Suicide Bombers kill 10 at Istanbul Airport
Suicide bombers have killed at least 10 and wounded 40 at Istanbul's Ataturk airport after blowing themselves up as police opened fire, according to Turkish officials.
It is understood that a 'terrorist' first opened fire with a Kalashnikov and became involved in a shoot-out with security personnel before blowing himself up.
One eyewitness reported seeing a police officer wrestle the attacker to the ground in the midst of the melee, before the explosion was detonated.
Twin blasts that struck at the International Arrivals Terminal at 7.50pm GMT - 9.50pm local time.
The first photographs to emerge from the airport show a scene of devastation, with debris and what appear to be ceiling tiles scattered over the taxi ranks outside the airport.

Hell, that will just about kill the tourism this summer. I know I'd be nervous about flying there. I've been to Istanbul a few times, and it's a beautiful city.

had it not required going through scanners at the airport entrance for people and luggage this could have been much worse. Been through attaturk a few times but mainly use sabiha gokcen which was hit by a mortar attack from the PKK earlier in the year. Despite that and living only 160 miles or so as the crow flies from Al Raqqa in syria I dont really worry about being killed by Daesh, its the PKK that is more likely to blow people up here. are people deserting brussels because of the attacks there, how about paris. there is no safe place throughout europe and much of the world as long as islamic fundamentalism is allowed to exist.

Turkish tourism is being hit by repeated attacks this year alone though Dean. I was in Turkey last month, right before the previous attack, and I was shocked at how few tourists there were. Great for having a convenient holiday but sad for the country. Sometimes we were among only a handful of people in a restaurant, a couple of times the only people, and our hotels were very quiet. People are turning away and some of the owners told us it was usually much busier at that time.

At least 36 dead, 147 injured in suspected ISIS attack at Istanbul airport
Published June 28, 2016
FoxNews.com
BREAKING: At least 36 people were killed and 147 more were injured when three suspected ISIS suicide bombers attacked Istanbul's main international airport Tuesday night, Turkish officials said.
Prime Minister Binali Yildirim confirmed the death toll from the blasts at Istanbul Ataturk Airport. Earlier, Justice Minister Bekir Bozdag confirmed that 147 people had been wounded in the attacks.
The Associated Press initially quoted a senior Turkish official as saying that close to 50 people had already died. However, the news agency later said that the official told them the figure was expected to rise to close to 50.
A Turkish official told Reuters that the "vast majority" of victims were Turkish, but some foreigners were also affected.
There was no immediate claim of responsibility, but the same senior Turkish official told AP that initial indications suggested ISIS were behind the attack. According to Reuters, a police source also told the Dogan News Agency, "ISIS is behind the attack."
That assessment was shared by Yildirim, who said the early investigative findings pointed to ISIS responsibility.
A U.S. government official told Fox News that the attack fits the profile of ISIS, which has stepped up its targeting of Turkey. The official said that ISIS tends to attack internationally known targets with an economic impact, such as an airport, while the Kurdish terror group PKK generally targets Turkish military and law enforcement.
The attack occurred one day before the two-year anniversary of ISIS declaring a caliphate across large swathes of Iraq and Syria, led by Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi.
Yildrim told reporters that the initial investigation indicated that all three attackers opened fire before blowing themselves up. He added that the terrorists took a taxi to the airport before launching their attack.
Another Turkish official told AP two of the attackers detonated explosives at the entrance of the international arrivals terminal after police fired at them, while a third blew himself up in the parking lot. Security video appeared to show one of the attackers running through the terminal with a weapon. In the footage, the attacker falls down, possibly after being shot, then detonated his suicide vest.
When asked whether a fourth attacker might have escaped, Yildirim said authorities have made no such assessment but are considering every possibility.
The U.S. official told Fox News that the apparent coordination among the suicide bombers also points to an ISIS operation, as does its resemblance to the March bombings in Brussels, which killed 32 people.
Turkish airports have security checks at the entrance of terminal buildings and then again before entry to departure gates.
Police sealed off the terminal and flights were prevented from taking off or landing. Some flights bound for the airport were diverted, while passengers on scheduled outbound flights were put up in nearby hotels.
Early Wednesday, Yildirim announced that air traffic to Ataturk Airport had resumed, but it was not clear whether planes were being allowed to take off.
The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) announced late Tuesday that all flights between Istanbul and the U.S. had been halted until further notice. The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey announced Tuesday that extra officers would be deployed to New York City's JFK and LaGuardia airports, as well as Newark Liberty International Airport.
A law enforcement source told Fox News that there were no immediate plans for additional security in so-called "sterile zones", or areas where passengers have already gone through checkpoints, at U.S. airports. The official said any decision to add security outside sterile zones would be made by state or local law enforcment.
Some passengers were kept in Ataturk Airport for over two hours after the explosions before the terminal was evacuated. Hundreds spilled out on to the sidewalk with suitcases in their hands or stacked on trollies.
Two South African tourists, Paul and Susie Roos from Cape Town, were at the airport and due to fly home at the time of the explosions.
"We came up from the arrivals to the departures, up the escalator when we heard these shots going off," Paul Roos told the Associated Press. "There was this guy going roaming around, he was dressed in black and he had a handgun."
Veysel Allay, who was waiting for a friend in the arrivals terminal, told the Daily Telegraph, "A man ran up and ripped open his jacket, showing a bomb vest. I ran before he did anything."
Jim Hyong Lee of South Korea told the Telegraph he and his family were checking in for a flight home when "we heard gunshots."
"I grabbed my family and ran," Lee said. "Someone waved us into the prayer room and hid us there until the police came."
Roads around the airport were sealed off for regular traffic after the attack and several ambulances could be seen driving back and forth.

A taxi driver dropped the men off at the airport?
I do hope he's being looked at by the police as he's either an assistant to them or dead.
Who picks up three men, dressed in black carrying guns/big bags/ other?

yes its down 47%, however it is no less safe than any other country in europe or indeed the world these days. Most terrorists attacks take place in the east by the PKK. I wouldn't go to istanbul unless I had to, but nit because of the attacks, just because its an awful place and likely to fall down at any moment when the earthquake hits.Eilzel wrote:Turkish tourism is being hit by repeated attacks this year alone though Dean. Deash as an entity is being rolled up now and whilst it wont stop terrorist attacks like last night it will make them harder to fund. guns and explosives are obviously not hard to obtain in turkey, but these attacks are not a daily occurrence.
I am off to blighty soon with the family and obviously I will take more care at the airports I am not overly concerned of being attacked.
That's more likely to happen when we visit london.
The terrorist want tourism to fail to push various countries over the edge.
I would hope that admiralGeneral President For Life Bir Dakika Bey will use this attack as a reason to launch extremely punitive attacks on daesh and not be so bothered by EU diktats on how they treat suspects arrested. You cant fight a war with people who have no rules with one arm tied behind your back.
IT's about time that the B52's returned to Incirlik and were on station over raqqa and other sites 24 hours a day to hit daesh every time they come up out of their holes.

Dean:
But there have been multiple attacks this year in Istanbul and Ankara, it is also geographically closer to danger zones. So I'd say it is more dangerous on balance.
Yes Thailand has attacks, but last year aside they are entirely concentrated in three tiny provinces in the south on the border with Malaysia. Bangkok is as safe as any other East Asian city (at least where terrorism is concerned).
Out of intetest why don't you like Istanbul? I found it one of the most beautiful and pleasant cities I've been to- the waiter's attitudes aside lol

Plausible ...golf bags '?' could hide those short muzzled military guns there's all sorts of video tape that is showing some images ...so once again, this is going to take some time to unwrap for details.

yes most by the pkk. however so far there have been none on the coastal regions which is where the bulk of holiday makers go.Eilzel wrote:Dean:

I am not keen on big city's full stop.
the turkish people on the whole are remarkably friendly and welcoming, which is why it is hard to see terrorists frighten away the main source of income for millions.

the short stock ak47 seen laying on the floor could quite easily be hidden under a coat or in a holdall.4EVER2 wrote:eddie wrote:A taxi driver dropped the men off at the airport?

the fact these people might have been wearing big coats should arouse suspicion, but then again I have seen turks wearing jumpers and coats in 30C heat. they consider it freezing if the temp is in the 20's, unlike me who is in a tshirt 10 months of the year here.
the temperatures in istanbul are somewhat lower than on the south coast, but this time of year probably reaching the 30's

Again, in Thailand the attacks are only in the extreme south, if Bangkok was suffering repeated bombings I'd expect a drop in tourism.
Incidentally, I'm not suggesting fleeing, I'm saying that terror attacks will naturally affect tourist numbers. We even considered scrapping our own plans but went ahead in the end. We were fortunate nothing happened.
