Calderdale gang jailed for grooming and abusing girls
Fifteen men who "systematically" groomed and sexually abused teenage girls in Halifax have been jailed.
They were convicted of child sex offences including rape, grooming and trafficking during three separate trials at Leeds Crown Court.
Prosecutors praised the "immense courage and bravery" of the two victims who gave evidence against the men.
The longest sentence passed was 25 years in what was described as a "complex and lengthy operation".
The gang of men abused a young girl in Halifax and Bradford between 2009 and 2011, the Crown Prosecution (CPS) said.
Another victim was also sexually assaulted by one of the gang members.
'Largest' investigation
Peter Mann, head of the complex casework unit at the Crown Prosecution Service for Yorkshire and Humberside, said: "These men are responsible for a range of crimes involving child sexual exploitation and abuse.
"One victim was sexually assaulted in a car.
"The second victim was groomed, and systematically exploited by the older men she associated with. Some of her abusers acted together as a group, grooming her and plying her with drink and drugs. Others took advantage of her individually."
West Yorkshire Police said the abuse was first reported to its officers in 2012 by the victim, who was then aged 15 and living in Halifax at the time. A second girl who came forward gave evidence against another gang member.
Background: The victim
The main victim in the case was 13 years old when she was first abused.
The girl was said to have come from a chaotic family background who had become addicted to drugs and alcohol during the period of the attacks, which stopped in 2011.
She was eventually taken into social care.
Now 21, she is living a new life with a baby, miles away from Calderdale.
The force said the case was "the largest and longest running investigation into child sexual exploitation in Calderdale".
"It led to a major investigation with police conducting nearly 60 hours of interviews with two victims. Detectives also processed 1,848 statements, 2,963 exhibits and more than 20,000 items of disclosure," police said.
In total 25 men were charged. During the trials four defendants were cleared by a jury while three others were acquitted on the orders of the judge.
Mr Mann described it as a "complex and lengthy operation" and said the girls had shown "immense courage and bravery in reporting these matters to the police and in providing evidence".
The defendants
Hedar Ali, 36, of Bradford, was jailed for 25 years after being found guilty of two counts of rape and two counts of trafficking for sexual exploitation.
Haider Ali, 41, of Halifax, sentenced to 20 years in prison after he was found guilty of sexual activity with a child and causing a person to engage in sexual activity.
Khalid Zaman, 38, of Bradford, jailed for 17-and-a-half years after being convicted of two counts of rape and supplying class B drugs. He denied all the charges.
Mohammed Ramzan, 35, of Bradford, jailed for 15 years after being found guilty of rape.
Haaris Ahmed, 32, of Halifax, sentenced to 12-and-a-half years in prison after he was found guilty of two counts of sexual activity with a child and with the supply of class B drugs.
Tahir Mahmood, 43, of Halifax, jailed for 11 years after being found guilty of two counts of sexual activity with a child and sexual assault.

Azeem Subhani, 25, of Halifax, jailed for nine years after being found guilty of two counts of sexual activity with a child.
Talib Saddiq, 31, of Halifax, jailed for eight years after he was found guilty of two counts of sexual activity with a child.
Sikander Malik, 31, of Halifax, jailed for seven years after being found guilty of sexual activity with a child.
Mohammed Ali Ahmed, 43, of Halifax, jailed for six-and-a-half years after being found guilty of one count of sexual activity with a child.
Aftab Hussain, 37, of Halifax, jailed for six years after pleading guilty to two charges of sexual activity with a child last September.
Mansoor Akhtar, 25, of Huddersfield, was found guilty of one count of sexual activity with a child but admitted to supplying Class B drugs. He was jailed for six years.
Sikander Ishaq, 31, of Halifax, sentenced to six years in prison after being found guilty of one count of sexual activity with a child.
Fasil Mahmood, 37, of Halifax, was jailed for 10 months after he was found guilty of supplying class B drugs.
Farquaan Gafar, 31, of Derby, admitted to one count of sexual touching and is due to be sentenced at a later date.
Sentencing for another member of the gang, who cannot be named for legal reasons, has been adjourned until next week.

I know what sexual assault is, but what the fuck is 'grooming'? What acts constitute grooming? I know personal grooming, like combing hair and putting on skin lotion. Surely those are not crimes.

Child grooming is befriending and establishing an emotional connection with a child, and sometimes the family, to lower the child's inhibitions for child sexual abuse.[1] It lures minors into trafficking of children, illicit businesses such as child prostitution, or the production of child pornography.[2][3][4]
This crime has been proscribed in various ways since the International Convention for the Suppression of the Traffic in Women and Children, which was agreed in 1921 as a multilateral treaty of the League of Nations that addressed the problem of international trafficking of women and children for nefarious purposes. The proscribed traffic was international in nature at that time. The concept of localised grooming, in which gangs of reprobates groom neighbourhood victims, was devised in 2010 by the UK Child Exploitation and Online Protection Centre.[5]
And YES...you have a similar law over there ....
Criminal offenses
General
In its report Protection of Children Against Abuse Through New Technologies, the Council of Europe Cybercrime Convention Committee addressed the emerging issues of violence against children through the use of new technologies (the issue of child pornography on the Internet is already covered by Article 9 Convention) with particular reference to grooming both through the internet and by mobile telephones.[24]
Some nations have already criminalized grooming in their national legislation. Analysis of these laws suggests some may be redundant with existing legislation and/or practices.[25]
Australia
Australian Criminal Code Act 1995 section 474.26 and 474.27 prohibits the use of a "carrier service" to communicate with the intent to procure a person under the age of 16, or expose such a person to any indecent matter for the purposes of grooming.
The various states and territories have similar laws, some of which use a different age (for example the victim only has to be under 18 in Queensland).
Canada
In Canada, Criminal Code section 172.1 makes it an offence to communicate with a child through a computer system for the purpose of committing a sexual offence (termed "luring a child").
Costa Rica
In Costa Rica, since April 2013, the Criminal Code section 167 bis, makes it an offence to seduce a child by electronic means. With penalties from one to 3 years of imprisonment for a person that, by any means attempt to establish an erotic or sexual communication with a child under 15 years old.
Netherlands
At 1 January 2010 section 248e was added to the Dutch Criminal Code making (online) grooming of a child under 16 years old illegal. The maximum punishment is 2 years of imprisonment or a fine of the fourth category.[26]
United Kingdom
In England and Wales, sections 14 and 15 of the Sexual Offences Act 2003 make it an offense to arrange a meeting with a child under 16, for oneself or someone else, with the intent of sexually abusing the child. The meeting itself is also criminalized. The offence carries a maximum sentence of 10 years imprisonment, and automatic barring of the offender working with children or vulnerable adults. [27]
The Protection of Children and Prevention of Sexual Offences (Scotland) Act 2005 introduced a similar provision for Scotland.[28]
Thus, a crime may be committed even without the actual meeting taking place and without the child being involved in the meeting (for example, if a police officer has taken over the contact and pretends to be that child). In R v T (2005) EWCA Crim 2681, the appellant, aged 43, had pretended to befriend a nine-year-old girl, but had done very little with her before she became suspicious and reported his approaches. He had a number of previous convictions (including one for rape) and was described as a "relentless, predatory paedophile". The Court of Appeal upheld a longer than commensurate sentence of eight years' imprisonment with an extended license period of two years.
United States
In the United States, 18 U.S.C. § 2422 makes it a federal offense to use the mail, interstate commerce, etc. to entice a minor to sexual activity for which any person can be charged with a criminal offense. 18 U.S.C. § 2425 makes it a federal offense to transmit information about a person below the age of 16 for this purpose. Some states have additional statutes covering seducing a child online, such as the Florida law that makes "Use of a Computer to Seduce a Child" a felony.[29]
Laws focused on 'grooming' were first enforced federally against Alabaman Jerry Alan Penton in 2009. Penton received 20 years in prison for that action coupled with another 20 for his distribution and possession of child pornography. He was sentenced to 40 years in federal prison on a variety of charges relating to child pornography.[

It's similar to how pimps control prostitutes...they flatter them, lead them on, buy them things, work on them psychologically. Establishing a trusting relationship, spending time with them and listening to them. They may treat the child as special, giving them presents and compliments. Offenders use gifts and trickery to manipulate and silence the child into keeping the sexual assault a secret. They gradually desensitise the child and violate boundaries.

Well, that's good to know. We don't want any unlawful befriending or excessive emotional connecting, until the child is at least 21.

Ok, this at least connects the traditional mail and wire fraud offenses to 'sexual activity'.

An Alabaman...why am I not surprised.

Re: Calderdale gang jailed for grooming and abusing girls
The grooming process for child sexual exploitation
Examples of points of contact include:
The befriending stage involves the perpetrators using coercive and non-coercive seductive and deceptive behaviour.
Example: Jenny’s classmate Moz introduced her to his older brother, Bono. Jenny was flattered to have the friendship of an older boy, and agreed to miss classes to hang out with him and his friends at a games arcade, where she was given cigarettes and vodka for free. They encouraged Jenny to text her mum to say she was at a friend’s house and would be home later, but not to tell her about the arcade. The following week, Bono asked her to come to a party in a nearby town. Jenny knew her mum wouldn’t be happy so said no. But Bono said he would make an anonymous call to her school informing them about her drinking and smoking at the arcade during school hours last week.
Example: Over the next couple of months, Jenny became desperate for the cigarettes that Bono gave her. Cigarettes she borrowed from other friends were not as good as the ones rolled by Bono. She started to sweat and feel sick if she couldn’t smoke one. Jenny and Bono started to meet to smoke together during school hours. She was so grateful for them, she gave him oral sex in his car.
Example: a few months later, Bono took Jenny to a party. She got drunk and followed Bono into the bathroom, where he pinned her against the wall and forced her to have sex with her. All his friends were watching, some even videoed it on their mobiles. But Jenny hadn’t had sex before and was devastated he had taken her virginity in such a violent, public way. Nonetheless, she didn’t think he had raped her, as he wasn’t a stranger wearing a balaclava. She went home, avoiding her mum and showered. Next time she went to the arcade, she saw some of Bono’s friends who have filmed him having sex with her. A tall guy who was much older than Bono approached her with a cigarette. Jenny refused and asked him where Bono was. The tall guy asked if she would like to come and spend some time with him in his flat. Jenny refused again, but to her shock, he started to show her the film of Bono raping her. The tall guy told her that if she would not do what he wanted, he would up the film up on YouTube and Facebook. She ran home and locked herself in her bedroom. Her phone kept ringing. Most of the text messages she received that night were from the tall guy from the arcade.
Control and alienation is exercised in the following ways:
Although some children are able to free themselves from their perpetrators, the whole experience, particularly when it is sustained over a long time during a period of significant personal development, can profoundly change the child’s personality and affect their life prospects and chances. This includes the child experiencing significant psychological effects and extends to the child facing adverse social and economic consequences.

Grooming may be a phased, gradual process used by perpetrators to sexually exploit children. It can take place over varying periods of time either online or offline – from a few days to several years.
Grooming for sexual exploitation can also take different forms, and be more or less violent. Although we talk about it as having stages, this doesn’t necessarily mean that it will always develop in the same way. The picture we present is to give you an indication of what could happen.Initial contact
Contact may be direct or through a child’s school mates, friends, siblings or neighbours. Many children disclose that the initial contact was made by someone they regarded as an equal.Examples of points of contact include:
- home
- school
- shopping malls
- entertainment arcades
- leisure clubs
- taxi ranks
- bus and train stations.
Befriending
After initial contact has been made, the child is then introduced to one or more older men who pose as, or are, the initial contact’s older brother or cousin.
Exchange of favours
Following the befriending stage, the child typically feels infatuated with the older man, interprets his attention and behaviour as love and regards him as a ‘boyfriend’. The child’s infatuation can override and weaken the child’s ability to see through and resist the coercion and deception. At this point, the man then seeks sexual favours for himself and for others. The child is expected to perform sexual acts as either proof of the child’s love for this person or as a way of paying for the ‘kindness’ shown during the befriending stage. The child is normally unaware that money is exchanging hands. Although legally significant, the awareness of the exchange of money is a minor consideration. More serious for the child is the demand for sexual activity and the actual experience of it, which can be profoundly shocking and shaming. The perpetrators use the shame against the child as it makes it more difficult for the child to seek help.Example: Over the next couple of months, Jenny became desperate for the cigarettes that Bono gave her. Cigarettes she borrowed from other friends were not as good as the ones rolled by Bono. She started to sweat and feel sick if she couldn’t smoke one. Jenny and Bono started to meet to smoke together during school hours. She was so grateful for them, she gave him oral sex in his car.
Control
When the child expresses unwillingness to return sexual favours, the perpetrators start making threats. The perpetrators gain control over the child in the following ways:- encouraging the child to truant from school and fear reprisals from parents and school authorities
- showing the child weapons in the car or on the person and keeping the child under constant threat
- encouraging addiction to cigarettes, alcohol and drugs and making the child dependent on him to supply these
- photographing the child performing sexual activities and threatening to publicise the images
- involving the child in criminal activities and threatening the child with police action
- using physical violence and threats against the child and the child’s family.
Exploitation
In the later stages, the perpetrators build upon the alienation which may have begun in earlier stages through the child’s truanting, deception and concealment. The perpetrators continue to seek to sever the child’s links with family, friends and other support systems. Distance means the perpetrators’ activities go unhindered. The child is led further into a life of violence, exploitation and crime. The sexually exploitation process results in the child earning money to support the child’s ‘needs’ and those of the perpetrators.Control and alienation is exercised in the following ways:
- encouraging over 16s to seek their own accommodation in order to exploit the distance from support networks and create a widened, irreversible gap
- proactively seeking accommodation for the child
- encouraging the child to make abuse claims against family members
- encouraging teenage pregnancy and then exercising further control via a baby or arranging a termination
- creating conflicting feelings of love and hate, protection and exploitation, guilt and innocence, entitlements and duties.

What 'wikipedia' defines as sexual grooming of children:Original Quill wrote:I know what sexual assault is, but what the fuck is 'grooming'? What acts constitute grooming? I know personal grooming, like combing hair and putting on skin lotion. Surely those are not crimes.
characteristics to be aware of >
To establish a good relationship with a child and the child's family, child groomers might do several things: They might try to gain the child's or parents' trust by befriending them, with the goal of easy access to the child. A trusting relationship with the family means the child's parents are less likely to believe potential accusations. Child groomers might look for opportunities to have time alone with the child, which can be done by offering to babysit; the groomers may also invite the child for sleepovers, for opportunistic bed sharing. They might give gifts or money to the child in exchange for sexual contact, or for no apparent reason. Commonly, they show pornography (videos or pictures) to the child, or talk about sexual topics with the child, hoping to make it easy for the child to accept such acts, thus normalizing the behavior. Hugging and kissing or other physical contact, even when the child does not want it, can happen.
Actions such as online communication have been defended by suspected offenders using the so-called "fantasy defense", in which those accused argue that they were only expressing fantasies and not plans of future behavior. In the U.S., case law draws a distinction between those two and some people accused of "grooming" have successfully used this defense.

Sikander Ishaq, 31, of Halifax, sentenced to six years in prison after being found guilty of one count of sexual activity with a child.
Fasil Mahmood, 37, of Halifax, was jailed for 10 months after he was found guilty of supplying class B drugs.

characteristics to be aware of >To establish a good relationship with a child and the child's family, child groomers might do several things: They might try to gain the child's or parents' trust by befriending them, with the goal of easy access to the child.

This is what {Subway Sandwich} Jerod Fogle was charged with, along with many counts of 'child porn' and internet child porn!
I get it. But in its generic form, I see that grooming is what everyone does with dating...only with under-aged children it's illegal. It's just building trust and getting into each other's confidence.
That is, except the sharing porn part.

Quill, I cannot believe that you didn't know what grooming meant unless you're trying to say that the use of the word is, well, useless?
As to the OP, it seems that most Pakistani men work in gangs. We seem to always hear gangs of them doing this.

Re: Calderdale gang jailed for grooming and abusing girls
Exactly ...what my oldest brother warned me about prior to my freshman year of high school. The seniors boys not already attached/going steady - treated the incoming freshman group of girls like 'NEW MEAT' {aka virgins} and the number of 'players' were large and predator's galore.Quill stated > I get it. It's like a right of passage the way my gender is treated in our country and once I was clued into the 'GAME' ...WOW, was it ever obvious what was going on! UGH

As to the OP, it seems that most Pakistani men work in gangs. We seem to always hear gangs of them doing this.
NOT ONLY those dastardly Paki's...
Other ethnic groups with minorities of crim's,, of both genders, that might prowl in gangs can also include :
Irish, English, Romney, Nigerians, Italians, Russians, Greeks, Lebanese, Chinese, Brazilians, French, Libyans, Ugandans, Japanese, Indians, Turks, Germans, Tongans, etc. ...
Curse those ethnic foreigner "gangs" !!!
P.S. Where's your evidence to back the statement that :
"..most Pakistani men work in gangs." ???
THAT'S a rather bold, bigotted and baseless statement !
ARE "most" Paki's criminals?
Are "most" Paki' men paedo's ?
Are only men paedo's ?
Where's the evidence ?

you will agree "context" is everything.....
Child grooming is befriending and establishing an emotional connection with a child, and sometimes the family, to lower the child's inhibitions for child sexual abuse
Down here, for the last few decades, when paedophiles, child-victim rapists, and their facilitators, have been charged with such crimes, it's usually been for something like "procuring a minor for the purpose of underage sex/paedophile activities/sexual assault.."
It's only been in more recent years that the term 'grooming' has been added into the description of those crimes..

Didn't say any of that - perhaps that's what you're secretly thinking? Who knows?
I was referring to the cases over here. There are a lot of cases of Pakistani grooming gangs. Can you deny that?
