James Bond isn't a science-fiction alien character though is he. Although still fictional, Bond has always existed in 'our world'. He has an established backstory that really only works if he is a white male. Being black would not make sense for Bond.

The Doctor is a regenerating alien, who, canonically, could regenerate with multiple heads, no arms, tentacles or indeed be a woman (just the The Master did).

'Should' is purely subjective in this case. Altering The Doctor's gender for one of his/her regeneration cycles alters nothing in the sci-fi universe the series takes place in.

I imagine the change is being done to 'do something different'. The series has not been as successful as it was in the first ten years following its 2005 return. Naturally the people behind the show want to keep it going but know something needs to keep people hooked rather than 'more of the same'. Having a female Doctor will probably alter the dynamics a little, especially in her interactions with other characters (male, female, villains etc). That will add a new dimension and keep things interesting. It isn't just 'for the sake of being PC', that is BS. It is a show that is loved trying to stay relevant and be 'new' in an increasingly competitive market.

And it DOESN'T break the universe's continuity.

Tommy would have had the same reaction if the Doctor had regenerated as a black man, Asian man, gay man or with a disability. He obviously has no real interest in the series whatsoever.

So you have no objection to a Time Lord, which can change into any life form on regeneration, as long as its male? 

Again based on what exactly?

Dr Who was written as an alien that changes on regeneration. Previous information provided has shown that Time Lords can change into any form and that there is already other Time Lords that have regenerated as female and male.

So it changes with every regeneration, hence the silliness of your claim to what something should be with Dr Who.

So what you and Tommy thinks really does not matter on this.

The simple answer is that if you do not like it, then that is tough luck.

Nobody is forcing either of you to watch it.

Dr Who may lose a minor amount of fans who are dinosaurs, but will no doubt gain loads of new fans.

As for James Bond,  James will always be a man --  but why not a "Jamie Bond" spinoff --  where an unknown/'long-lost' daughter to one of his many former foreign love-interests crops up, to be recruited into MI6  ? Could even make her black, Latino or Asian.

Now that could well be a future 'reboot' worth watching..
