An elementary school in Canada has canceled Mother's Day celebrations due to diversity, inclusivity, and so students without traditional families do not feel left out.
Roy Glebe posted a picture to Facebook of the letter his child was sent home with to publicly voice his concerns.

"Had to post this. I think disappointed is an understatement," Glebe wrote. "This will be the first year that we don't get gifts crafted with love from our kids, and since we only have one little one now it makes it all that much worse. I don't understand why we, as Canadians, need to give up our traditions that have been passed through generations. I welcome all races and ethnicities, but forcing us to give up things that are important to us as Canadians is crap. And it doesn't even have anything to do with religion? You can't celebrate your Mom and Dad?"

It's absolutely fucking ridiculous. Ive worked in schools and every adult knows the children and who lives with what adult - and we made the cards with them accordingly. So any child without a mother, for example, would be encouraged to make a card for their "special person".

This is rubbish. Schools have got round this relatively easily in the past and let's give teachers some credit for knowing their children and having enough sensibility and heart to make the right choices so no child is left out.

Jeez. It's just common sense and using the heart you were born with.

It's so that kids who don't have a mother or a father won't feel left out.

And so everyone else has to suffer?

Shall we stop all sports for school kids, because some cannot participate because of disabilities?

Like Eddie said you make them part of this by creating something also special for them and to make them feel as one with a family with their class and teacher. Or as Eddie said, someone else special.

Yes but they get to make cards for other "special people".
It's not fair to stop the whole school doing something special for their parent - because it will have to be the whole school - because one or maybe two pupils may not have a mother or father.

It won't stop at that either - it will be "let's not have thanksgiving celebrations so that we don't upset children who don't get a turkey."

You can keeo going and going. As a school governor I e heard them all. All the 'complaints' about every minor thing. You have to draw a line.

Schools have a strong inclusion policy. This covers everyone and sometimes "everyone" should mean everyone.

Well said, far better than I did.

My point was that this policy isn't "bonkers," it was based on logic. It's one alternative to having kids felt left out; edds suggested another (which I think sounds better, but I don't work at that school up in Canada and have no way of knowing the other factors that went into the decision).

No its bonkers, because children are being told they cannot express their love for their parents at school based on the supposed view this maybe insensitive to some children who do not have parents.
That is simple stupid.
What next, stop all exams, because some will fail and its insensitive that others will pass them?

Seriously Ben its absurd.

The reality is you are denying children things that are important and mean something

Its sad some children do not have parents, but to say it should not be embraced is just saying these children without. Should not then have or feel as if their grandparents, uncles, or who ever raises them is not as important and cannot be also thanked through these celebrations.

This is the kind of situation where we have to trust the people that choose to work with children - perhaps that's the best way of putting it. We've had children who's parents forget, or don't bother, when it's a 'dress-up day' so we think on our feet. We get them a costume and knock something together.

We can't simpy say we won't bother with dress-up day anymore because some parents (usually the same ones) don't care enough to remember.

Teachers and teachers assistants do a pretty good job at making sure all children feel pretty good about coming to school.

Idea

It's a bad and ill-thought through policy, Ben...

Rather than addressing diversity and encouraging acceptance of differences, this kind of nonsense only helps to aggravate people, stifle open discussions and individual expression, and will actually divide rather than unite people for the "cause" at the centre of this kerfuffle..

To put it another way --just WTF was that braindead teacher thinking of, to let a group of 6 -- 8 year old kids decide to follow her/his personal misbegotten p/c agenda, knowing the fuss they would create, and what was the school administration thinking of to give a minority-of-one (i.e. the teacher responsible..) a chance to upset the majority, in such a foolish way ?
