Re: make your own minds up
Here is a lot more detailed info about him for people to make their minds up...
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Robert_Byrd
"Ku Klux Klan[edit]
In the early 1940s, Byrd recruited 150 of his friends and associates to create a new chapter of the Ku Klux Klan in Sophia, West Virginia.[12][13]
According to Byrd, a Klan official told him, "You have a talent for leadership, Bob ... The country needs young men like you in the leadership of the nation." Byrd later recalled, "Suddenly lights flashed in my mind! Someone important had recognized my abilities! I was only 23 or 24 years old, and the thought of a political career had never really hit me. But strike me that night, it did."[19] Byrd became a recruiter and leader of his chapter.[13] When it came time to elect the top officer (Exalted Cyclops) in the local Klan unit, Byrd won unanimously.[13]
In December 1944, Byrd wrote to segregationist Mississippi Senator Theodore G. Bilbo:
I shall never fight in the armed forces with a negro by my side ... Rather I should die a thousand times, and see Old Glory trampled in the dirt never to rise again, than to see this beloved land of ours become degraded by race mongrels, a throwback to the blackest specimen from the wilds.
— Robert C. Byrd, in a letter to Sen. Theodore Bilbo (D-MS), 1944[13][20]
In 1946, Byrd wrote a letter to a Grand Wizard stating, "The Klan is needed today as never before, and I am anxious to see its rebirth here in West Virginia and in every state in the nation."[21] However, when running for the United States House of Representatives in 1952, he announced "After about a year, I became disinterested, quit paying my dues, and dropped my membership in the organization. During the nine years that have followed, I have never been interested in the Klan." He said he had joined the Klan because he felt it offered excitement and was anti-communist.[13]
In 1997, Byrd told an interviewer he would encourage young people to become involved in politics but also warned, "Be sure you avoid the Ku Klux Klan. Don't get that albatross around your neck. Once you've made that mistake, you inhibit your operations in the political arena."[22] In his last autobiography, Byrd explained that he was a KKK member because he "was sorely afflicted with tunnel vision — a jejune and immature outlook — seeing only what I wanted to see because I thought the Klan could provide an outlet for my talents and ambitions."[23] Byrd also said, in 2005, "I know now I was wrong. Intolerance had no place in America. I apologized a thousand times ... and I don't mind apologizing over and over again. I can't erase what happened."[13]"

Re: make your own minds up
The point is, Byrd left the KKK when Hillary Clinton was a small child, and the Byrd she befriended was the one who had already spent decades denouncing the KKK. Not to mention that Clinton campaigned for and worked for America's first and only black president, and that she received the endorsement of America's first and only black president, and that he's doing a stellar job campaigning for her as we speak.
Or to mention that Clinton has been endorsed by four prominent figures associated with the NAACP, while Trump has been endorsed not only by the KKK, but also a number of other white supremacist organizations. Or to mention that nobody has been assaulted and called a "n---er" at a Clinton rally, as has happened at at least one Trump rally, along with this:
Trump, on the other hand, is the guy who finally got around to denouncing former Klansman (and still white supremacist) David Duke's endorsement.
I don't mind right-wingers trying to deceive the public any more -- it's their business model, after all -- it just gets me when they're so damn clumsy about it. Even a few minutes of research will show that this video is untrue and meant to manipulate the public. And anyone with a brain cell can see how illogical this whole gambit is.

He didn't just change his outward view, he denounced the KKK. You think that was done to help the cause of white nationalism?
You think saying it's wrong to be racist helps racists?

I think he joined originally in order to be hired for some job. We've had this thread a couple of times before.
Byrd and the Clintons were quite close. Both were originally southerners. Byrd said joining the Klan was his "greatest mistake." Furthermore, during the 108th Congress the NAACP gave him a 100% rating on their issues.

No idea -- the Hamlet quote is, "The lady doth protest too much, methinks."
At any rate, Byrd spent the majority of his life denouncing racism, and when you consider the rest of reality, the idea that Clinton had any friendship with Byrd because of some sort of secret mutual adherence to white supremacy is beyond stupid.

Re: make your own minds up
I admit I have never heard of Robert Byrd, but reading through his bio it seems his support of the KKK when he was in his 20's was a mistake on his part to further his budding career, which he later regretted and spoke about.
People make mistakes...he was young and stupid.
I admire Hilary Clintons support of him, proves she is a loyal friend, even though she probably knew speaking out in favour of him after his death would invite criticism.

Dean, regardless of why you personally think he denounced the KKK; trying to attack Clinton as a supporter of a racist fantatic is clearly a nonsense. I'm hardly a fan of hers but be fair- if anyone is guilty recently of championing racist loons it is Trump- do you think he'd be a better president?

It did -- and you have to be a fool to be taken in by it. Dean's obsession with greasy poles aside, Byrd seems to have genuinely regretted his association with the KKK, and the notion that Clinton is somehow tarnished by association with him, especially in light of everything else we know about her, is malarkey.
