First topic message reminder :

This blog is an unedited version of a speech, which will be delivered by Joan Pons Laplana, on Monday. He will be speaking at a One Day Without Us event organised with Unison.

I came to the UK 17 years ago to pursue my dream of becoming a nurse. I landed in Luton on bonfire night with just £50 in my pocket and a suitcase full of hope. I have worked hard for the NHS ever since.

I am one of the three million EU citizens who live in this country but I feel that the government is treating us as a commodity at the Brexit table.

I love England and I have raised my family here. My kids are British. I have never had any problem or felt discriminated against, but since Brexit, I’ve started to feel like a second class citizen just because of my accent. I have been attacked on social media and what makes me even more angry is that my kids are being affected.

A year ago my 14 years old son asked me if I was going to be forced to go back to Spain if Brexit goes ahead and a year on I still have no answer. My daughter, aged 11, came home crying from school the other day and when I asked her why she told me that another child told her that I was not welcome in the UK and that I would be thrown out very soon. My daughter was heartbroken and asked me if that was true. I could not in all honesty say no!

Is it right that my daughter doesn’t want to go on holidays to Spain this year to see her grandparents because she fears I will not be able to come back?

Brexit is not only affecting nurses already here. Applications from EU nurses wanting to come here have plummeted by 90%. The UK is no longer the first choice for EU nurses looking for a job. Also many of my colleagues who have been here less than five years are starting to leave because of the uncertain future.

I know that NHS England has told us not to panic, but for how long must our lives and futures be on hold? The current situation is unacceptable. We are people with feelings not ‘negotiating capital’. The UK is our home and the government must guarantee the rights of EU nationals in the UK immediately and not, as has been hinted, at some distant point in the future.

Vague assurances are not enough. Our lives have been put in limbo since Brexit. We are facing an uncertain and bleak future in the wake of the referendum result and the anguish and ongoing stress that this is causing to individuals and families is immense.

We came to the UK in good faith and we have made our home and our lives here. We contribute on every level and in every sector of British society. Many EU nationals are already severely affected by the current Home Office stance and families are being torn apart.

When this country is so short of nurses we cannot afford to put people off in this way. 17 years ago, I was warmly invited to build my life here. I was told it was my home from home. I was told I could settle down, marry a Brit and make my life here. Yet today I am told I’m a foreigner and should go back where I come from. Things are getting so bad that many of my fellow EU citizens hardly dare to speak their own language on the streets for fear of being insulted or attacked. Our very own identity is being challenged, our future, our life. Diversity is what makes a society prosper. I was born in Spain but lived most of my adulthood life in Britain.

I am British! Diversity is what made Britain so special, what has made Britain great: its soft power, a mixture of charm, tolerance, creative spirit and openness. Immigrants are not the problem, Xenophobia is. We need to stop this madness. As Jo Cox once said we have more things in common.

Oh come off it Dibs, the victim card does not work here.
You can have valid points, but presenting a claim trying to down play how EU migrants feel based off your hearsay claim, off a guilt by association is simply a fallacy argument.
Like I said, also, glad your dad is on the mend.

Its not a victim card its what happens two members have noticed it . Anyway I've said i even asked my mum's neighbour and he and his family don't feel unwelcome . I would imagine being Muslim they would know if they were not wanted given the amount of crap some Muslims live with .

It is the victim card being played as both you and rags, seem to think you should be protected from criticism.
Well lets look at the situation here
You are not a migrant and yet the writer of the article is a migrant
Also the recent figures of migrations have shown for the first time thousands of Eastern Europeans leaving.
Which clearly adds far more weight to the article than your hearsay

"The ONS said there had been a statistically significant increase in emigration by citizens from the so-called EU8 countries -- Czech Republic, Estonia, Hungary, Latvia, Lithuania, Poland, Slovakia and Slovenia -- up 12,000 to 39,000."

What a bizzare thing to say on a forum. Shocked You profess to know how all these coloured people feel??? How do you know?

1.Are you the union leader of nurses and midwives? - the official representative whom they all go to with their problems?
2. Or do you socialise with these people, go out drinking and dining with them on nights out - cos only in that relaxed atmosphere will they let it be known what is truly in their hearts.
3. Or do you have one of those kindly, approachable faces which makes even complete strangers run up to you and tell you all their problems?
4. Or are you simply psychic?

You assume that all foreign people are "coloured"? Anyway, it's a bit unPC to call people "coloured" these days.

You're right on both counts. But at the end of the day, I am a leftie and you are a rightie, so there is very little you can teach me about political correctness. Let's leave it there.

Our church is full of black white congregation - most of them are doctors nurses . None of them feel unwelcome since the Brexit vote . For two nights my dad has been in intensive care he has got septicemia Sad . Most of the nurses are immigrants some are black and white , I never saw any indication that they feel unwelcome nor did i see any patients or other staff members ( British) ever show any sign that they didn't want them there . Everyone was fantastic getting on with their jobs giving my dad the most wonderful professional care ever .

We were basically told he wouldn't make it through but he has he was sat up last night talking to us better than he has in months, he has responded to medication and things are looking brighter . But there is a long road ahead for us .

I'm sorry to hear your dad is poorly vod, I wish him a speedy recovery. It's horrible when a parent is ill in hospital, but it sounds like he is getting the best of care.

I knew what you meant in your first post, you were talking of your experiences with the foreign people you know.
Everyone has different experiences, and like you mentioned, the area where you live could have something to do with how people treat each other.

Clearly, that's not the case. I wouldn't say I was particular right wing, and I don't know why you assume that lefties have a monopoly on knowing what's PC and what is not.

''Clearly'' nothing. Let me try and make this as brief as possible.

I have been corrected a couple of times in previous years for saying ''coloured'' anyway. And even without being corrected I already knew it was a slightly off thing to say. But I still occasionally say it purely as a short cut. Ditto the coloured/foreign issue - the two words are far from synonymous, I already knew that.
You've taught me nowt. Teaching someone something implies they did not know that thing, previously.

It's not just a question of how RW you are. It's who you defend.  You do seem to spend an inordinate amount of time defending extreme rightwingers.

Eg, some people on here drool nauseatingly all over Trump as if he's some wonderful latter day messiah and you vigorously defend such people. The drooling isn't pretty to watch. But you defending the droolers is amusing to see lol.

It's spooky that a red streak appeared right in front of my eyes as I was looking at that last post. I saw it as the person was actually giving it to me.

Only 3 people were online at the time so it was obvious who the giver was. One day technology will be available that will retrospectively reveal who secretly gives these red marks to who.

The sneakiness of it  always makes me think of some old guy leaning sideways and  secretly pushing out a silent-but-deadly fart. It won't  stop me posting my opinions. You can give me 8 reds for each post in this thread if you like - whatever! - anything to get you thru the night. Wink Wink Wink

I only defend them against the abuse that they get here. I analyse situations, and I sort out the bullshit from what really matters. It's amusing to see you trying to tell everyone how to think and feel, and it's amusing to see you drooling over anyone who you think will back you up.

No, your ice cold heart does not give a shite about people being abused.
Unless they are the sort of people who kneel & pray at the alter of alt-right.
A woman spoke abusively to me on here and you parachuted into the thread to say you found the abuse amusing and that it made you laugh.

Exactly , I really do think its to make leave voters feel guilty and made to feel racist - my main reason for voting to leave was because i want our country back to rule itself .

Ah, so more hearsay, from two people very much in support of Brexit.

Which kind of leaves doubt to the validity of the claims made above

What is clear and is evident, is there has been a sharp rise of Eastern Europeans leaving since the referendum.

Which adds weight to the article.

Lol. /\

I have been given red stripes for the most inoffensive posts.....I don't really get that mentality.

I sort of wish the name of the poster who is dishing them out would appear alongside it, same with the green stripes and the Thanks.

I usually don't announce if I had given a  alien ....I sometimes announce when I have given a RED
just so no one else gets the credit. Razz

Which woman, and which thread? I expect you were being bossy and abusive yourself.

You do tell people what to think, and you also tell them what they should be talking about on the forum.

I think you must have an ice-cold heart - you often overlook the awful abuse thrown at some allegedly "right wing" people on here, and you don't even bat an eyelid. If it's one of your leftie mates getting upset about nothing though, you're straight in there to suck up to them and soothe their fevered brow.

Cool - but it has nothing to do with the Brexit vote . Maybe the money has dried up now with the new benefits cap .

Re:  Reds and Greens, on otherwise innocent and innocuous threads...

I have noticed that sometimes these stripes can be 'given' accidentally when using a tablet (or smartphone..) by brushing the '+'  or  '-' when scrolling up or down..

So,  sometimes that stripe, against an innocent post, may in itself be an innocent mistake ?
And maybe even, sometimes the person giving that red remains unaware, theirself..

I think, also, people give pluses and minuses on other threads than the one they want to reward. When you visit you can only record one at a time (per hour or something), so people will save it and float around and see where they want to red or green someone.

After a visit, it seems some people don't want to waste time going back to the precise post, so they just find a post of the person and deliver it there. You don't notice this until you go way back on a thread and observe pluses and minuses that weren't there before.

Don't waste your time trolling me. Go troll those who give a shit. You've no idea how foolish I feel, saying earlier that I thought you were ok. You're not, you're a nasty little troll who goes miles out of your way to annoy and irritate. I don't say this because of your political opinions, I say this because of your haraunging style.

I was shocked when I read you were banned once. I thought ''why would such a harmless person ever get banned''. Now I can see exactly the reason why. You light the torch then you stand back and watch the fallout. You go the extra mile to make trouble.

Ragga will obviously come sprinting over, cos that is what she does every single time someone even dares to look at you the wrong way, let alone challenge your views. Save it Ragga, put your orgasm away. I don't want to know. Your protegee is a nasty lil attention-seeking troll & there's an end to it.

Jules, how many of Vods posts are haranguing, please? Any more than anyone else on here?  Can you explain how she's trolling you?

You've changed your mind rather quickly, rather harshly and, I feel, without justification. It's okay if you dislike her now due to what you've heard on the grapevine, but don't pretend it's about what has happened on here. There's no evidence of trolling or of her haranguing you.

Cool - but it has nothing to do with the Brexit vote . Maybe the money has dried up now with the new benefits cap .

It certainly does.

EU citizens in UK fear for jobs ahead of Brexit talks
A fifth of those polled in FT survey plan to leave in next 2 years

This was back in October and low and behold, there has been a huge surge of Eastern European migrants leaving since the vote.

The figures show that UK net migration fell 18 per cent to 273,000 in the first full quarter following the Brexit vote, the lowest level in more than two years. This was partly driven by a rise in emigration as Poles and other east Europeans left Britain.

Now if you and Horatio really were being honest here. I its clear at least some of those you claim to know would feel the climate of fear.. Especially those who have stated back in October they would leave and have left..

Hence why two Brexit supporters make a claim around EU migrants. Which conflicts with the known view of a substantial number of EU migrants, that do feel that way. You can summarize, you are not motivated by Honesty on this issue, but your support of Brexit. Your emotional support, is blinding you both to honesty here, as if everyone is behind the Brexit move and its all smelling of roses.

Hence its not difficult to unravel whether a hearsay claim, lacks validity, based on the motivation behind this. Why else would you both claim you both know people. On a thread which shows  fear and anxiety from EU migrants? Is done in order to downplay and brush under the carpet these concerns. You are basically trying to deligitimise the claim in the article. When in reality, based on the evidence, you would at least know some that  would show concerns and fears. Based on a high probability chance of meeting some. Either you simple only know a couple of EU migrants or you do know at least 20+ EU migrants and you are not being honest about those who do have fears and anxieties since Brexit. Its simple maths, based on probability.

I was actually at work when you posted this little rant, so I couldn't come sprinting over. However, as you've dragged me into it, I'll reply. First of all, you should stop being so vulgar and disgusting, and secondly, your attack on Vod was out of order. You have no idea why she was banned, and it's not your business. She supports Trump, and you attacked her indirectly for doing so, so she's entitled to reply. She didn't criticise you, but you ranted and raved at her - that puts you in the wrong.

Yep!

And while it has also been claimed that none of us Brits know any/enough eu immigrants to be able to offer any valid opinion...

Suggesting that only this op person knows all of them, or enough of them to be in a position to speak for them all...!?

But the lefties always tell us how much all these immigrants 'integrate' and are such an integral part of our society...!?

Maybe this op person just knows all the eu immigrants who don't 'integrate' and who live here choosing to only mix with others of their foreign country of origin...!?

I posted up reason, which has shown you do not like your claims to be challenged.
My reasoning has left you acting childishly.
What it shows is you cannot take constructive criticism.
As seen you and others entered this thread to attempt to poor and disingenuously down play the article of this thread, based clearly on poor claims.
Its evident that a number of EU migrants feel fear and anxiety after Brexit.
