Immigration Bill Amendment Would Strip British Terror Suspects Of Passport And Citizenship (POLL)

First topic message reminder :

British terror suspects could be stripped of their passports and citizenship following a last-minute change to the Immigration Bill by the Home Secretary. The new amendment, a sop to Tory backbenchers desperate for more punitive legislation, was tabled by Theresa May on Wednesday, and would allow for the removal of a UK passport for any suspect whose actions are deemed “seriously prejudicial to the vital interests of the UK”.

Under current legislation, the Home Secretary can already withdraw British citizenship from anyone with dual nationality, howe ver, the amendment would give May the power to make people stateless regardless of any naturalisation as a British citizen.

The move drew immediate condemnation, most notably from director of Liberty Shami Chakrabarti, who said: "Liberty always said that terror suspects should be charged and tried. First politicians avoided trials for foreign nationals; now they seek the same for their own citizens."

The campaigner added: "This move is as irresponsible as it is unjust. It would allow British Governments to dump dangerous people on the international community, but equally to punish potential innocent political dissenters without charge or trial. There is the edge of populist madness and then the abyss."

The Immigration Bill is scheduled to return to the Commons on Thursday evening, with May and David Cameron braced for a backbench revolt.

At the end of the day you if you grant someone citizenship they are a citizen period. You cant cherry pick parts of legislation and apply it to certain people on an ad-hoc basis when they commit a crime no matter how heinous. It just doesn't work like that and goes against every basic tenet of democracy. Doesn't matter if someone has dual nationality or not - taking that option away would not deter anyone from commiting a crime. Even if you required them to only have British citizenship, and they then commit a serious crime you treat them as anybody else.

Where the problem needs to be fixed is in the process of gaining citizenship - make It more thorough and do more background investigations and require more stringent tests before granting it.

I agree on your points but also feel we should be able to deport foreign criminals back after serving their time.
I can understand why this really annoys people and it also makes many decent foreign people the vast majority lumped under poor stereotypes.

I would love if it we had for new people coming the land contracts, of which citizenship is conditional. If we break the company rules with gross misconduct, what happens? You are more then likely to lose your job and the same principle could apply which would also be a very powerful deterrent in my view for foreigners to commit crimes,

^Didge and HF....hi....yes I understand what you are saying and, if during the process of becoming a citizen, they commit a serious crime then, yes off they go back to wherever.....make the process of granting residency and the citizenship longer and harder.

But if granted citizenship you cannot take it away because of crime....if so what do you with natural born citizens who commit crimes? Send them to outer space? Like I said once you are a citizen you have it for life or its up to the individual to renounce it. You cannot choose which rights will protect only a certain amount of people and which can be stripped away from others.
