NHS doctors and nurses to be offered '£950 spirituality lessons to improve their bedside manner'
NHS doctors and nurses are to be offered spirituality lessons in an attempt to give patients more compassionate care.
Staff will be able to qualify in the subject with a diploma approved by Government exams watchdog Ofqual.
The four-day training will teach healthcare professionals how to improve their bedside manner and encourage patients to have more meaningful lives.
Course leader William Bloom, who describes himself as a mind-body-spirit teacher, said: ‘The course has nothing to do with religion – it’s about showing people how to connect more with other human beings.’
GP Stuart Kempster says the course, which costs from £950 and will run this autumn at The Crossfields Institute, Stroud, has helped him enjoy a better relationship with his patients.
The retired 65-year-old said: ‘The training made me more open so patients were able to ask my advice about issues around spirituality, and it was comforting for those who were terminally ill.’
Chaplains are already accredited by the NHS to provide spiritual guidance to patients and staff.
NHS trusts have a duty under the Equality Act 2010 to be mindful of someone’s spiritual beliefs and identity.

You'd think those going into this profession would have compassion and spirituality in spades.
I think there should be anti-arrogance courses for consultants too.

£950? What a bloody rip off. Another silly fad by the sounds of it. Bedside manner etc should be taught when these nurses and doctors train, surely?

Like you can make someone more spiritual against their will! A spiritual journey is individual and takes as long as it takes for each person and each person has to want to wake up and get in touch with their spiritual self.
It's like someone has had an idea to "let's make everyone be really nice!"
What a load of cobblers.

LOL. My take on spirituality is to do with your inner being rather than the external influences of religion.

Agreed. If they can't do that, or get a bit jaded on the job, then courses in people management should be offered. You can't teach someone spirituality if they don't have it inside. It's something you need to embrace naturally not be 'taught'.
