Mom’s List Of Rules For Teenage Daughter Who Lives At Home Is Taking Facebook By Storm
Were your parents strict with you while you were growing up? Parents usually swing one way or the other on the discipline spectrum. Sometimes they are very strict while others are exceedingly lenient. Strict parents may raise children who follow the rules, but they could resent the parents. Lenient parents may be their kid’s best friend, but the child ends up entitled and spoiled. One mother from Australia’s Sunshine Coast has shared her “house rules” with the internet. Because her daughter is now eighteen, the Maroochydore mother expects certain things from her. But is the list too strict? Many people on the internet believe so.
The mother, who has wished to remain anonymous, shared her long list of house rules with the internet. Here is what she expects of her daughter:
Because the rules were shared online, many young people spoke out against the mom’s attempt at disciplining her child.
“I’m an 18 year old girl I would honestly hate my parents if they spoke to me like that,” wrote one commenter on Facebook.
Mom defended her house rules by telling the Sunshine Coast Daily that these rules came after numerous other things failed to work.
“We love our daughter to bits, but since she got her (driver’s) license, she has got worse and worse,” she said.
Mom said her daughter’s behavior deteriorated after she got her license.
“There is absolutely nothing wrong with our daughter having a social life, but she needs to respect the people she lives with.”
Read through the house rules again and see if you think they are too harsh for an 18-year-old girl. She is technically an adult and could be asked to contribute rent for staying in her parents’ home. Instead, she is given a curfew and asked to take out the trash.
Is the internet overreacting about these house rules? Did you have rules for your kid?

If you don't like it, move out. I have to say it's a bit Draconian, and I thought perhaps her daughter was a bit younger. But when you live at home, you shouldn't treat it as a hotel.

If I was the girl I would be looking round for a flatmate.
I think once a teen reaches 18 they should be treated more like an adult than a child you can dictate to.
My mum was never strict, we respected each other and worked together when I lived at home, that formed a lifelong bond....too strict parents can drive their kids away.

It's obvious that the girl was probably really lazy but I have to say, I'm pretty laid back and even if I made a set of rules like that....I'd probably forget I'd made them anyway.

I'm being too judgmental, I realize. But by 10 am half the day is gone.

Me too....I sometimes get a real spurt of energy in the early hours whilst others are sleeping, so I have no qualms about staying in bed till 10am....I actually think that's a very civilised time to get up.

Some of those "house rules" are certainly Draconian, however the power is all with the mother...
After all, the daughter is working -- and not paying for room and board ! -- if she were paying rent and helping with the housework (without being asked..) she might have more 'bargaining power'.

Fairly reasonable rules ......
EXCEPT for the ridiculous bit where she says if the daughter is out very late she should not come home ........ rather than arrive late and disrupt everyone's sleep. My God, that is so dangerous on so many levels. Does she really want her daughter to be at the mercy of any old rogue who is willing to give her a bed to crash for the night??
Mum doesn't want her sleep to be ''disturbed''? But ironically, if something serious ever happens to her daughter, mum will never get a full night's sleep again - and trust me you will soon get to know what REAL sleep deprivation is, lady!

My Daughter used to climb out of her Bedroom window around Midnight, slide down the drainpipe onto the shed and then jump to the ground on her way to a nightclub, she was 15.
I was going fishing one morning at 4am, driving down the road I saw her getting off the night service bus, I made her come with me as punishment.
She caught more fish than I did !
