Kent Landlord Fergus Wilson Provokes Fury With ‘No Coloureds’ Diktat

One of Britain’s biggest buy-to-let landlords has said he does not want his houses rented to “coloured people because of the curry smell at the end of the tenancy”.

Fergus Wilson, 70, who owns around £250m worth of property across Kent, issued the written order to agents Evolution this week.

It was leaked to The Sun and when challenged over the diktat, Wilson told the paper: “To be honest, we’re getting overloaded with coloured people.”

Hope people boycott renting his properties for such prejudice views. Though sadly this ould effect the letting agents.
He even calls for female victims of Domestic violence to be barred.

Why didn't he just say that making curry in his property was forbidden? The smell of curry does linger, but does it sort of attach itself to walls and soft furnishings for a long time? The smell of some microwave meals tends to linger as well, but that usually goes away.

Have you seen his list of people who can't rent his properties? He banned plumbers - I'm a bit intrigued about that one.

What about white people who cook curry.  Most of us do.

I dunno about "most". A lot of them probably buy Uncle Ben's sauce and shove it over some chicken and call it curry, or get a takeway.

I used to live next door to some people who were always making curry, so the back yard smelt of it a lot of the time. I always hoped they'd invite us round for a curry, but they never did.

The mum next door who is Indian often has a curry on the go. I love the smell which can drift round the garden in the summer, it gets spicier as the day wears on, presumably she adds more herbs and spices, my OH hates the smell.

I think cooking fish smells more, and the smell lingers longer.

This landlord sounds horrible....I'm surprised he lets his property out to anyone he is so judgmental.

The trouble is that a lot of things smell nice when they're cooking, but not later on.

I like cabbage but that lingers as well.

This man is clearly thinking of the cost of sorting out any problems once tenants have left or problems which occur when they're living there. He's claiming that curry smells don't just linger for a while, they actually gets into the carpets. I don't know if that's true because I don't really cook curry.

Apparently, he doesn't object to black people, presumably because he thinks they  don't cook curry.  

The benefits issue is a common one - issues with paying the rent I guess.

Low-paid workers - ditto, although I'm not sure he has the right to ask people how much they earn.

Smokers and pets - another common one.

No single adults? Hmmm, not sure about that one. Maybe he thinks they're all up to no good.  

No tenants with children under 18? He's perhaps thinking of the damage that children can do?

Battered wives? He's maybe thinking that husbands might turn up and cause a scene?

I'm a bit stuck on the no plumbers bit though.

No plumbers is the oddest one....maybe he waited in all day for one and they didn't show, that can be pretty annoying.

If someone is paying rent I don't see how you can dictate what they can and cant cook.

Many rental places have the 'No pets' rule....not sure about the No smoking rule, again, if people are paying rent I don't think anyone can tell them not to smoke in it.

No 'coloureds'...does that depend on the shade of brown? many black people cook curry too, though I doubt its the curry that he's bothering about anyway, that's just an excuse to mask his discrimination.

Maybe he should cut to the chase and just say "Only White, married, middle class, childless, petless none smoking  couples who eat out a lot and don't cook need apply.
