Teacher is fed up with kids’ attitude, begs parents to teach their kids these 3 things
(It's a story from last year but thought I'd share it)
Life for kids these days can be a constant string of sensory overload.
As parents, it makes sense that you want your children to have a head start in life by introducing them to productivity early. But one man’s post on Facebook is offering advice from a different perspective. That is, to teach them the valuable lessons that we often over look.
Jonas Harrysson has been a teacher for over 16 years. He’s seen it all at this point, but in the last five years or so, he’s noticed an alarming trend amongst students that enter his classroom. Their attitudes have changed. Jonas grew tired of breaking up fights after children refused to share toys and materials with their fellow peers. After trying to reprimand these students, he’s realized that this problem can only be solved at home by parents.
In a long Facebook post, Jonas let the world know his thoughts. He probably didn’t expect his Facebook post on things to teach your child to blow up the way it did. His original post in Swedish has been liked over 15,000 times, shared over 16,000 times, and he’s received over 800 comments. It’s even gone viral in other countries after being translated.
Jonas’s points make a lot of sense. Being able to provide a better life for our children is great, but it comes with a hidden consequence. Often times, our children don’t learn to appreciate what they have when we, as parents, give them the world. There needs to be a balance!
Kindness and compassion can be taught regardless of social status, heritage, or culture. These are basic principles for everyone to live by.

I have worked with kids for almost 16 years and there are a few things that I’ve noticed children are becoming worse and worse at.
Children find it very difficult to be bored! There constantly needs to be something going on. Please stop spoiling and servicing your children. It’s not dangerous for them to be bored sometimes.
I’ve met many parents who are soooo proud that their kids can read and count before starting preschool. Well, I hate to break it to you, but reading and counting, they’ll learn soon enough. Teach them instead to play, to be a good friend, and to share.”
My third point is that many children find it difficult to show gratitude to both other kids and adults. Can they get an “extra” one is unfortunately often a first question. “We only get one!?” is a common complaint I hear. What happened to PLEASE!? And thanks for dinner, and thanks for the ride, and so on?
I have no children yet, but if I do sometime in the future I will teach them to play, to be a good friend, to show gratitude and to be bored from time to time. When they learn those things, then will I teach them to read and count.

I agree with Jonas.
Learning to socialise and appreciate other people is as important as learning ABC and maths when young.
Once learned good manners and kind actions will stay with that child, obviously his/her own personality will develop but the basics will have been planted.
I cannot stand parents who don't teach their children the little things, like giving up their seat on public transport to an adult, saying please and thank you, and just being...nice...it's as important to teach these as the more obvious lessons imo.

Life experience, dealing with emotions, learning empathy and humanity, are the best tools you can teach a young child in my opinion.

Yes, and the best way to teach them is by example.
The boredom thing he touches on is interesting too
Kids do get bored sometimes....let them handle it. They have imaginations, let them use it rather than being entertained all the time.

Yes!! If any of my children say they're bored I'll give them a few suggestions and if that's not good enough my answer is
"Oh well. That's life. Find something to do"

My answer to a bored child....if it was raining and they were indoors....moaning....get the Lego out then.
I honestly found that toy to be a life saver because kids use their imagination and can make of it whatever they choose.
My son was hyperactive, today he would have been classed as ADHD but I am going back to the mid/late 70's when no one seemed to know much about the condition.
The only thing that would grab his interest for more than 5 minutes was Lego....he had every set going, and used to concentrate and make the most fabulous intricate things with it.
Imagination is a great thing in children....and it costs nothing.

Kids these days have too much. Too much TV. Too many computer games. Too much internet. Too much indulgence. Too much too soon and too many adult things in their lives. If they were using up more physical energy they might not feel so bored. They'd be too exhausted. Years ago we had no TV, let alone thinking our bums were too fat or that designer pair of trainers was the absolute must have. We just played out...for hours and hours and/or used our imaginations.
Yeah, I know. The world is a very different place from 40 years ago. That's the problem.

Why so you can whine about them kicking balls around the yard
By the same logic you should have been promoting Euthanasia of the women in the other thread
Those kids were some trying to play outside only to have their ball stolen.
I am Straight up calling out you Hypocrisy
The Problem is not the PlayStation, it is the selfish old people that prevent kids doing anything else

Lego has been ruined by Capitalism and movie tie ins, most of the pieces have become more specific it is getting close to making models.

I haven't bought any for years, but it would be sad to change the basic format of it.
My son had lots of star wars lego...he could make up the the Millennium falcon by following the instructions...then he could demolish it and make a million other things, he once made a fairground ride that spun round....very clever.
I think I trod on(with bare feet) hundreds of little grey lego bits in the star wars days.....but it was worth it.

Treading on a piece of Lego in bare feet is close to 10/10 for pain !
At least I thought it was till I stepped on an upturned electric plug.
