GUT - WRENCHED and I'm just so pissed; trying to find rhyme or reason for such tragic accidents - when this and things like it will become more common place as our State's School Districts have suffered under the ignorance of our Governor's Brilliant Budget Hacking Methods.Four people, including three Silver Lake students, killed in US-24 highway crash
Fifth person involved in crash injured but in stable condition

SILVER LAKE — Four people were killed and a fifth person was critically injured in a two-car crash Thursday morning on a two-lane highway just northwest of Topeka.
Of the four killed, three were students from Silver Lake schools.
Kansas Highway Patrol identified the fatality victims as Gaby Greeve, 11, a sixth-grader at Silver Lake Elementary School, Tyler Crouse, 14, a ninth-grader at Silver Lake High School, Devin Greeve, 17, a 12th-grader at Silver Lake High School, and Lance Lenard, 47, of Rossville.
All three of the student fatality victims, Gaby and Devin Greeve and Tyler Crouse, all of Topeka, were passengers in the same car, a white 1999 Subaru Impreza that Devin Greeve was driving. The fourth fatality victim, Lenard, was the driver in a gray 2007 Pontiac Vibe.
Kade Lenard, 13, of Rossville, also in the Vibe, was listed by KHP on Thursday afternoon as injured but stable at Stormont Vail Hospital.
In a statement released early Thursday afternoon, Silver Lake superintendent Tim Hallacy said students in grades six to 12 and their parents were notified of the tragic news on Thursday morning.
“We have provided extra counseling support for students and staff today and will tomorrow, as well,” Hallacy said. “Please keep all the families involved in your thoughts and prayers as we all work through this difficult and sad time together.”
The crash between the Impreza and the Vibe occurred about 7:20 a.m. in the 8400 block of N.W. US-24 highway, about 50 yards west of Humphrey Road.
According to a news release from KHP, the crash occurred when the Impreza, which was westbound on US-24, dropped off the right shoulder and overcorrected.
Kansas Highway Patrol trooper Jory Custar said the Impreza then was hit on its passenger side by the eastbound Vibe.
Sideway skid marks could be seen from the Impreza on the eastbound lane of the highway.
It took first responders approximately 30 minutes to extricate the first occupant of the Vibe before that person was transported to a local hospital. It took another 45 minutes to get the second occupant out of the car.
Devin Greeve, Lance Lenard and Kade Lenard were taken by American Medical Response ambulance to a Topeka hospital, the Kansas Highway Patrol crash log indicated. Gaby Greeve and Crouse were declared dead on the scene.
The Impreza came to a rest facing northeast in the eastbound side of the two-lane highway, while the Vibe ended up facing north in the ditch on the south side of the road.
The Kansas Highway Patrol took control of the investigation. Troopers mapped out the crash scene on the ground, with a KHP airplane assisting from overhead.
According to the KHP crash log, all of the occupants except for Crouse were wearing seat belts.
US-24 was closed for about a mile in either direction immediately after the crash, and was closed until 12:12 p.m.
Traffic was diverted onto surrounding gravel roads until the scene was cleared.
In addition to the Kansas Highway Patrol and AMR ambulance, the Shawnee County Sheriff’s Office and Silver Lake Fire Department responded to the scene.
“The patrol extends our sincere condolences to the families of those who were involved in the crash, and to the local communities, who we know will be impacted,” KHP said in a news release.

These two Greeve siblings are the children of 2 former employee's that worked 3 summer's for my husband and I ...in fact they met and started dating while on our work crew. We'd hoped that they'd be interested in buying our business &/or taking over when my husbands health started going south but their interest and life career went in other directions.
I'm just that this has happened - on the first day of school - for such a wonderful family and last year, they'd been on a school bus route but not this year!
Life - it certainly can SUCK at times!

Oh that is horrible!!!! Obviously kids have to travel much further distances where you are, and if they all have to get there individually, that is madness.

Often the decision is based off of enrollment figures vs bus routes and what is feasible vs what is affordable! And since we'd never - NEVER EVER cut back on all of those transportation costs for getting those high school: football players/coaches/equipment/cheer squad/student booster supporters to those after school games ...those never get cut but transportation to get students from home to school for their education gets cut and it's always the first to get the AX.
Just recently the Wichita School district cut bus routs to their middle and grade school children that live along a 6 lane highway; the decision was made because there 'didn't appear to be to many children in need on that side of the 6 lane highway, so that bus route go the AX first! So how exactly were all of those 347 little kids that lived in those middle to low income homes SUPPOSED to cross that 6 lane highway; no cross walks - no over head crossing walk - no existing sidewalks and no one thought to warn the parents before school started on Monday! And all 347 little kids {5 - 13} stood around waiting & waiting & waiting until parents started calling asking the school district WTH had happened to the bus - was it coming - was it in an accident - was there transportation ever going to show up? And then one by one the parents started spreading the word around that section of town; Nope, no buses now or ever ...your child will have to find other means of getting to school
CLUSTER F'd up mess and out here in the rural area - where young people with learners permits - gaining access to main highways with adults trying to get to work in the early morning - weather conditions - placing student drivers in peril and the other drivers as well.
What a way to start a new school year!

TYPICAL Bureaucratic SNAFU....
PUT a 6 lane highway/motorway through a district, with no way for pedestrians, cyclists, cross-traffic (nor wildlife..) to get across..
AND THEN, the state government (and local agencies -- like the district school board in these cases..) will tell those students' parents that those children will have to find their own way to school !?! All because a penny-pinching school district starts cutting bus services..
SURELY both the State and the School District are leaving themselves open to some serious class action litigation in those situations ?

It's been an ongoing political tug of 'WAR' between our school finance VS the Federal law suit + our belligerent/ignorant governor and his trashing our
A.) school finance
B.) by getting our Federal Lawsuit filed against our state
C.) totally F'n up the budget with his 'Reaganomic Thought Process' for tax cuts
D.) and since he was re-elected the Federal Funding is tired of waiting and they won't budge and schools have lost millions in matching dollars
E.) and school districts are left to juggle what funds they operated on 8 years ago in a cost expanded world that didn't stay stagnant but grew larger and became more expensive to live in
F.) and the teachers and the students are suffering!
We've lost a lot of excellent qualified tenured teachers - leaving KS to go teach somewhere else where they have the funds to do their jobs correctly; where they aren't having to pay out of pocket to supply even the basic daily tools needed for their own classrooms!
It's a mess and parents get pissed when the mire idea of cutting any of those 'glorfied sports' out of a schools yearly budget - yet they'll be the first to stand an chant/rant and threaten, when the school district asks to raise the mill levy {tax base} for that school to support and pay for all those Special non-academic enjoyable sports programs!
