicken soup as a remedy for colds and illness is old as the hills. Most people seem to think a can of chicken soup does the same thing but you need to boil the whole carcass for a couple of hours.

You'd probably benefit from regular massage. I have several clients who've suffered with terrible back pain, specially between the shoulders and neck. After several sessions they're much better but if they miss a few sessions they really feel it. Try taking freshly ground turmeric but ensure you mix it with oil first before you take it. It's a very powerful anti inflammatory as is ginger.

Chicken would be out for me, as would any kind of gelatin, which is usually in marshmallows.

Exactly. Good old fashioned home made. Roasting the bones first really helps too.

I'm going tomorrow. I need to get back into the habit of once a month massage. I also find reflexology very helpful too. My son got me a TENS unit at Christmas and that helps but again it's getting back into the habit. My C7 is cracked - no accident/not born that way , but head banging lol. Honest truth.

Yes about the turmeric and ginger. Cinnamon too. Again...broke the habit...blah blah blah. The last 6 months have been a right kerfuffle.

depends on the bones and how much cartilage.
this is the reason for shark fin soup (shark fins are a lump of cartilage gelatin)
also why 'joint' bones work better to make broth
