Why do people do things like this?
Explicit: 11-12 year olds given sex toy lesson in Jacksonville
(Infowars) – Shocking images out of a classroom in Jacksonville, Florida illustrate how 11-12 year olds in 6th grade are being taught how to use strap-on dildos amidst a debate about Common Core sex education standards which have been attacked by some as pornographic.
The pictures were taken by a student with a cellphone camera. They show a teacher demonstrating how to use a strap-on sex toy in a number of different positions.
In one image, the teacher even shows how to insert the strap-on while her buttocks are in the air and her legs up over her head.
In another image, the woman shows the children how to wear a harness to which the strap-on is attached.
Clinton Middle School in Duval County hired 39-year-old Sharon Mercer to teach the sex education class but after the photos emerged she was suspended and the school refused further comment. Mercer claimed her suspension was an act of “bigotry” because she was a “proud member of the LGBTQ community.”

I'm speechless. Ironically, there was a story on the news this morning in the UK about sex crimes involving children by children being on the up. I'd be really angry if my child were subjected to this. This is something you discover at a much later age if that's your bag, and what need is there to show kids this when they should be just enjoying being kids.

Re: Why do people do things like this?
Ah, so your title of this thread relates to the Snopes article rather than the images.
Why do people lie about things like this?
Because they have an aversion to kids being taught sex ed and think that by making up lies about things like this the authorities will take it out of the curriculum?

Re: Why do people do things like this?
Rumour has it that the lady was not Sharon Mercer. Mind you, there are photos around which show a young-looking person watching the antics of whoever it was. It's difficult to say exactly how old he was though.

Re: Why do people do things like this?
The photos displayed in the original article were not in fact pictures of a Florida substitute teacher named Sharon Mercer, but rather pictures of Carlyle Jansen, the founder and owner of Good for Her (a progressive, female-friendly sex store in Toronto, Ontario), who has upon occasion been invited to give talks about sexual health at Toronto-area high schools. But Ms. Jansen told us that she also teaches sex ed classes for adult audiences, that the photographs displayed in the outrage-provoking article were snapped at a university-level (not a sixth grade) class, and that she "would not have done those positions and discussed strap-ons to that extent in a high school setting."
Instead, someone repurposed those photos and incorporated them into a post that read as a sort of melange of moral panics, touching on fears about the threat of common core curriculum, openly gay teachers, and general ambient concerns about acceptance of homosexuality in society. As quickly as it appeared, the Infowars post evaporated, leaving behind only a cached version of the article behind.

Yes it's about the authenticity of the article and the answer is, because they can, and peolke believe it.
This kind of "reporting" is dangerous.

Is it? Well,, either way, it's not something 12 year olds need to be taught about. What's the point in posting something that's 2 years old?

The title was a bit misleading though - probably deliberately.

Yeah, but it does show how people just look at something and don't bother to look further behind it, instead just jumping in spouting off about how appalling it is.
You see it all the time in newspaper comments, on facebook and on forums.

Goodness knows what Ben was googling in order to stumble upon this story.
Anyway, the alleged person in the photos says she does give talks and demos to students, but not ones that young, and it's apparently not Sharon Mercer.
It's all a bit weird anyway IMO.

I've got to admit to being horrified initially when i read the quoted bit, then read the links and realised what the thread title was actually about.
