This Fine-Dining Restaurant Has Hired Over 200 Former Criminals. None Have Re-Offended
A fine dining restaurant in Cleveland, OH, is all about giving people second chances.
Edwins, a French restaurant that opened in 2013, is believed to be the only upscale restaurant in the U.S. where ex-offenders make up a majority of the staff. More than 200 ex-convicts have gone through a six-month rotation at Edwins and not one has re-offended - with 90% of them gaining permanent employment.
Restaurant owner Brandon Chrostowski says he wants to give former criminals a second chance at life.
"I was a reckless teenager, and one night, I was arrested and thrown in jail," said Chrostowski. "Fortunately, I had a judge who gave me a break instead of 10 years in prison. While I was on probation, I met a chef who mentored me - and once I was in the kitchen, I knew that's where I belonged for the rest of my life."
Edwins provides 40-50 hours of training each week for six months. The "students" receive a weekly payment, as well as tips from diners. Going even further, Chrostowski launched a dormitory for his employees when he noticed that not having decent, affordable housing in the area kept many of his students from acheiving stability.
"Edwins is a family. There's a spirit here where we're in this together. To have a second chance is to have a new life. And if you're ready to work hard, you can change the stars."

Good for him, what a lovely generous person he is.
I think one of the main problems with ex offenders is they have no permanent address....many employers wont employ people if they are not settled. This man not only offers work and training, he also provides accommodation.

Those are some of the main issues. They are never given a chance in many cases.
Others though are and throw their chances away also
Its great to see people reaching out to help, as they he has done

What a great idea. Hopefully more people will see that this type of thing pays off for everyone involved.

Yes, we have a couple of those around San Francisco. One is Delancy Street out by Mission Bay.

Quill does that restaurant get busy? I can imagine some people, maybe the elderly, would be worried about dining there, perhaps.

One of the most popular places in SF. If the cons have a job and a home, they are just like anyone else...stable and quite civil.
And these are real good cooks and wait staff, in one of the greatest eating cities on earth. Competition is high and they know it. They are not about to screw up.
Plus, these are some high rent places, right down the street from some $1-million apartments. Pretty safe neighborhood.

I love the look of that Delancey street restaurant....is there anything better than to eat Al fresco looking out at the water?

I think it's lovely that these people have turned their lives around and not slipped back to the really easy way of living for them, the temptations of making easy money from stealing and selling drugs, and instead, have got themselves a vocation.
Nice. I'd eat there definitely.

We have many of those wharf restaurants here in SF and neighboring bay-front cities. When I lived in New York City there were some good seafood restaurants--Sweets, the Fulton Fish Market, Sloppy Jo's for lunch--but they were always in cramped rooms on the second floor.

Both Wolf and Veya have told me to visit if I come out their way.
I am sure Quill would offer to do the same
