Already have -- it's because in the mid-2000s, Sweden passed some of the most expansive and detailed rape and sexual assault laws in the world, which categorized many more acts as rape than were classed before and naturally caused the statistics to spike. And you already know that.

In 2015 there were 18,100 sex offences reported to police - an 11% decrease compared to 2014.
Of these, 5,920 were classified as rape. Per capita that equates to 60 cases per 100,000.
In comparison, per capita there were 100 reports of rape per 100,000 people in the UK between April 2015 and March 2016, according to the Office for National Statistics.

The proper question should be "Does Sweden have one of the highest number of rapes in the world PER CAPITA?" In other words, the number of reported rapes per head of population, as comparing absolute numbers of rapes between countries with vastly different sized populations would be meaningless. (One of the replies below tries to make this argument.)

The answer to the question in terms of reported rapes per head of population is yes, Sweden does, and while this information is not published much by mainstream media because it is so politically sensitive, it has been widely reported in publications like FrontPage (January 29th 2013). "Sweden now has the second highest number of rapes in the world, after South Africa, which at 53.2 per 100,000 is six times higher than the United States"

In absolute terms, the Guardian reported in January 2016 " The raw figures suggest a huge rise in reports, from 1,707 in 1995 to 6,697 in 2014".

In fact, going further back in the past to 1975, the total number of reported rapes was just 421. Of course, the Guardian being the Guardian it was necessary to put a “xenophobe” spin on a story about the cover-up of widespread sexual assaults and rape by MENA immigrant gangs on Swedish teenage girls at a Stockholm music festival in 2014. “This cover-up of sex assaults in Sweden is a gift for xenophobes | Andrew Brown” And yet, it is significant that even a progressive left newspaper is finally admitting such facts.

That is a 1490% increase from 1975 to 2014, and the population increased by just 19%.

So, what caused the massive increase in rapes in probably the most progressive liberal country in the world, where respect for women is so revered? Canada's Globe & Mail (equivalent to UK's The Times and similarly considered a newspaper of record) in an article entitle "Sweden's ugly immigration problem" published 11 Sep 2015, wrote:

There has been a massive increase in immigration of refugees from countries in the Middle East and north Africa (MENA) from countries where women are subjugated and hidden away, and when they do go out, are normally covered head to foot in coverings to prevent them from being seen, even enforced by the brutal religious police in some of those countries. Such cultures consider women wearing short skirts, tight trousers, tops revealing shoulders as women of easy virtue (to put it diplomatically). Even wearing perfume is considered so. Many men from such countries have limited respect for such women and especially so if they are non-believers.

The Globe & Mail article quotes an expert on immigration issues in Sweden - an Iranian born immigrant with Swedish nationality and a doctorate in economics from Chicago university, a Dr Tino Sanandaji:

“In Sweden, where equality is revered, inequality is now entrenched. Forty-two per cent of the long-term unemployed are immigrants ... Fifty-eight per cent of welfare payments go to immigrants. The majority of people charged with murder, rape and robbery are either first- or second-generation immigrants.”

Since I wrote this Quora answer, the economist Dr Sanandaji has published a book on immigration with the title “Mass Challenge”. Libraries in Sweden have refused to order it, saying it is “contrary to human rights”, even though it is a factual book based on statistics from Bra. The liberal press such as the BBC and the Guardian try to argue that there are other factors to explain the 1490% increase in rapes in Sweden which occurred as MENA immigration to Sweden grew higher than any other country in the EU per head. Immigration from MENA countries is just a coincidence; after all, all men are potential rapists, and Swedish men rape too, they claim.

Why not check the Swedish Police statistics for reported rapes and rape convictions, I hear you ask? The answer to that is Sweden introduced a new law to make it a criminal offence to publish crime statistics by ethnicity. One would imagine that given Sweden’s ultra progressive society, it would want to be more transparent about such statistics, not hide them so effectively and so powerfully as to create a new law making it a criminal offence to collect or report such statistics. What is Sweden hiding? However, before the law came into effect the last such statistics were reported and the following was mentioned in an article in the Times about the Cologne mass rapes and sexual assaults on New Years Eve: "Let's be honest about these immigrant attacks" published 8 Jan 2016:

"A 2002 survey by Karlstad University found that 85 per cent of those sentenced to at least two years in prison for rape were foreign born or second-generation immigrants. Returning to the UK, liberal media such as the BBC and the Guardian claim there are other reasons why the incidence of rape has increased. Now remember the increase has not been 20% or 40% or even 100%, or even 300%. No, it has been a mind boggling 1490%. Bear that in mind when you consider the likelihood of the following factors they suggest as being a likely cause, even considered in unison.

“The definition of rape has widened in Sweden.” You'll note they rarely explain in what way the definition has been widened, because these are subtle changes that would be most unlikely to result in even a small increase in reported rapes, in large part because people's understanding of rape does not change with a change in the law - it stays the same. There have been changes in the definition of rape in many other countries, but it is rarely used to explain away an enormous increase in rapes over three decades. The UK saw a widening of the definition of rape with the 2003 Sexual Offences Act. This widening of the definition of rape in the U.K. was explained by former female barrister specialising in rape cases, Laura Perrin, in this article Did you know the legal definition of rape and 'consent' is changing? Here's how The criminal barrister concludes with the words “ if you have a date coming up you might want to consult a lawyer.” The main change in the Swedish rape law was including penetration by a digit (fingers) as to be included in the definition of rape. A rational explanation of this would be “in 200X, part of the increase may have been due to …” This is never proffered by the snipers.

None of this can explain:

a) why official Swedish statistics on rape by ethnicity, before such statistics were made a criminal offence by the Swedish government, showed that immigrants in Sweden from north Africa were 23 times more likely to commit rape than Swedish men.

b) Why in Norway, neighbouring Scandinavian country with similar laws on rape and many similarities in culture, that Norway’s largest city and capital, Oslo, the police chief confirmed that in the 3 years 2009 - 2012, there were 48 rapes and every single one of them was described “non-western immigrant”. c) Why in in 2015, when Sweden accepted even more migrants per capita from mostly MENA countries during the migrant crisis than even Germany, the increase in reported sexual assaults in one year was an astounding 70%.

I find it quite disturbing that UK tax payer funded institutions such as the BBC would grasp at straws trying to deny what is obvious to everyone and his dog. Sadly, some people read such articles and believe them, and then disseminate them on social media, and rather naive gullible people are taken in.

Note: The number of reported rapes in England & Wales was 24,023 (ONS data reported in the Guardian 22 Jan 2015 ) The 85,000 stated by another contributor is reported rapes multiplied by an estimated factor as a guess for the total number of rapes, and is not reported rapes. This is a common mistake.

Sweden, the story goes, used to be very peaceful, very safe, very blond. Then it started letting in darker-skinned people. Soon there were news reports of attacks on Swedes. Now, Sweden records the highest incidence of rape in the world.
The Sweden story has become absolutely viral. You’ve probably read a version in a Facebook post, or heard it in a speech or debate. It is the argument-ender of the intolerant: To make the case against refugees, or immigration, or “Islam,” you recount a couple of stories about refugee-camp horrors, some random anecdotes of sex crimes involving brown people in various countries, and then drop the Sweden story.
Behind it you’ll find the resurrection of an old, deadly appeal to fear – that people of certain skin colours are natural-born predators who threaten white women. It’s a version of lynch-mob logic that happens to appeal to the liberal and tolerant as much as the hateful and intolerant.

And it falls apart as soon as you speak to anyone knowledgeable in Sweden.
“What we’re hearing is a very, very extreme exaggeration based on a few isolated events, and the claim that it’s related to immigration is more or less not true at all,” says Jerzy Sarnecki, a criminologist at Stockholm University who has devoted his career to the study of criminality, ethnicity and age.
Sweden does indeed have far more reported cases of sexual assault than any other country. But it’s not because Swedes – of any colour – are very criminal. It’s because they’re very feminist. In 2005, Sweden’s Social Democratic government introduced a new sex-crime law with the world’s most expansive definition of rape.
Imagine, for example, if your boss rubbed against you in an unwanted way at work once a week for a year. In Canada, this would potentially be a case of sexual assault. Under Germany’s more limited laws, it would be zero cases. In Sweden, it would be tallied as 52 separate cases of rape. If you engaged in a half-dozen sex acts with your spouse, then later you felt you had not given consent, in Sweden that would be classified as six cases of rape.
The marked increase in rape cases during the 2000s is almost entirely a reflection of Sweden’s deep public interest in sexual equality and the rights of women, not of attacks by newcomers.
But aren’t refugees and immigrants responsible for a greater share of Sweden’s sexual assaults?
In a sense. Statistics show that the foreign-born in Sweden, as in most European countries, do have a higher rate of criminal charges than the native-born, in everything from shoplifting to murder (though not enough to affect the crime rate by more than a tiny margin). Why the difference? Because people who go to Sweden are poorer, and crime rates are mostly a product not of ethnicity but of class. In a 2013 analysis of 63,000 Swedish residents, Prof. Sarnecki and his colleagues found that 75 per cent of the difference in foreign-born crime is accounted for by income and neighbourhood, both indicators of poverty. Among the Swedish-born children of immigrants, the crime rate falls in half (and is almost entirely concentrated in lesser property crimes) and is 100-per-cent attributable to class – they are no more likely to commit crimes, including rape, than ethnic Swedes of the same family income.
What also stands out is that almost all the victims of these crimes – especially sex crimes – are also foreign-born. But for a handful of headline-grabbing atrocities, it isn’t a case of swarthy men preying on white women, but of Sweden’s system turning refugees into victims of crime.
That is the real Swedish crisis. Refugee shelters are terrible, dangerous places, whoever is in them. When such shelters, then known as displaced persons camps, held millions of Europeans in the 1940s and 1950s, histories show they were at risk of sexual predation and organized attacks against Jewish refugees.
Because otherwise generous Sweden doesn’t allow refugees to seek work until they know the language, tens of thousands of people are stuck in these awful places, in similar conditions, or in welfare-dependent netherworlds.
There they become victims of violent crime, victims of economic exclusion and victims of a grotesque, viral story that portrays them as predators, entirely because of their skin colour.
