FBI foils terrorist plot to blow up Kansas apartment complex the day after election
An alleged plot to blow up a Kansas apartment complex filled with Somali immigrants one day after the November elections aimed to create a "bloodbath" to "wake up" the country politically, according to one of three members of a militia group charged with domestic terrorism, federal authorities say.
Authorities said Friday that Curtis Allen and Gavin Wright, both 49 and from Liberal, Kan., and Patrick Eugene Stein, 47, of Wright, Kan., were members of a small, anti-Muslim group called the Crusaders that espoused sovereign citizen, anti-government, anti-Muslim and anti-immigrant extremist beliefs.
They had allegedly been plotting since February to blow up the apartment complex and mosque in Garden City, a meatpacking town in western Kansas. Prosecutors said the thwarted attack was planned for the day after the November elections.
"These individuals had the desire, the means, the capability to carry out this act of domestic terrorism," Eric Jackson, FBI Kansas City special agent in charge, said in announcing the arrests in Wichita.
Acting U.S. Attorney Tom Beall said at the news conference in downtown Wichita that the plot "was imminent and ... these individuals, they were committed to carrying this out."
According to a federal complaint released after the arrests, Stein was surreptitiously taped in June referring to the Somalis as "cockroaches" and saying "the only (expletive) way this country's ever going to get turned around is it will be a bloodbath and it will be a nasty, messy (expletive.)"
"Unless a lot more people in this country wake up and smell the (expletive) coffee and decide they want this country back ... we might be too late, if they do wake up ... I think we can get it done. But it ain’t going to be nothing nice about it,” Stein was recorded as saying, according to the federal affidavit.
Beall said the investigation involved an FBI probe “deep into a hidden culture of hatred, violence.”
Under the alleged plot, the three — described as architects of the scheme — planned to park vehicles loaded with explosives at all four corners of the apartment complex and detonate them using a cellphone.
Although authorities had been monitoring the group for months through a paid informant, police moved in Tuesday after Allen's girlfriend called Liberal, Kan., police to report a domestic battery incident. Stein also told the FBI informant that he was worried Allen’s girlfriend would go to the police and disclose the militia’s plans, Beall said.

Tommy, you have to remember this is America...
running around, blowing things up and killing people is a sort of national pastime second it seems only to baseball and the zombie apocalypse (considering both baseball and the zombie apocalypse involve bashing things with big clubs are the two synonymous??)
so the likelyhood of it being as stated is remarkably high......

You're correct, there is either conspicuous silence from the far-right on forums regarding this or flaccid attempts to throw doubt on the honesty of the FBI.Ben Reilly wrote:

I remember reading that someone was appalled by the Anders Beivik slaughter, thinking he was an Islamic extremist, until he discovered Breivik was a fellow extreme rwer, taking out kids at a Labour party summer camp. That anger turned joy delight when the author found out the truth.

I recall something similar when news broke of an (allegedly) Britain First supporter slaughtering poor Joe Cox. Unfortunately for us ordinary folk extremists tend to be blinded by their own constructed realities. Far-right Islamists and far-right nationalists - as bad as each other.

I'm going to answer this. I've said it a hundred and fifty two times or more...any extremism is rubbish, whether it's extreme left or extreme right. There has to be balance and extremism doesn't give balance.
As to the OP not sure why you think it's not true.

So I asked if there was any further evidence... and you have put up a link to some...
Doesn't make me a moron!
Having read through most of it... it does appear to be the case that these 3 were talking about carrying out a terrorist attack... and it appears one had looked up/downloaded info on how to make ieds...
And if they really were going to do it rather than just being 3 stupid twats talking rubbish to each other to try to look 'tough' etc... then I'm glad they have been picked up early and will be facing serious jail time for it!
But wont the authorities need more than just bits of conversations and hearsay...
Surely the authorities should have waited until they actually started making devices to be sure they really meant business... and to have the hard evidence to secure the maximum convictions...?

Conspiracy to commit acts of terrorism can easily carry a prison sentence of 12-20 years. Better to get them behind bars before they can hurt anyone.
Re: FBI foils terrorist plot to blow up Kansas apartment complex the day after election
Completely agree, I believe they had a tape of them plotting, I've been reading about it in a few places.

Re: FBI foils terrorist plot to blow up Kansas apartment complex the day after election
But there is a difference between people saying something and no other evidence... and saying the same but also having a shed load of bomb making materials...
First scenario not as conclusive as second... could easily say it was all bollocks and they were never going to do anything of the sort... just drunken waffle etc...
Second scenario is banged to rights!!!

Re: FBI foils terrorist plot to blow up Kansas apartment complex the day after election
It was the second scenerio - didn't you realise?
‘It will be a bloodbath’: Inside the Kansas militia plot to ignite a religious war
The “Crusaders” knew they wanted to kill Muslims — and with luck, use the “bloodbath” to ignite a religious war — but for months they couldn’t settle on a plan.
The easiest way would be to grab guns, go to the predominantly Somali-Muslim apartment complex they’d been surveilling and start kicking in doors, court documents said. They would spare no one, not even babies.
In the end, they decided to set off bombs similar to the one Timothy McVeigh used in 1995 to kill 168 people in Oklahoma City. They planned to strike after the Nov. 8 election, investigators said.
Curtis Allen, Gavin Wright and Patrick Eugene Stein face federal charges of conspiring to use a weapon of mass destruction to blow up an apartment complex, a mosque and Muslim immigrants from Somalia, the Department of Justice announced Friday.
Federal court documents reveal how the trio’s hatred and Islamophobia coalesced into a plan for domestic terrorism.
It was ultimately undone by an FBI confidential informant and Allen’s girlfriend, who showed authorities Allen’s supply room after he allegedly hit her during a fight.
[Three Kansas men calling themselves ‘Crusaders’ charged in terror plot targeting Muslim immigrants]
Earlier this year, investigators were tipped off by the informant, who had attended meetings of a group calling itself the Crusaders. Allen, Wright and Stein were the leaders and the chief architects of the plan, investigators say.
The informant said the group’s focus was an apartment complex in Garden City, Kan., that had an apartment-turned-mosque attended by Muslims from Somalia. The Crusaders referred to them as cockroaches.
“They chose the target location based on their hatred of these groups, their perception that these groups represent a threat to American society, a desire to inspire other militia groups, and a desire to ‘wake people up,’” according to a criminal complaint unsealed this week.
As they hatched a plan, Stein took the lead on surveillance. Sometimes he rode alone, sometimes he would have the confidential informant drive him. He would survey potential targets at the apartment complex, the mosque or a nearby mall.
Inside the vehicle he kept a pistol, an assault rifle and ammunition, a bullet-resistant vest and a night vision scope.
The surveillance wasn’t covert.
“Stein, at various times, yelled at Somali women dressed in traditional garb, calling them “f—– raghead b——,” the complaint says.
On trips, he also admiringly discussed the Oklahoma City bombing and the fuel oil and ammonium nitrate device McVeigh exploded in front of it.
All the while, the three men mulled their plans, using high-tech and simple methods to avoid detection. They used an app called Zello to encrypt their phone calls. Sometimes, they met in an open field.
Their conversations blurred between active planning and hate speech.
“Make sure if you start using your bow on them cockroaches, make sure you dip them in pig’s blood before you shoot them,” Stein said in an April 2016 Zello call that was recorded by the confidential informant. Consuming pork is forbidden by Islam.
At a meeting a month later, Allen suggested the group make hundreds of signs saying “‘I support illegal immigration, I go against the constitution on a daily basis, I do not have any care for my fellow citizens in the state or in the town that I represent.’ . . . and then for everyone of them that we blow the top of their head off we just put that around their neck.”
Gavin Wright, left, and Curtis Allen are two of three members of a Kansas militia group who were charged Friday with plotting to bomb an apartment building filled with Somali immigrants in Garden City, Kan. (Sedgwick County Sheriff’s Office via AP)
Their plans began to solidify over the summer as they narrowed down their targets. In August, they settled on the apartment complex in Garden City, a Somali-Muslim enclave, the complaint says. They planned to use cars to set off explosions at the exits to the complex. The explosions would boom around prayer time, when most people would be gathering.
At some point, Allen began watching YouTube videos to learn how to make explosives.
He also got to work on a manifesto. But federal investigators, monitoring recordings of their meetings, already knew the group’s guiding philosophies:
“The only f—— way this country’s ever going to get turned around is it will be a bloodbath and it will be a nasty, messy motherf—–,” Stein said in June.
“Unless a lot more people in this country wake up and smell the f—— coffee and decide they want this country back . . . we might be too late, if they do wake up . . . I think we can get it done. But it ain’t going to be nothing nice about it.”
[‘We saw these guys just dripping with blood’: A quiet night at a Minnesota mall turns to panic]
In September, the feds strengthened their case. Stein met with a man who said he could get the group guns. But the gunrunner was really an FBI employee, and the guns Stein fired in a rural part of Finney County, Kan., were from the FBI lab in Quantico, Va.
The Crusaders had other problems. Allen was arrested Tuesday for domestic battery. His girlfriend said Allen beat her during an argument over money. She told the officers who responded that Allen had access to a gun.
One of the last conversations investigators recorded of the Crusaders was when Stein told an undercover agent that Allen’s girlfriend “needs to disappear.”
But it was already too late for the group. She showed officers the room where Allen had been making ammunition and said she believed he had been mixing explosives, too. Police say it was hexamethylene triperoxide diamine, which is used to create homemade blasting caps.
Investigators closed in on Allen on Tuesday, trailing a GMC Yukon that Allen had been driving and stopping it near Highway 83. Inside the SUV, they found AR-15 and AK-47 magazines, and bullets for a handgun — a weapons cache they believe was linked to the planned attacks.
The men were arrested last week and face life in prison if convicted.

Ben Reilly wrote:An alleged plot to blow up a Kansas apartment complex filled with Somali immigrants one day after the November elections aimed to create a "bloodbath" to "wake up" the country politically, according to one of three members of a militia group charged with domestic terrorism, federal authorities say.
