Violent ex-EDL leader Tommy Robinson banned by school after Mirror reveals plans for talk there on TOLERANCE
Nationwide tour: Robinson has undergone unlikely transformation
PA
Former Far Right leader Tommy Robinson’s cynical bid to re-invent himself as a teacher of “tolerance” is in tatters tonight thanks to the Mirror.
The violent former leader of the English Defence League was hoping to brush up his public image by giving talks in schools and universities.
But within hours of our story exposing his plans, the head teacher at the first school on his nationwide tour banned him.
Robinson, 30, who quit the EDL last October saying even he was no longer capable of controlling its most extreme members, had been due to speak at the Duchess Community High School in Alnwick, Northumberland, on Monday.
His visit there had been arranged by school head of religious education Louis Spence, who had claimed children would benefit from the experience.
“By inviting visitors as diverse as Tommy Robinson, students are given the opportunity to rise to the challenges they will face as adults,” said Mr Spence.
But furious head teacher Maurice Hall sent an urgent letter to parents of the 1,100 children today.
He wrote: “You may have seen in the press today, or it may appear tomorrow, coverage about a proposed visit to the school on Monday January 20 by an ex-member of the English Defence League, Tommy Robinson.
“He was going to speak to some students alongside a member of the Muslim community. After further discussion within school this visit has now been cancelled.
“At the same time we will also be carrying out a review of the policies and protocols that surround invites to outside speakers.”
It is believed the head and Duchess Community High School governors had no idea Robinson was due to talk to youngsters in the sixth form and those studying for GCSEs.
The parent of one child at the Alnwick school said: “Nobody could quite believe Tommy Robinson had been invited to talk to our kids, there were jokes that after him they would be getting Nigella Lawson in to liven up the cookery class.
“So thank heavens common sense has prevailed, albeit a little late in the day.”
Robinson says he has suffered death threats since quitting the EDL and agreed to do talks for the Quilliam Foundation, a counter terrorism think-tank.
Robinson is a former member of the BNP who founded the EDL in 2009 after Muslims staged a demo as UK troops returned from Afghanistan.
EDL rallies across the country have ended in punch-ups and numerous arrests, including that of Robinson himself
Critics say he has incited hatred against Muslims during the violent demos which cost taxpayers millions to police in towns and cities across the UK.
In September Robinson was arrested at an EDL demonstration in East London. In November, he admitted mortgage fraud and faces sentence later this year.
Last January he was jailed for 10 months for using someone else’s passport to travel to the USA. A week after his wedding in 2011 he was convicted of leading a brawl of Luton Town hooligans against supporters from Newport.
