My father - my grandfather would be thinking it wasn't a finished proto type of a rife! Or something ODD. Lordy, that's a freaky looking contraption.
Ok, she's a 'WHIZ-KID' and quite the dead-eye-dick with a scope; but that contraption that they've taken her photo with ... WTHVirginia native Ginny Thrasher, 19, shoots her way to first U.S. gold medal in Rio
August 6 at 10:17 AM
Thrasher, a Springfield, Va., native who first fired a gun five years ago when she felled a whitetail deer while hunting with her grandfather, was one of eight competitors to emerge from the 50-woman qualification round this morning. She began her finals bid with a stunning bullseye that yielded a perfect score of 10.9, eventually outlasting Serbia’s top-ranked Andrea Arsovic and China’s defending Olympic champion Siling Yi.
The final duel came down to Thrasher and Li Du, China’s 34-year-old who won gold medals in the 2004 and 2008 Olympics. Thrasher, well, thrashed her veteran opponent by a full point, a wide margin in perhaps the Games’ most precise sport.
Earlier this year, Thrasher became the only freshman ever to sweep both NCAA individual air rifle titles while helping West Virginia capture its fourth-straight national title.
Sarah Scherer, Thrasher’s 25-year-old teammate, finished eighth among the event’s 50 competitors. Competing in her final Games, Scherer sat out for much of the last two years after undergoing two major back surgeries to repair herniated discs.

Rio 2016: The first American Olympian to compete in a hijab wins a bronze medal
Ibtihaj Muhammad won the medal in the team sabre fencing event
The first US athlete to compete at the Olympics wearing a hijab has won a bronze medal.
Ibtihaj Muhammad was part of the team who came third in the women’s team sabre fencing.
Muhammad competed with Dagmara Wozniak, Mariel Zagunis and Monica Aksamit to defeat the Italian team 45-30.
The team hadn’t medalled all year and Muhammad described them as “underdogs”.
“I’m hoping that through my experience at the Olympic Games, through winning a medal, that I combat and break those stereotypes and misconceptions that people have about Muslims, African-Americans and even about women,” Ms Muhammad is reported to have said, according to the Wall Street Journal.
She added that winning the bronze medal was the best experience of her life.
The US team painted a colourful picture on the podium with pink, blonde and purple hair, plus Muhammad's headscarf.
From left, Dagmara Wozniak, Ibtihaj Muhammad, Monica Aksamit and Mariel Zagunis of the United States (AP)
"This is sport. It doesn't matter what hair colour you have, what religion you are. The point is to go out there and be the best athlete you can be," said Polish-born Dagmara Wozniak of Team USA. "We're the best explanation of what America is: a mix of so many different cultures and races and everything all together.
Muhammad joined the national fencing team in 2010 and was a three-time All-American and 2005 Junior Olympic Champion at Duke University.
She has been outspoken in the past about the discrimination she has faced and was seen as a potential candidate to carry the American flag at the opening ceremony, which was eventually carried by Michael Phelps.

AUSTRALIA'S men's basketball team has made it into the medal-playoff round for the first time !!!
Even though in previous Olympics and world contests, they've given the leading basketball nations a run for their money, occasionally beating the big boys in opening rounds -- they've never made it this far before..

I will root for the ...I like rooting for those 'FIRST TIME WINNERS'; shoot the USA doesn't have to bring home the GOLD in every event - every 4 years!

Re: **MEDAL COUNT**
THEY'RE still going to be the first Aussie basketball team to get this far, and even if they only get bronze, they still made it to the finals...
THE USA has nearly always been the favourites for the Olympics, though, and still might win -- they don't call them the "Dream Team" for nothing..
Australia, Lithuania, Croatia, Serbia, Spain, and co. -- they all seem to have some players who play in the NBA, or the Russian or Chinese leagues -- so they already have some knowledge of their competition when they get to the Olympics.
Australia has five team members who are also current NBA players..

Re: **MEDAL COUNT**
Granted ...and for that 'Original Dream Team': Michael Jordan & company ...the world fans loved watching those 'Air Above The Ground' players sail through the air - slam dunking their way to the Gold Medal win. Now that has become the 'Normal Way' that most of the world teams play [IMO] so I don't see the draw unless it's all about a named player or two!WhoseYourWolfie wrote:

Rather like waiting all year for the 'Super Bowl' just to find out that the Dallas Cowboys or the San Francisco 49ers will be playing - AGAIN!
Shoot, why bother ...just far too repeat/rehash from last time the games was played.
I like something new and challenging; except - EXCEPT that 4 X 1000 relay swim team gold medal --- winning that back was so righteous and felt sooooooo good! LOL

IN THE SAILING finals on Friday, Australia won Silver in two of those classes -- 3 out of the 4 sailors came from a couple of Lake Macquarie sailing clubs !
MEANWHILE, over at the women's Modern Pentathlon yesterday, the Aussie contender entered the run leg (4th stage) in 7th place, hit her stride and led into the pistol shoot -- taking Oz's first Gold medal in this event..

Re: **MEDAL COUNT**
LOOKING AT the Bing tables online, they also had their forward predictions for medal counts, where they missed with the basketball -- where they were tipping Spain for the Silver and Serbia for the Bronze...
They had also predicted, before the Games even started, that Britain was likely to be fourth in the medal count, after the USA, Russia and China; (obviously, that was before Russia lost most of their Athletics squad..).
I ALSO notice that they seem to be taking hours to update their results tables, wheras the TV stations seem to be a bit more up-to-date..

Ya, I just updated my topic 'basketball & volleyball' and saw what the ODDS MAKERS had Australia listed as well --- I don't like that!

Re: **MEDAL COUNT**
It went off far better than my expectations!
There were some outstanding moments of pure Olympic Spirit: there 'will you marry me?' proposal's - and all that makes watching such a joy - there were times my countryman/ woman behaved horrendously - there were accidents - there were questionable referees - there coach's getting NAKED (stripping) from frustration ...and a rain soaked closing ceremony!
What more could a two full weeks of unscripted TV viewing could ask for?

Re: **MEDAL COUNT**
I think I must have covered every sport over the last fortnight and now I'm knackered.
Highlights for me were the scenes of joy by the British womens' hockey team at the end when they won the penalty shoot out and the Gold Medal.
Andy Murray and Del Pottro's over the net embraces as Andy had just won the Gold Medal. Del Pottro was heartbroken after putting in so much to the match only to lose something he wanted more than any grand slam tournament.
Nicola Addam's winning her second gold medal and the first woman ever to do so. That girl has a million dollar smile doesn't she just.
Claressa Shields jumping out of the boxing ring and grabbing a stars and stripes flag and running round the boxing ring and up and down the walkways screaming with delight past John Inverdale doing an interview with Anthony Joshua who turned round smiling at it all - magic moment and what a star she is.
So many more to mention I could fill a page with them all.

I HAVE mentioned Britain previously over the past fortnight, nicko...
Please pay more attention..
IF you divide Britain's medal haul by your population, you will find yourself with a middle of the table ranking -- along with the likes of Italy, Spain -- and even Oz..
WITH the USA, Germany, Russia -- and especially China, below us..
And smaller (and relatively poorer) Pacific, Caribbean, Middle East/African, and Asian countries above us in those rankings.
