Shami's £500,000 to help girls get degrees - despite them already doing better than boys at university...
Baroness Shami Chakrabarti has set up a £500,000 bursary at Essex University
She said initiative would close ‘education gender gap’ and end ‘gender injustice’
Although official figures show white working-class boys are the most disadvantaged group!
Shami Chakrabarti was accused of hypocrisy last night after launching a women-only degree fund – despite girls doing better than boys at university.
The baroness, who was handed a peerage by Jeremy Corbyn last year, established the £500,000 bursary at Essex University, where she is chancellor – and where there are already more female students than male.

All in the name of 'equality'...!?
Really...!!!???
The evidence clearly shows that white boys from less well off backgrounds are by far the under represented group in higher education... so why not try to help them...!?
Or would it only be sexist/racist when white males are given help when not equally represented in numbers reflecting wider population and to be inclusive for reasons of equality and diversity etc...!?

Actually when I was in education it was lower-class, white boys born in summer _ in other words the youngest in the class - I don't think that should be left out of the equation. Just saying.

You know what, Tommy? I totally agree with you. Help the group that is struggling the most -- working-class whites often get overlooked because so many people assume white means rich.

Is this sort of thing the point at which "positive discrimination" becomes mere discrimination, and looses all "positivity"?

Oh, and I'm not the only lefty who feels this way:

Eastern Kentucky and other areas of Appalachia hit hard by a sharp drop in coal jobs would share in a $1 billion lifeline under the budget proposal put forth Monday by President Barack Obama, though the budget faces difficult prospects in Congress (note from Ben -- it was controlled by the Republicans at the time).
The budget includes a proposal to release $1 billion from the federal abandoned mine land fund over five years for reclamation projects that could improve the economy of distressed coal communities.
Though details are still to be worked out, distribution of the money would be based on factors such as unemployment rates and the potential to link reclamation of land and polluted water to job-creating strategies, according to the White House.

Wikipedia wrote:An estimated 90%[41] of Appalachia's earliest European settlers originated from the Anglo-Scottish border country—namely the English counties of Cumberland, Westmorland, Northumberland, County Durham, Lancashire and Yorkshire, and the Lowland Scottish counties of Ayrshire, Dumfriesshire, Roxburghshire, Berwickshire and Wigtownshire.
Most of these were from families who had been resettled in the Ulster Plantation in northern Ireland in the 17th century,[42] but some came directly from the Anglo-Scottish border region.[43] In America, these people are often grouped under the single name "Scotch-Irish" or "Scots-Irish". While various 20th century writers tried to associate Appalachia with Scottish highlanders, Highland Scots were a relatively insignificant percentage of the region's early European immigrants.[43]
Germans were a major pioneer group to migrate to Appalachia, settling mainly in western Pennsylvania and Southwest Virginia. Smaller numbers of Germans were also among the initial wave of migrants to the southern mountains.[16] In the 19th century, Welsh immigrants were brought into the region for their mining and metallurgical expertise, and by 1900 over 100,000 Welsh immigrants were living in western Pennsylvania alone.[44] Thousands of German-speaking Swiss migrated to Appalachia in the second half of the 19th century, and their descendants remain in places such as East Bernstadt, Kentucky, and Gruetli-Laager, Tennessee.

I'd definitely say that Chakrabarti seems to be behind the times.

Another point to consider is the north south divide, it applies to education too. There are lots of area where more good could have been done, it's box ticking

All educational reviews and reforms and policies and exams, are box-ticking.
Schools are there to teach people, not put them in boxes.

Proper exams after proper enforced syllabus education criteria are the only ways of properly testing anyone on their ability to learn/understand/retain/relate said information in a way that is conducive towards demonstrating the higher level of brainpower that is necessary for so many things plus the advancement of knowledge gained towards formulation of new breakthroughs/concepts etc...
There is no point in giving anyone of any gender/colour/reliolgion/race specific background a special 'leg up' into a higher level of brainpower specific learning environment... if they are only there to 'make up the numbers' of 'diversity/equality' of pc gerrymandering etc... any more than it is worth trying to give a 'leg up' to old fat people to compete in the Olympics...!!!
