Kelvin Mackenzie is a man of bullish self-confidence; the former editor of the Sun who, in 1989, laid out a front page splash telling us "The Truth" behind Hillsborough. It claimed some fans picked pockets of victims, urinated on police officers and beat up one officer as he gave the kiss of life. Almost every word has turned out to be untrue. There was, at the end of his brief interview with BBC TV today, a slight tremor in his voice as he admitted that "there has been collateral damage".

The infamous front page which blamed the fans for the Hillsborough tragedy was not just an insult to the victims and a stupefying journalistic failure, it has become the public symbol of the lies at the heart of the cover-up.

If you want to understand its power and significance have look at the front page of the Metro. The layout is a copy of the Sun from 1989.

So when today's Sun and the Times front pages were released on the day after the verdict with no mention of Hillsborough on the front page and a single word tweet "unbelievable" appeared from Tony Barrett, the Times Liverpool football writer, most drew the same conclusion. It appeared that the topic of Hillsborough had become so toxic for Rupert Murdoch's newspapers that they were incapable of covering what was without any doubt the biggest story of the day on a front page.




Disgusting, and the people behind it will crawl under their rocks and behind their powerful friends and hide.....

WHENEVER there are tragic disasters like this, there are often several groups along the chain of events that can share in the blame; to wit :

Organisers
Did they allow for expected crowds, did they have enough gates open, and enough people on those gates ?

Police
IN THIS CASE, the police were proven to be unprepared and largely incompetent -- as those responsible have finally admitted in recent weeks..

Security, other crowd control
DID the organisers have enough extra security and "marshals" for the day, and were they properly briefed ?

Media reporting
IT MAY be fairly argued that the majority of average journalists are decent folk and just doing their jobs.
HOWEVER, the media does have a large minority of lying scumbags, either chasing that big story, or twisting, distorting, misdirecting and fabricating events to suit corporate or personal agendas..

Police associations/federations
POLICE ASSOCIATIONS/FEDERATIONS/UNIONS also have their scumbag-filled propaganda units, all too ready to jump to the defence of even the worst offenders among the corrupt, criminal or just plain incompetent elements among their membership..

AS SEEN in this case, strongly attempting to lay all the blame back onto the fans themselves...

Other groups trying to block or misdirect investigations and reports
NOTICE as well, how many times other groups - and often unrelated entities - take an interest in matters afterwards..
HOW MANY times is it seen where the likes of politicians, local councillors, chambers of commerce, business 'leaders', or certain community groupe, will try and block evidence, threaten witnesses, and generally attempt to "pervert the course of justice" ?


ONE OF the main reasons that I regularly show so much distrust of police, media groups, politicians, business groups and certain special interest groups..

So when will the next round of claims for "compensation" start?

I thought the police always admitted that they weren't properly prepared for Hillsborough. As for them blaming "the fans", did they actually blame the fans who died, or did they merely say that fans pushing through the tunnel caused a crush? If it's the latter, that's not actually a lie. I think there's been as much spin on the other side really.

Now South Yorkshire police in general have been berated and criticised because some of them dared to praise some of their retired colleagues.

Ugh - I hate that business of praising whole cities as if all the people there are as one. It wasn't Liverpool, it was some people from Liverpool.

I have a granddaughter who lives in Liverpool, she, and her neighbours read the Sun. Only the "old uns" don't buy it, the young uns don't give a toss.

Well less than 2 years ago the Sun was still being boycotted in Liverpool.

Liverpudlians are, on the whole, very friendly people, but boy, do some of them have a 'Us Scousers against the whole World' kind of mentality.

Question...has anyone ever met a Liverpudlian who didn't either go to school with John Lennon or had a best mate who did?
