Apple tax!
Why are we being bombarded by the BBC, Éire, and the US telling us that not paying your taxes is cool, and why are the EU now chasing tax evaders, who was holding them back?

The propaganda punted out by the Beeb is getting worse, you can see the newsreaders wide eyed fury and spittle if Corbyns name is mention, corporate slave masters swan off with the swag and they're worshipped as loveable rouges, one rule for them another for the rest of us, and still the sheep vote to continue with this farce.sassy wrote:Absolute madness, we should be doing it to all the blasted tax dodgers!

Re: Apple tax!
Well if the chasm between the Brexit and Ireland wasn't wide enough this well maybe the thing that deepens it to the breaking point >EU hits Apple with $14.6 billion tax bill
by Ivana Kottasova August 30, 2016: 6:05 PM ETThe tax ruling is the biggest the European Union has ever made regarding a single company, and it could spark a huge transatlantic row over how Europe treats U.S. companies.
Apple shares initially fell almost 3%, but then recovered most of their losses. The company will appeal the decision. It said the ruling upended the international tax system and would damage jobs and investment in Europe.
The European Commission, which administers EU law, said the Irish government had granted illegal state aid to Apple (AAPL, Tech30) by helping the tech giant to artificially lower its tax bill for more than 20 years.
"[EU] member states cannot give tax benefits to selected companies -- this is illegal under EU state aid rules," said Commissioner Margrethe Vestager, Europe's top antitrust official.
The United States fired back immediately, saying retroactive tax assessments by the EU were unfair.
"The Commission's actions could threaten to undermine foreign investment, the business climate in Europe, and the important spirit of economic partnership between the U.S. and the EU," a Treasury spokesperson said.
The decision amounted to "a transfer of revenue from U.S. taxpayers to the EU," White House press secretary Josh Earnest said. The Obama administration would fight for "American taxpayers and American businesses overseas when they're being treated unfairly," he added.
Apple paid tax at 1%, or less, on profits attributed to its subsidiaries in Ireland, well below the 35% top rate of corporate tax in the United States and Ireland's 12.5% rate.
That prompted complaints by both European and U.S. lawmakers, who argued that Apple had been given an unfair advantage in exchange for creating jobs in Ireland. CEO Tim Cook was even called to testify on Apple's tax arrangements with Ireland before a Senate committee in 2013.
The bill for tax benefits, plus interest, covers 2003 to 2014. Apple has more than $231 billion in cash on its balance sheet to cushion the blow.
Cook said on Tuesday the ruling had "no basis in fact or in law," calling it "obvious targeting of Apple."
Apple had helped create and sustain more than 1.5 million jobs across Europe, follows the law and pays all the taxes it owes, he added.
"The European Commission has launched an effort to rewrite Apple's history in Europe, ignore Ireland's tax laws and upend the international tax system in the process," he wrote.
Ireland said it will appeal the decision, saying Apple paid what it owed. The country has one of the lowest corporate tax rates in Europe, which makes it an attractive place for global companies.
The Irish government is afraid companies would be less likely to invest in Ireland if its tax regime changes, which could cost the country thousands of jobs.
Apple is not the only American company that has recently found itself under scrutiny over its European tax affairs.
The European Commission ordered Starbucks and Fiat Chrysler to repay millions in taxes last October.
Starbucks (SBUX) has to pay back up to 30 million euros it saved thanks to a sweetheart tax deal with the Netherlands. Fiat Chrysler (FCAM) was ordered to repay a similar amount after a similar deal with Luxembourg.
Both companies have appealed the decisions.
The EU is also probing the tax arrangements of Amazon (AMZN, Tech30) and McDonald's (MCD). Google (GOOGL, Tech30) is under investigation over its taxes in France and a couple of other European countries.
The ruling against Apple's tax deal comes despite a stern warning from the U.S. Treasury Department last week that it would consider "potential responses" if the Commission doesn't change course.
The U.S. Chamber of Commerce said the EU's ruling "feeds the perception that the Commission is unfairly targeting U.S. businesses."
"When coupled with ongoing competition investigations against several U.S. manufacturers, technology companies, and services providers, this ruling raises significant new questions about Europe's attractiveness as an investment destination for U.S. business," the Chamber said in a statement.

Right, so Apple being told to pay back tax tax to THE IRISH REVENUE AUTHORITY, because Ireland is part of the EU and the EU has said that the tax break they have allowed Apple is illegal is difficult to understand? Well it would be for you Tommy of course. Add to that, Apple world wide have set up an administrative HQ that is virtual, so it cannot received mail or phone calls, and therefore does not pay tax on it's world wide income and the tax it is getting away with runs into £14.5 BILLION just in Ireland, world wide it incalculable.

Re: Apple tax!
A United States Senate committee said in 2013 that Apple had negotiated a special corporate tax rate of 2 percent or less in Ireland. While the committee did not accuse Apple of breaking any laws, lawmakers criticized the “gimmicks,” “schemes” and complex corporate structures that allowed the company to sidestep taxes. The public scrutiny and the emergence of previously confidential information about Apple’s tax arrangements, in part, helped spark Europe’s own investigation into the issue.

Yea, read that up there in my article ...and how one of the negotiated methods for bringing Apple over to Ireland was the 'Special Rate'; but Apple had been paying their rated percentage but not according to the EU's ratio tax code!
Something all corporations push for whether on a national level or even in rural small municipalities ...getting a 'Special Tax Incentive' is common business practice used to draw businesses into your region - business that will BRING JOBS!

Re: Apple tax!
THERE IS THAT "multiplier effect" all along the way, where big multinationals the likes of Apple, Google, Facebook, IBM, HP, Esso, BP, Exxon, GM, Ford, et al, are shuffling profits along from one country to another, until they eventually stop in those low-tax "havens" like Ireland, Jersey, the Cook islands, Panama...
Out of that $US 14.6 billion dollars, maybe 40% will actually be owable back in the USA and Canada. Even little old Australia will probably be due some $500->>700 million in unpaid taxes, just for this one year..
Apple is only being singled out because they're the biggest tax-avoider in the gang. Add in other tax-dodges by just the world's 15 or 20 biggest corporations alone, and the likely tax bill could well be ten times as big..
IF, in that case, Oz might be owed some $5 billion in taxes just from those big multinationals, Britain will likely be due some $US 11->13 billion ??? Just imagine what a difference a tax revenue boost like that could make to your guvm'nts spending on welfare, health and education..
ONCE AGAIN Tommy and Stormee prove that they know absolutely zich about either economics or big business. Is it any wonder then, that those two are so easily led into parroting whatever nonsense their corporate masters care to dripfeed them..

Britain is aiming to become a tax haven for greedy global enterprises, especially those in the service sector that feed 77% of our GDP, low wage, low productivity, limited worker rights and the privatisation of health, education and housing will be the road we travel down, and this is why it is so vital to support Jeremy Corbyn, the only alternative available.

Re: Apple tax!
Ireland certainly got itself in a hell of a mess and I can nremember 'sniffer' Osborne telling us how wonderful they were and how we should be emulating their economic success. In fact he even went to Ireland to tell them that,,,
And here's his speech and if you can get through that without laughing you will do well to get to this bit,,,
"Second, a modern European economy must attract capital in a world with ever more diverse investment opportunities. Ireland has done that, too. By 1996, foreign-owned firms had come to account for nearly half of manufacturing employment, and nearly two-thirds of manufactured exports. A quarter of Europe’s computers are made in Ireland, and much of its Viagra. And leading global firms like Apple, Google, Intel, and Microsoft have chosen to locate their European operations here.
We in Britain would do well to listen and learn from our Irish neighbours"
.
http://conservativehome.blogs.com/torydiary/files/george_osborne_speech.pdf
Now George was barely out of Heathrow Airport on his return from Dublim before the shit had hit the fan but never mind because David Cameron was so impressed by Osborne he decided to hand him control of the UK economy by appointing him Chancellor of the Exchequer of his government. And the first Act that Osborne had to put in place was this one,,,
That was our George approving a loan to Ireland that was part of the UK's £7 billion package to bail out Ireland from the shit they were in and to keep them in the Euro. Poor George didn't even get a Red face as he spoke in Paliament to get it passed.
So yes, Apple should cough up because it will enable Ireland to pay us back for the loans that we gave to Ireland.
Amazing huh!

So what were the labour govt and the eu saying about corporations running their profits through front offices in Ireland from at least as far back as 2004 while paying little to no tax on any of it...?

It doesn't matter what they were saying Tommy, the cat is out of the bag now and it's payback time - we need the money.

Re: Apple tax!
But here's my position {&/or question} wasn't the method that Ireland used to entice those large corporations over to their bonny shores with those 'lower corp. tax incentives' the very reason's that Ireland beat out so many other option locations that led to these corporations choosing their final destination sights?Scrat stated > The EU wants its own form of corporate governance, it is a bureaucrats dream, anti worker and pro austerity with aspirations of becoming the United States of Europe, thankfully us Brits saw what was coming and bailed out just in time, there's no doubt that the French and Germans are now acting out of spite, however chasing multinationals for the correct level of taxation is a good and just cause and the only country they're likely to relocate to is the UK if we secure a decent trade agreement.
If - IF the EU is able to undo the 'tax credit' agreement {Apple's Tax Lawyers said they've paid what was agreed upon each year} and all of this get tied up in continuous litigation ...how many other big corporations are going to come 'knocking' at your door when they see this fall out happening to their competitor businesses? From Irn's article > And leading global firms like Apple, Google, Intel, and Microsoft have chosen to locate their European operations here
