We're incredibly grateful having Australia as our southern beacon of hope, and as it once was a colony made up of wrong uns and criminals, perhaps we could export some of our far right chaps to this wonderful continent of our realm, they're always whining about this place, they'd be welcomed with bunting, ticker tape and open arms in the land of Oz.

Looking at their website, it doesn't look like they have done any development work in the last 5 or 6 years.  (Talk about "resting on one's laurels" and "trading on one's (past) reputation"..).

LIVING near one of Oz's three main industrial regions, (the other two being around Wollongong and Geelong..),  I know for a fact that there are still a lot of first-class manufacturing SMEs still down here --  even if half of our heavy industries have moved offshore...

AS WITH similar manufacturers in Britain, Western Europe and North America, many times they have to compete with cheaper labour competitors from China, India, South America and Eastern Europe..

(Back in the 1980s, the secondary/ manufacturing sector made up around 30% of the Aussie economy. These days it's down closer to 15%, being left behind as both the Primary and Tertiary/Service sectors have raced ahead.. ).

Anyone remember neighbours? Bloke that played Joe Mangel? Too early for names... He was on tele a while back commenting on immigration on some chat show. Anyhow, he was saying how it annoys him when Australia's immigration system is held as one to aspire too. He said we keep our immigrants on cages on the beaches and treat them like shit. No matter how our Australian contingent wish to portray their country as a beacon of light for dealing with immigration and everyone down under is oh so pc and tickety boo. Fact is, it isn't.

The Australian Liberal Party is our largest conservative political party.  Though in the main they are a "centre right" party, like Tory and Republican parties everywhere they do have their looney too  extreme-right-wing factions;  in this case allying themselves closely with the American "Tea Party" faction of the Republicans.

That area of their organisation where you find the racist elements, anti-immigration xenophobes, isolationists, evangelical religious nutters, and fascist-minded control freaks congregating..

Effectively,  the Aussie Liberal Party is the party for big business and capital, while the Labor Party is still the workers' and true liberals organisation, while the Greens have picked up a lot of the community based and enviro' areas, and the Nationals cover the more conservative sectors of the rural votes..).


Although the Liberal National coalition is currently in gov't, how far they have drifted from mainstream thinking is reflected by the Liberal Party getting less than 38% of the votes in the last Federal election.
Their party membership has also dropped enormously in recent years --  in the 1990s, when John Howard was PM, they had around 55,000 members.  This year, it had dwindled down to only around 10,500 paid-up members  !!!
Needless to say,  I never vote for the Liberal Party..

Thank you for that informative post wolf, I suspected something of the sort. Some good while back I bought a triton router table...which is an excellent bit of kit. Recently a friend bought one and it's garbage in comparison. The disabled scooter rrefer too is one my missus bought, after only 2years of relatively light use its scrap. It has a number of serious design faults,which led to its demise.

I inherited a Triton workcentre and a router table off my father, that he had bought a couple of decades ago...

They work quite well, once you have them set up properly.  The fences can be a little awkward, and slower to adjust, then some of the newer competitors, but they're less costly and complicated, as well..

Even though I'm already planning on buying a better table saw one day, I won't be selling the Triton  work centre --  I reckon it will be more sensible to keep it as a backup, and if I have the room, maybe leave it set up permanently in straight forward table saw mode, for small, quick and easy jobs.
