Doctor Confirms BigAndy9 Was Spot On
22nd January 2014
"BigAndy9 was spot on".
The Channel 4 documentary Benefits Street has caused uproar. It is a snapshot of an apparently feckless, lawless and broken society, whose members demand benefits as a right.
It has had critics on the Left lining up to condemn it, denouncing it as unfair and untrue, claiming it is deliberately fanning the flames of hatred. Some have even called for it to be pulled from the TV schedules.
I don’t agree — and I speak as someone from a poor family which was occasionally dependent on benefits. Above all, I am pleased the public is being introduced to the sort of people I am confronted by on a daily basis.
Only a few weeks ago, a patient spat and then threw a chair at me because I had the audacity to suggest that if he continued to inject himself with heroin every day, despite being in treatment for more than two years, he should be discharged from my care and that this might affect his benefits.
‘They can’t stop my money,’ he shouted. ‘I’ll just go thieving.’
Why can’t we question the system without fear of being branded heartless and cruel? It seems that the only position that the Left will countenance is the wholesale, unquestioning belief that all those who receive welfare benefits are deserving.
Certainly, I have great sympathy for those who find themselves down on their luck. I know what it’s like to be out of work and desperate.
It’s for periods such as this that benefits were created, and having witnessed the desperation in my parents’ eyes, I will defend the welfare state with all my might.
But we must acknowledge that a proportion of the people claiming benefits don’t deserve them; that there are people for whom benefits have become a way of life.
Regardless of where you are on the political spectrum — and I consider myself a socialist — you can support the welfare state while also criticising those who abuse the system.
But I fear we now have a welfare state that is no longer a safety net, but rather a feather-filled mattress on which to recline while playing your Xbox.
Every day my colleagues and I, and those we work closely with in social services and employment agencies, are confronted by people who have never worked and who think it is their right to receive state benefits.
