A reporter for British newspaper the Guardian said Greg Gianforte, a Republican candidate in Montana for a seat in the House of Representatives, allegedly "body slammed" him in the midst of a taped interview on Wednesday, but the campaign disputed the version of events that led to the confrontation.

The alleged assault, which reporter Ben Jacobs claimed broke his glasses, came after Gianforte was asked about the Congressional Budget Office's score of the Republican health-care bill currently in Congress.

The incident occurred one day before voting in the special election to replace former Representative Ryan Zinke, who was selected by U.S. Fake President Trump to be Secretary of the Interior.

The contest, held in a state that Trump won in a lopsided vote, has been surprisingly close, becoming a referendum on Trump policies.

The Gallatin County Sheriff Brian Gootkin said in a statement that after completing an investigation, there was probable cause to issue a citation for misdemeanor assault as the injuries didn't meet the requirements for felony assault.

Gootkin said that Gianforte had received the citation on Wednesday evening and was scheduled to appear in court sometime before June 7.

Gootkin also noted that while he contributed $250 to Gianforte's campaign in March, it wasn't relevant to the investigation.

An unidentified person was taken to an area hospital, NBC News reported.

In the audio recording published by the Guardian, Gianforte can be heard telling Jacobs that he would talk with him later and to speak to his spokesperson. That is followed about one second later by what could be sounds of a struggle.

Gianforte can then be heard yelling, "I'm sick and tired of you guys. The last guy who came in here, you did the same thing. Get the hell out of here."

On the recording, Jacobs then states that Gianforte "body slammed me and broke my glasses."

Reporter asks Republican congressional candidate question about Obamacare repeal, Republican candidate body-slams reporter Empty Republican congressional candidate charged with misdemeanour assault of reporter over 'bodyslam' claim

Post by Guest Thu May 25, 2017 7:37 am

A Republican running for Congress in Montana was charged with misdemeanour assault on Wednesday night after witnesses told police Greg Gianforte grabbed a reporter by the neck and slammed him to the ground the night before polls close in the nationally-watched election. Brian Gootkin, sheriff of Gallatin County, made the announcement late on Wednesday in a statement posted to the county website.

Mr Gianforte would face a maximum $500 (£385) fine or six months in jail if convicted. The statement added that Guardian reporter Ben Jacobs's injuries did not meet the legal definition of felony assault.
The altercation between the Republican candidate and Jacobs allegedly took place at a campaign event at Mr Gianforte's headquarters in the city of Bozeman, Montana, the newspaper said.

Gianforte is the brownshirt encouraged by Trump at his rallies.  He is Nazi Germany, 1932.  He's not really angry at Ben Jacobs, but at himself for trying to cheat the public and not getting away with it.

The press is just out there.  It's a force, but it's an inevitable force.  The press is going to talk, and talking about his own inadequacies is what hurts Gianforte most of all.  He knows it...

Republicans love to lie.  It's a part of their strategy of cheating the public.  It's the larceny in the heart of every capitalist...no one gets rich, unless you make someone poor and take his share.  Every once in a while they even get close to legitimizing it...then they get caught, and their wet dream of putting one over gets smashed.

Gianforte is just angry that it didn't work this time...

I kind of hope he wins, he'd be such a huge headache for the Republicans.

Greg Gianforte, the Montana Republican candidate charged with assaulting a reporter, has not quite reached retirement age. But based on what he has said in the past, he might never stop working anyway.

In a 2015 talk at the Montana Bible College, Gianforte said the idea of retirement doesn’t exactly match his religious beliefs.

“There’s nothing in the Bible that talks about retirement. And yet it’s been an accepted concept in our culture today,” he said at the time, according to  a report in HuffPost. “Nowhere does it say, ‘Well, he was a good and faithful servant, so he went to the beach.’ It doesn’t say that anywhere.”

Look, this guy is clearly quite mad  - as in barking and foaming at the mouth.

But the maddest thing of all is him spouting "drain the swamp".
Do people still say that???  After everything?? Or are they too far removed from reality to realise how ironic that sounds.scratch

Montana is 2,000 miles from washington apparently.
It must be 2,000 years behind the times too.

Trump junr was at that meeting, and he was obnoxiously rude to the journalist also.

The poor man, he was just doing his job! He should come work in Britain. We have our faults but at least  Theresa May won't rugby tackle reporters just for asking her a  simple question.  Jeeez! Rolling Eyes
