Scorched Earth policy, you mean?
Yes, exactly. In many ways the American Civil War was the first modern war. It was the first time that the rifled bore was used extensively; a marksman can use a high-powered rifle to hit the mark from many hundreds of yards away, whereas smooth-bore weapons are far less accurate. Pickett's charge at Gettysburg taught modern Europeans, don't do that when facing rifled bores. That led to defensive war tactics rather than Napoleonic charges, like you saw in the trench-war of WWI. Also, iron-sided ships, etc. Bruce Catton, The Civil War.
Sherman's theory was you destroy the enemy's ability to make war, not just the army in the field. That means attack his economic base. Hence all the burning of farms in Georgia...and the bombing of Dresden. It's the ultimate in scorched earth. 9/11 and 7/7 were just advancements on Sherman's theory., coupled with asymmetrical war tactics.
The majority of soldiers shot during that war died from infection or disease. Amputations were the only way to actually save lives.
Iron sided ships? You mean the monitors? Didn't they turn out to be unstable and not really any good in rough seas? I think they used them briefly and then fucked off the design. Imagine going down in one of those!

nearly 600 new homes....and NO extra doctors, school places, no improvement of road access in fact fuck all...just here ya go 1800 (on avarage) new folks but not a jot of infrastructure...
yeah...great innit....
it already takes up to 3 weeks for a consult with a dr....and 48hrs FFS for a repeat prescrition....
nah..forget the tax breaks etc designed to kill and destroy the rural parts of england....
ALL new housing (in the main)...should be forced to be done on brownfield land within existing cities...
they stink anyway...so a bit more of a pong wont hurt.....
how crowded a city is doesnt matter.....lets face it you cant ruin a toilet by crapping in it....
LOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOL
they build them by the thousands when the expand suburbs down here
I am not saying we are better i am just giving you a comparison to what 'Normal' is...
If British stopped 'pining for yesterday' and started to 'build for tomorrow' than you'd build the hospital, roads and schools too.
typical brain dead aussie ....i presume its being upside down all your life??? ....who...said anything about suburbs......I'm talking about a small village, one which it has to be said will lose its identity as a small village...lose that particular quality that small villages have...once its "expanded"
and...once again its NOT like YOU have any shortage of potential building land that has NO other real value is it......

Re: Where Are We Going To Put them All?
towns become suburbs when the city meets them.
the land in England has no real value currently since it is left unproductive in the hands of the English farmer
So where is your campaign to rebuild brown field areas so the leave the small villages? it's not like the UK doesn't have several half dead industrial cities

He never said a town, he said a village, of which there is countlss in the UK
City – a city would have abundant services, but not as many as a large city. The population of a city is over 100,000 people up to 300,000.
Large town – a large town has a population of 20,000 to 100,000.
Town – a town has a population of 1,000 to 20,000.
Village – a village is a human settlement or community that is larger than a hamlet but, smaller than a town. A village generally does not have many services, most likely a church or only a small shop or post office. The population of a village varies however, the average population can range from hundreds to thousands.
Hamlet – a hamlet has a tiny population (<100) and very few (if any) services, and few buildings.
Isolated dwelling – an isolated dwelling would only have 1 or 2 buildings or families in it. It would have negligible services, if any.

And your point semantics boy
Still applies, actually more so as a villiage is consumed without any fanfare.
and I say i bought int the town of Tarago even though the population is about 300, pull the stick out of your ass and speak aussie
