Brexit sets global economy reeling
Global capital markets reeled on Friday after Britain voted to leave the European Union, with $2 trillion in value wiped from equity bourses worldwide, while money poured into safe-haven gold and government bonds. Sterling suffered a record plunge.
The blow to investor confidence and the uncertainty the vote has sparked could keep the Federal Reserve from raising interest rates as planned this year, and even spark a new round of emergency policy easing from major central banks.
The traditional safe-harbor assets of top-rated government debt, the Japanese yen and gold all jumped. Spot gold rose more than 5 percent and the yield on the benchmark 10-year U.S. Treasury note fell to lows last seen in 2012 at 1.5445 percent.
Stocks tumbled in Europe. London's FTSE .FTSE dropped 2.4 percent while Frankfurt .GDAXI and Paris .FCHI each fell 6 percent to 8 percent. Italian FTMIB and Spanish .IBEX markets, and European bank stocks overall .SX7P, were headed for their sharpest one-day drops ever.
Worries that other EU states could hold their own referendums were compounded by the fact that markets had rallied on Thursday, seemingly convinced the UK would vote to stay in.
Britain's big banks took a $100 billion battering, with Lloyds (LLOY.L), Barclays (BARC.L) and RBS (RBS.L) plunging as much as 30 percent.
Stocks on Wall Street opened more than 2 percent lower but cut losses after about an hour of trading. The Dow Jones industrial average .DJI fell 340.24 points, or 1.89 percent, at 17,670.83, the S&P 500 .SPX lost 42.11 points, or 1.99 percent, at 2,071.21 and the Nasdaq Composite .IXIC dropped 116.74 points, or 2.38 percent, at 4,793.31.
MSCI's all-country world stock index .MIWD00000PUS fell 3.5 percent.
Having campaigned to keep the country in the EU, British Prime Minister David Cameron announced he would step down.

Do you think you can find a positive story now?
With all that negativity you're turning into a British male.

I'm supposed to go looking for positives when $2 trillion just evaporated from the world market?!

No, for people that don't have small businesses that are financed by those lending institutions that have invested heavily into the British Pound - or 401k retirements that are taking hits {yet again} ...certainly; those people can shrug their shoulders and maintain a 'give-a-shit' attitude because it didn't have a immediate impact upon your pocket book/monthly income from those investments - jobs!
Nooooo, problem!

Well the British people have voted to take back their country (to an extent anyway).
There will always be winners and losers and for once, whether any of you across the pond care or not, the British public feel like they've had their say and they have won a small victory.
See we've been seeing poorer people get poorer here for ages....so... Not sure what you expect us to do really?

Nearly half of the British people did the exact opposite.

I think you'll find we were making fun of the mindset of certain posters, not downplaying the economic importance of the UK on the world stage.

Re: Brexit sets global economy reeling
Well, this even caught the NYSE with their smudged and unclear ...so they were as shell shocked as many stock markets world wide - late last night into this early morning!
And there will be lots of European countries looking at England with that 'ole stink eye' - not quiet sure WTF you are going to pull next while trying to shore up & renegotiate those labor contracts and trade agreements.
And Jolly Ole' England needs to prove her ability to be Trusted --- the road that this BREXIT has tilled under may take a lot longer than even the 'PRO-EXIT' cheer leaders were prepared for!
And there will be lots of European countries looking at England with that 'ole stink eye' - not quiet sure WTF you are going to pull next while trying to shore up & renegotiate those labor contracts and trade agreements.
Certainly, it just looks like negative numbers on a post ...but when those negative numbers have hit every country WORLD WIDE that England will now be trying to renegotiate in a uncertain financial market base!Fitch Ratings declared the outcome "credit negative for most sectors in the U.K.," while S&P reiterated that it may lower U.K.'s primary rating by more than one notch because the vote will "deter investment in the economy," damage the sterling and undermine the financial sector.
Kyodo News reported that one Japanese cabinet official said that a free trade agreement between Japan and the EU — under negotiation since 2013 — would be difficult to reach this year as a result of the Brexit vote. The EU is one of Japan’s largest trading partners.
In Scotland, where "remain" won in every local polling authority, the Scottish National Party may well follow through on its threat to demand a new independence referendum so that Scotland can remain in the EU after the United Kingdom voted to leave. But there is broad speculation that other nations in the bloc, emboldened by the U.K's decision, will move to leave.

The pound is less valuable than it has been in 31 years ... British banks lost $100 billion ... the UK is poised for breakup ... the rest of the EU will lose one-sixth of its economic product ... the far-right across the world thinks it's winning now ... so sure, no big deal.

Thanks, Sassy -- I was wondering the same thing. Are we now going to see mass deportations or something? Will people have to stop saying that flying the St. George flag is racist? Is tea going to taste better? Will England win the World Cup?

AND of course....
the lefty berks have only themselves to blame for this shit storm.....
IF the EU had been what it started (and what we were sold) a "trading partnership" a "common market"
I doubt for one instance that there would have been this happening
BUT
the lefty wankers just HAD to go down the lie of "ever closer union"
of a faceless grey and dismal lefty controlled, non democratic (in fact post democratic) bloc in which "the people" have no say in what happens, even within their own locality
where a foreign criminal cant be deported and has to be released back onto our streets...
where a known terrorist take years to deport
where some bureaucrat can come up with a ridiculous regulation that does NOTHING to improve anything...yet ends up costing the individual hundreds if not thousands....
IF the left hadnt gone down THAT line.....
we would still be loving "le frog"

When those people do a goodly amount of trade/purchase ON LINE and those small businesses will be doing the very same thing!
People just do not spend what little monthly funds that they have right around their own neighborhoods - not since the age of internet/Ebay/Amazon has given us the world at our finger tips!
And I did give you more credit then that

How's that

Tomorrow, he'll probably wake up another few hundred million poorer..

You must not be following this election very closely. It's not nearly like the Brexit vote, with each side surging forward and falling behind as time goes on. Hillary Clinton has consistently held a formidable lead in the polls, and Brexit won't make a difference because we simply don't have enough people in this country who think like Trump for him to win.
Clinton is poised to win states that haven't gone to the Democrat in decades. Trump is polling worse than any candidate in the prior three presidential elections. His campaign budget is less than Ben Carson's, who dropped out three months ago.

The EU was created by the Maastricht Treaty, which entered into force on November 1, 1993. The treaty was designed to enhance European political and economic integration by creating a single currency (the euro), a unified foreign and security policy, and common citizenship rights and by advancing cooperation in the areas of immigration, asylum, and judicial affairs. The EU was awarded the Nobel Prize for Peace in 2012, in recognition of the organization’s efforts to promote peace and democracy in Europe.

Remember the recession of '08? Didn't you think that could happen in reverse?
I didn't think about it at all Ben. I'm sure such a mighty nation like the US isn't threatened by a little tiny country like the UK.
It isn't threatening. It's like owning a fish tank...its mesmerizing to watch 'em all swimming in circles.

What's the big deal?
The pound is less valuable than it has been in 31 years ... British banks lost $100 billion ... the UK is poised for breakup ... the rest of the EU will lose one-sixth of its economic product ... the far-right across the world thinks it's winning now ... so sure, no big deal.
WITH the Pound sterling crashing back down to around it's long term average...
I.E. parity with the $US by some time next week..
AT LEAST we can look at the "positives".
Britain will be much cheaper for us smelly foreigners to visit..
And any remaining British farmers and factories still exporting their products, should find that they're getting a fair bit more next year, when expressed in British £££...

I'm supposed to go looking for positives when $2 trillion just evaporated from the world market?!
Ah so someone pressed a button and some digits disappeared.
I wouldn't worry. We won't notice it, I bet.
The British £ has crashef through the floor...
And eddie claims now that she won't even notice it..
So, you won't be buying any more imported goods then, eddie?
Nor going abroad any time soon..
Or driving when petrol doubles in price ???
wolfie...sometimes I think you are actually quite bright....then you post crap like this....
it hasnt "crashed"...at all....sure its dropped a bit but by no means is it serious...
predicted possibly 1.5 p on a litre...
1.38 against the dollar
as opposed to 1.4362
it was arguably too strong anyway

And you'll be swarmed at the docks - airports - train stations by mass amounts of humanity; begging for some salvation and whatever few = 1p, 2p, 5p, 10p, 20p, 50p, £1, £2 you'd have to toss their way!WhoseYourWolfie wrote:Ben Reilly wrote:

Re: Brexit sets global economy reeling
£ has dropped over 5 cents this week...
IF it drops another 30 cents (say, 5 cents per trading day..), over the next week or two..
Then that would have been more than 20% for the fortnight, wouldn't it ?
AND, no doubt your central bank has been selling $US and ¥Yen this week, and buying up £££..
How long they keep doing that for ???
