A new vaccine-based treatment for HIV has succeeded in suppressing the virus in five patients, raising hopes further research could help prevent Aids without the need for daily drugs. Researchers combined two innovative HIV vaccines with a drug usually used to treat cancer in the trial, conducted over three years at the IrsiCaixa Aids Research Institute in BarcelonaAfter receiving the treatment, the virus was undetectable in five out of 24 participants and its spread was stopped by their immune systems, reported the New Scientist. One of them has been drug-free for seven months.

It's interesting that a cancer drug was used - when HIV first broke out, it was thought to be a cancer. It was actually called falsely and nastily, "gay cancer".

This is great news.

This idea of flushing the virus out of hiding is an interesting one. After the initial immune response, it's thought that's how the virus manages to escape destruction - by hiding.

I noticed in the comments section of the Independent article that someone described AIDS as "Auto Immune Deficiency Syndrome" rather than "Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome".

Yes, I have read about the virus 'hiding', and the theory that it needed to be 'flushed out' into the open so it could be effectively destroyed.

The low success rate is disappointing... only 5 out of 24... but this is still a big success!
