Thatcher pushed for breakup of welfare state despite NHS pledge
Margaret Thatcher secretly tried to press ahead with a politically toxic plan to dismantle the welfare state even after a “cabinet riot” and her famous declaration that the “NHS is safe with us”, newly released Treasury documents show.
The plan commissioned by Thatcher and her chancellor Sir Geoffrey Howe included proposals to charge for state schooling, introduce compulsory private health insurance and a system of private medical facilities that “would, of course, mean the end of the National Health Service”.
These papers flatly contradict Thatcher’s claim that the CPRS proposals were never seriously considered by ministers.

And some people wonder why some folk didn't shed tears at her passing.

Some people actually believed that 'the NHS was safe in her hands'. Some people are bloody fools.

I WILL NEVER understand the mentality of that handful of Brits on here forever defending Maggie's terms in government; nor crying over her death...
Let's just consider some of that enduring legacy that she left behind :
Increased levels of national debt
Millions of unemployed workers
Greatly increased levels of homelessness
Housing even less affordable
A deminished manufacturing sector
Near-death of the mining sector
A more divided country..
And those Thatcherites on here still claim that was a good thing ?
