Iraq human rights lawyer accused of hounding British troops 'thought he was above the rules'
A lawyer accused of hounding British troops with baseless allegations of torture and abuses in Iraq thought he was above the rules and the ends justified his means, a disciplinary hearing has been told.
Phil Shiner made a series of “fundamental and basic failings” when he brought some of the most serious accusations of abuses faced by British troops since the Second World War.
The allegations of murder, mutilation and torture against Iraqi civilians led to a five-year-long, £25m public inquiry with scores of troops made to testify.
But the claims proved to be based on “deliberate and calculated lies” from Iraqis, while many of the innocent troops wrongly accused found the process exacerbated their mental problems stemming from the war.

A human rights lawyer who pursued a decade-long “witch hunt” against innocent British soldiers was last night facing calls to be prosecuted after he was struck off.
Phil Shiner was described as a “modern-day traitor” after a tribunal found he acted dishonestly, recklessly and without integrity while bringing false allegations of murder, torture and mistreatment against hundreds of soldiers.
The National Crime Agency is now investigating after the Legal Aid Agency (LAA) passed a file to them for a possible prosecution.
The LAA said last night that it was also looking at recovering £3 million of funds it gave to his firm, Public Interest Lawyers, over a decade.
Sir Michael Fallon, the Defence Secretary, demanded Mr Shiner apologise for making soldiers’ lives a misery.

Lets hope they do prosecute him

The arrogantly amoral and puerile behaviour by that Iraqi "human rights" lawyer reminds me of the behaviour seen down here from some of the more maverick criminal defense lawyers...
Where they make the most outrageous and indefensible accusations against innocent people..
And then defend their own odious actions by claiming that their own clients "deserve the best and most robust defence that the lawyers can provide.." -- never worrying about how many lives they ruin, innocent reputations they trash, or how much public money is wasted, during that process.
