its a good way to chill
mind you in the middle of winter at -5, snow and wind it can be a bit too chilling
Prefer trout fishing or sea fishing myself....at least you can eat "most" of what you catch

Re: Why do fishermen fish?
Some of my best memories are going fishing with my dad; if he had the time and all 6 of us were allowed to go along, he'd haul all of us down to the river bank - making several trips back & forth to the truck carrying the rods/tackle boxes/chairs/blankets/mosquito netting/bait bucket/sandwich & drink cooler and then get us all lined up to fish and sit and be quiet. Often we'd be out there all night ...those large flat head channel cat would be feeding later when the river was cooler. But there's a lot to be said for learning how to sit - look up at the stars - listen to nature and STFU and just enjoy being outdoors.
And I've got loads of hilarious stories to tell about: snakes dropping out of the trees into our camp grounds/raccoons coming in and raiding my dad's bait buckets/one of us kids getting to close to the river bank and OOOPs there was a huge splash - followed by dads cursing about scaring the fish away from his poles. But none of us drowned - none of us got snake bit - used to swim up the shallows and then come back to camp fire so dad could burn the leaches off of us ...but those were good times.
And the best eating fish ever!

Well, you did ask And my location for fishing has always meant driving to that favorite fishing spot, be it lake/river/pond or setting jug lines over night.

Re: Why do fishermen fish?
IF ONLY those pesky fish would learn to jump into the frying pan on demand, then people could give up fishing;
IF ONLY roses, orchids and African violets could grow like weeds, and hedges grew to order, then we wouldn't need gardeners;
IF Honeybees didn't sting, then a lot more people would have a beehive down the backyard;
IF the human body could take care of itself, then we wouldn't need doctors, nurses, physio's;
IF ONLY PEOPLE weren't so violent, greedy, envious, jealous, careless, vain, profligate, accident prone, then we wouldn't need policemen, armies, governments, ambulance services, customs, etc. ...

I've encountered the odd fish head so I guess some do it to eat what they catch but I used to know a guy who entered all these competitions
to catch the biggest fish in various places all over the country and just to get his photo in fishing magazines with the catch of the day kind of thing.
I thought he was loopy but he loved it
I suppose its like almost any hobby, some where someone is going to have a hobby each of us just wont "get"
I mean...I dont "get" train spotting"

etc...
but if it keeps folks happy/out of mischief and is harmless to others, well...whatever floats yer boat I say

I love Fishing, always have. Early morning, mist rising off the water, all quiet except for muted bird song, fish rising to the top with gentle splashing. Your Float suddenly gliding away under the water, STRIKE, feel the pull on the line, the Rod bends the line "sings". You see the Fish rising, put the net under him, he's yours! Carefully take out the hook, and return him to the water. You can't beat the thrill of the strike and that first feel of a fish "on"

Re: Why do fishermen fish?
Must be the hunting instinct Nicko, used to go fishing with my ex in Somerset. All that quiet contemplation, watching the flow of the water, etc, yep got that, wonderful place for meditation (in our case we could see Glastonbury Tor) but the rest I didn't get. Hauling in some poor fish by it's mouth, letting it gasp while you weigh it and photograph it before you put it back in, that just used to annoy me and quite spoiled the beauty around me.

on end in all weathers waiting for a fish to take the bait then putting it back in the water ??????????
Two lakes by me with little tents scattered every 30 yards or so and guys doing what exactly?
I walk my dogs past them every morning and just cant see the fascination with fishing at all
Explain please...
People have weird 'hobbies' I guess.
I just think its cruel.

Sass, I always use barbless hooks, do not take photo's. From when the fish is landed in about 10 seconds it's back in the water.

In the Maldives, you fish, literally, with a wire wound round a board, some hunk of fish and a course bent metal hook.
I went night fishing (loved it at night) and I caught the first fish and I also helped to haul in a baby shark.
My first catch. I was well chuffed.

I get the train spotting thing. It must be great to have such a huge interest in something - even if others think it's a bit weird.

Which is your fav eating fish?
Trout gutted/wrapped in foil with plenty of seasonings & butter; placed in an open fry pan/or cast iron dutch oven over the open fire wait 25 minutes - peel back the foil {leave the part over the head if your squeamish} lay off the skin and pick out they best tasting flaky fish you've ever eat'n.
Local fish:
Bass or crappie - scaly and lots of small bones so have to be careful while filleting them.
Catfish/channel cat/flat head catfish - their skin is similar to shark skin, has to be peeled off Cat fish will = pan size frying 7"-9", generally fried after just peeling skin off/beheading/gutting - bones are easily identified and the meat will just flake away from the bones. Channel Cat/Flat head 20# - 60# size; easiest way to skin these big ones is to nail them to a telephone/electrical post and peel the skin off with pliers - gut - remove the head - fillet these big ones into sections, because the meat is 1" thick to ½" thick in places and if not cooked properly can become tough. Because these type of fish are bottom feeders; we've been warned about not consuming as much of these as we once did when I was younger ...all those fertilizer/bio hazard run off that settles into those rivers/creeks/ponds/lakes where these big guys feed.

You are probably one of those people who likes spotting Eddie Stobard trucks, taking pictures of them and is always on the look out for another one he's added to his fleet lol.
Who ever that guy is this obsession with lots of women keeping scores on his trucks and where they have been spotted nationwide must be making him richer by the hour
Well now you mention it ...

Re: Why do fishermen fish?
THE CREEK at the bottom of this street has fish in it (it's a tidal creek, feeding into bigger creeks and eventually into the lake, and some lake/ocean saltwater spp. find their way up here..).
I'VE seen mullet, bream, whiting, taylor, eels, octopus, baby sharks, at times over the years..
I DON'T go fishing down there, though -- there's too much pollution from aan industrial estate and housing upstream.
My brother goes fishing fairly regularly, though, over on the opposite side of the lake, and sometimes off the coast; and occasionally I get some fish off him.
