Do you think a woman being Dr Who is...?
Dr Who
Few TV casting announcements can have been as long awaited as the name of Doctor Who's 13th Time Lord and when the revelation finally came it sent social media into a frenzy.
Hundreds of thousands of people around the world joined the debate about the news that Jodie Whittaker is to star as the first female Doctor.

More lefty pc nonsense... why cant they just leave things alone...?

Why can't she be a woman? Not that I care either way, I stopped watching when David eye-candy Tennant left.

Re: Dr Who
Haven't watched since Smith, but the fact the bad guy 'The Master' has been a woman set up an in universe canon of the Doctor possibly regenerating into a woman. Since you didn't know that I'm presuming you're not actually a fan of the show. Oh, and it is Science-Fiction btw, so getting upset over the switching gender of an ALIEN is rather ridiculous don't you think?

Re: Dr Who
The producers of Dr Who "leaked" the rumour last year that they were considering a female and/or a black/coloured Doctor for the 13th regeneration...
As Eilzel properly points out, anyone who seems upset/angry/confused/dismissive about the topic can't be a genuine Dr Who fan anyway..
If they were an earnest "Whovian", they would have been aware of the debate over this past year. I believe there could have been other female 'Time Lords' besides Missy/The Master over the years, as well ?

Re: Dr Who
Tommy, the Doctors have all been quite different to each other. Dark, funny, eccentric, grumpy, ridiculous, romantic, cold, caring etc. I'm sorry but to claim you have watched for years doesn't seem convincing. Missy was a female Master as wolf says, and you obviously weren't aware of this as a possibility until now. To think the Doctors were generally the same is ridiculous. And as Eds says, it's sci fi, so anything goes as long as it makes sense in its universe, which it does.

Re: Dr Who
References to the Doctor's family are rare in the programme. During the first two seasons he travelled with his granddaughter, Susan Foreman, who has since been referred to occasionally and who returned in The Five Doctors. In "Smith and Jones", he mentioned having a brother. During his second incarnation, when asked about his family, the Doctor says his memories of them are alive when he wants them to be and otherwise they sleep in his mind (The Tomb of the Cybermen). In The Curse of Fenric, when asked if he has family, the Seventh Doctor replies that he does not know. In the 1996 television movie, the Eighth Doctor remarks that he is half-human on his mother's side. Throughout the revival, the Doctor routinely attempts to change the topic when questioned about being a parent or his family life, as in "Fear Her", "The Beast Below" and "A Good Man Goes to War". In "The Empty Child", Dr. Constantine says to him, "Before this war began,[note 1] I was a father and a grandfather. Now I'm neither. But I'm still a doctor. The Ninth Doctor's reply is, "Yeah. I know the feeling."
In The End of Time, a mysterious individual, referred to only in the credits as "The Woman", appears unexpectedly to Wilfred Mott throughout both episodes. She is later revealed to be a dissident Time Lady, who opposed the Time Lord High Council's plan to escape the Time War. When she reveals her face to the Doctor, his reaction indicates that he recognises her. Julie Gardner, in the episode's commentary, states that while some have speculated that the Time Lady is the Doctor's mother, neither she nor Russell T. Davies are willing to comment on her identity. When later asked by Wilfred who she was, the Doctor evades answering the question, making their connection unclear. In Doctor Who: The Writer's Tale – The Final Chapter, Russell T Davies states that he created the character to be the Doctor's mother and this is what actress Claire Bloom was told when she was cast.
In spin-off media, several individuals related to the Doctor have made appearances which don't appear in the television series, such as his grandchildren John and Gillian, who appeared alongside the First and Second Doctors in comics and annuals. Two different, conflicting accounts exist on the descendants of Susan after leaving the Doctor. In the audio play "An Earthly Child", it is revealed that Susan has had a child, Alex Campbell, the Doctor's great-grandson. Alternatively, in the novel Legacy of the Daleks, Susan and her husband David adopt three children whom they name David Campbell Jr, Ian and Barbara; named after David himself, Ian Chesterton and Barbara Wright, respectively. Irving Braxiatel, a character first introduced in the novel Theatre of War, was initially hinted at, and later confirmed to be, the Doctor's biological older brother. He has since become a recurring character, especially within the Big Finish spin-off audio series Gallifrey and Bernice Summerfield. In the novel Father Time, the Eighth during his hundred-year exile on Earth, found an orphaned Time Lord girl named Miranda whom he adopted and raised until she was 16. In the novel Sometime Never..., she returned to the Doctor with her daughter Zezanne. She was also the central character in a three-issue comic book series published by Comeuppance Comics in 2003. Author Lance Parkin, who devised the character of Miranda, has hinted that her real father is a future incarnation of the Doctor which, if so, would make Zezanne the Doctor's biological granddaughter as well. The Virgin New Adventures novel Lungbarrow presents an alternative take on the Doctor's origins, suggesting that Time Lords are "loomed" in large batches of "cousins" and not produced via sexual reproduction. Lungbarrow portrays the Doctor as being one of 45 cousins grown from his house's genetic loom as an adult. By contrast, the TV programme has shown Time Lords as children, and stated that Time Lords can have sexual relationships.
The Doctor is assumed to be or to have been married to Susan's grandmother, including by head writer Steven Moffat. In "The Wedding of River Song", he marries recurring companion and love interest River Song. Comments by both River and the Doctor in the seventh series, particularly in "The Angels Take Manhattan", confirmed that they were married; in "The Name of the Doctor", the Doctor refers to her as his "wife" after seeing a grave stone with her name on it, after initially answering "yes" when Clara asks if she was an "ex". The End of Time references the Tenth Doctor marrying Queen Elizabeth I and implies that the two had sexual intercourse, the Doctor stating: "her nickname [the Virgin Queen] is no longer...". The joke is continued in "The Beast Below", featuring future British monarch Queen Elizabeth X or Liz Ten, and the marriage is finally shown in "The Day of the Doctor" during an adventure with Zygons. In the 2010 Christmas special, "A Christmas Carol", the Eleventh Doctor accidentally married Marilyn Monroe but later questioned the authenticity of the chapel in which they were married. Steven Moffat did not consider the marriages to Elizabeth I and Marilyn Monroe to count when questioned on how many wives the Doctor had had, remarking that he was married to Susan's grandmother and River Song.

The writers/producers say it has been mentioned in past episodes that the doctor can assume the female gender. It's not new.

Re: Dr Who
The Doctor has always regenerated into a humanoid form. However, when explaining the process of regeneration to Rose at the end of "The Parting of the Ways", the Ninth Doctor suggests that his new form could have "two heads", or even "no head", and in the 2005 Children in Need special, which takes place immediately after that episode, the newly regenerated Tenth Doctor, while examining his new body, makes a point of checking that he has two arms, two legs and two hands, implying that regenerations can sometimes result in physically deformed or non-humanoid forms; it is not clear whether or not these two moments are intended as jokes.
Whether Time Lords could change sex in regeneration was not explicitly addressed onscreen for much of the show's run. In the second part of The End of Time (2010), the Eleventh Doctor briefly checks for an Adam's apple upon regeneration to confirm if he is still a man. In "The Doctor's Wife" (2011), he reminisces about an old friend and fellow Time Lord, the Corsair, who had been both a man and a woman several times. In "The Night of the Doctor" (2013), the Sisterhood of Karn specify the Doctor could choose to change sex using one of their elixirs which influence the outcome of regeneration. "Dark Water/Death in Heaven" (2014) shows that the Doctor's longtime nemesis the Master has become a woman, taking the name Missy. In "Hell Bent" (2015), the Time Lord General regenerates into a younger woman, and states that her previous incarnation was her only male form. In "World Enough and Time" (2017), the Doctor tells his companion, in reference to Missy, that Time Lords are mostly beyond gender norms and stereotypes: From "The Doctors" onwards, Jodie Whittaker will portray the Thirteenth Doctor, the Doctor's first female incarnation.
Female Doctors were previously explored in spin-off productions; Joanna Lumley played the Thirteenth Doctor in the 1999 Comic Relief spoof The Curse of Fatal Death, and Arabella Weir played the Doctor in the 2003 Big Finish audio drama Exile.[32] Spin-off media have also depicted more drastic regenerations than the TV series. For example, in the Big Finish Productions audio Circular Time, a Time Lord known as Cardinal Zero regenerates into an avian life-form after being poisoned.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Regeneration_(Doctor_Who)#Extent_of_physical_change
So clearly its very possible for a Time Lord to be a woman based on the history of the shows stories.

We call ourselves Doctor Who fans, yet since Sunday evening, the amount of hate towards each other's opinions on the new Doctor being female, has been shameful to say the least, does it really matter the new Doctor is female for the first time in 54 years, the bickering and name calling has to stop.
The Doctor is the Doctor no matter who plays the part. The fact other pages and groups are banning fans, just shows that unless we get behind Jodie Whittaker, the show we know and love could be a figure of hate, and not love. And I don't want that, yes I was unsure of Jodie becoming the new Doctor at first, but not anymore, let's give her our backing. Doctor Who is Doctor Who. No matter who plays the part of the Doctor.

Dry your eyes snowflake, as its nothing to do with the left or PC.
Its fictional and as seen based on the Time Lord being an alien, it can change into many forms.

Again a Time Lord can form into many different forms upon regeneration. All the evidence has been provided above and thus fail to see what the big deal is.
Its happened and nothing is going to change the fact this doctor is female. Now you can continue to piss and moan or get over it.

Call for the complete banning of women Time Lords being able to drive and own a Tardis.
Ban Time Lords from ever leaving Gallifrey.
Stop any aid to Earth.

Outlaw any Time Lord from regenerating into the form of an African and Asian human.
Shoot and destroy any refugee ships that get within a billion miles of Gallifrey.

I tend to agree with Tommy...Dr Who should be played by a male actor....just as James Bond should always be played by a white male actor.
Some characters... whether that's the way they are written as in the case of Bond, or just by the way they have always been known as...shouldn't be changed just for the sake of it.

James Bond isn't a science-fiction alien character though is he. Although still fictional, Bond has always existed in 'our world'. He has an established backstory that really only works if he is a white male. Being black would not make sense for Bond.
The Doctor is a regenerating alien, who, canonically, could regenerate with multiple heads, no arms, tentacles or indeed be a woman (just the The Master did).
'Should' is purely subjective in this case. Altering The Doctor's gender for one of his/her regeneration cycles alters nothing in the sci-fi universe the series takes place in.
I imagine the change is being done to 'do something different'. The series has not been as successful as it was in the first ten years following its 2005 return. Naturally the people behind the show want to keep it going but know something needs to keep people hooked rather than 'more of the same'. Having a female Doctor will probably alter the dynamics a little, especially in her interactions with other characters (male, female, villains etc). That will add a new dimension and keep things interesting. It isn't just 'for the sake of being PC', that is BS. It is a show that is loved trying to stay relevant and be 'new' in an increasingly competitive market.
And it DOESN'T break the universe's continuity.
Tommy would have had the same reaction if the Doctor had regenerated as a black man, Asian man, gay man or with a disability. He obviously has no real interest in the series whatsoever.

Syl wrote:I tend to agree with Tommy...Dr Who should be played by a male actor....just as James Bond should always be played by a white male actor.
Some characters... whether that's the way they are written as in the case of Bond, or just by the way they have always been known as...shouldn't be changed just for the sake of it.
Should?
Based on what exactly?
So you have no objection to a Time Lord, which can change into any life form on regeneration, as long as its male?
Again based on what exactly?
Victorian England mentality?
Dr Who was written as an alien that changes on regeneration. Previous information provided has shown that Time Lords can change into any form and that there is already other Time Lords that have regenerated as female and male.
So it changes with every regeneration, hence the silliness of your claim to what something should be with Dr Who.
So what you and Tommy thinks really does not matter on this.
The simple answer is that if you do not like it, then that is tough luck.
Nobody is forcing either of you to watch it.
Dr Who may lose a minor amount of fans who are dinosaurs, but will no doubt gain loads of new fans.

Really?

Re: Dr Who
He is a male in some generations and this time female. So just because he is in male form before, does not mean the Doctor cannot then take on a female form. as has happened now.
If you are going off where he was married to a wife, he now in this form could be married to a husband. Or even marry a female
Thanks Tommy that even more backs the view this alien can change into many forms
